First Look, ThunderCats Reboot

If a gun and a whip is good enough for Indy it's good enough for Tygra.

Lion-O...I like the new look. In fact I think it's an improvement.

Panthro...meh.

Cheetara...Love the new look. I won't say it's an improvement over the original like I did for Lion-O, but I love it. Could use a few more spots though. She's a cheetah girl after all!

Tygra...he has a pistol and a whip! And his look is an improvement!

Now, if they keep Cheetara the badass of the team I remember her to be (<_< No need to correct me if I'm wrong >_>) all will be well!

Just hope they still have Kitt and Katt.

Don't have a problem with the new looks, interested on seeing on this series goes. I agree with Tymers Realm post on Jelenic wanting to simplify the Thundercats mythos.

It's a very simple one to begin with, and there really isn't much that needs to be done on it. Only thing I can think of is that Jelenic was maybe watching only the last season or so, that's were I thought the series got convoluted.

Interview with producer Ethan Spaulding.

Some interesting stuff in there. Like,

Quote:
MTV: Lots of people are asking about Tygra...
SPAULDING: [Laughs] Everyone wants to know about Tygra, but that's sort of story-specific. I can't reveal too much. Basically, we wanted to make him cooler than he was. The consensus was that he was the boring guy of the old show, so we wanted to make him more interesting and gave him another dimension. But don't worry — he still has the whip. People were wondering where the whip was at one point, but it's on his belt.
Quote:
MTV: And Panthro's looking a little more grizzled with that scar on his eye and such...
SPAULDING: Yeah, we're making him the older veteran. He's been out there on Third Earth exploring. He's the elder of the group, once they get together.
And for the people "bothered" by the anime inspiration. (although someone already said the animation studio is Japanese.)
Quote:
MTV: Everyone's asking about the anime vibe in the image. Will the series have an anime feel to it? Does the anime vibe extend beyond the character designs?
SPAULDING: [It will extend to] the visual storytelling as well. The original show was done in Japan, and many people probably don't know that. A lot of the artists went on to be in Studio Ghibli, and worked on [Hayao] Miyazaki's first film. So "ThunderCats" does have a footprint in Japanese animation. We're kind of going back and honoring that in the new series. I was always a huge fan of the original show and I love the Japanese animation and what they can do, so we're really going back to the roots.
Theres other good stuff in there too.

Is Miyazaki's first film being mentioned here Princess Mononoke or Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind?

Sorta related, the Lightship battle at the end of the new Tron reminded me of the Valley of he Wind.

I really miss older style animation and seems any time I see a new remake of those old 80s cartoons there redone in some anime-ish fashion and I just don't like it as much.

I prefer the older style animation, though Lion-O did look like a clown.
no, not at all. a while a go i watched a few of the older cartoons that i absolutely loved as a kid(he man, gi joe, galaxy rangers, silverhawks, thundercats, and godzilla), the art, animation and stories were painfully bad. nostalgia had me thinking they were a lot better than they were, watching a "fight" scene in g.i. joe where nobody actually hit each other(the dreadnaughts fight over breath mints and candy mints) drove home how bad the old cartoons really were, they were so much worse than we remember.

Pretty sure Mononoke came out decades after Miyazaki began making movies. Just sayin'...

Did the artists working on Thundercats work on Monokee or Four Winds?

I think the point being that Mononoke was his first 'big' film here in the US. Of course it still wasn't his first film released in the US, but it's likely that it's the first one many people had heard of.

:::Looks at my Two-disc eidtion of Nausicaä:::

Box shows the film's original release as 1984. So I would guess the producer ment Nausicaä. I'll have to look at my copy of the 1st season to look at who did the animation. I know it was a asian company, just don't recall who at the moment.

Thank you for the time...

It's bugged me for a while, but as I tend not to care for the...sensibilities(?) of anime or the emotionless ravages of time itself, I just kinda chalked it up to my natural curmudgeoninity.

Six feet under, if we're lucky. Or taxidermied and sitting on Lion-O's coffee table.

Well, not worse than I remember. I was already in college at the time. But I can relate when I look back at Speed Racer cartoons.

GI Joe's premium rates were sky high though w/ losing all those vehicles...

Best thing about most of those old cartoons...the openings were awesome...but then we get to the actual show...

Orco was in the rebooted Masters of the Universe series, y'know.

You know who always reminded me of Snarf? Neelix.

Anyway, I was never a big fan of the original ThunderCats, but watched it periodically. The new one doesn't look bad from what I've seen here, but I also have to agree with Ice_Wall. I'm getting a bit sick of the anime-style art as well.

Yep first thing I thought when I saw the Panthro picture too.

Sadly they are bringing back Snarf New Thundercats Details.

I hated Snarf.

As for Lion-O Younger. Those that remember the series, he was a little kid but when the ship crashed he aged in his hibernation chamber becoming an adult and the sword of Omens was suppose to have helped him mature mentally. Which I always thought was a little too weird.

Hey if this generation of kids only way they can get good cartoons is redesigns of our old ones. Awesome.

Hey, now. Avatar:TLA is way better than everything I had cartoon-wise when I was a kid. Well, not everything, but a lot of it.

As to new Thundercats - if I see it and like it, I'll watch it. If not, then not.

Majority stunk. Avatar was one of the exceptions not the rule.

The designs look a hell of a lot better than the Bruce Timm-esque crap that's been popular for a while now.
