  1. I know they aren't, but I was looking at my bank statement about a week ago and thought this was funny.

I rented 2 BD, The Hunger Games and Safe. Then NCsoft reimburses me, for the game closing I assume, for the same amount. Crazy.

I think you would have to root it or something. I doubt the Viz Manga app works on the Kindle Fire. Amazon doesn't have as many apps as the regular Android does.

I thought about subscribing especially because it launched on my birthday. The only series I would read is probably One Piece though, but I'm not caught up to where the Japanese are. I've only read up to volume 64.

Yeah, same day our game made their own announcement. Coincidence?

    Dun dun dun...

I'm pretty sure the set is Blu-Ray only too, no DVD release. The trailer even says Blu-Ray.

There's one with a guy who sees something outside of the White House and gets caught up in some strange plot. And then there's one where a guy wakes up in a room with no memory, there are a bunch of other people in a similar situation, and one of them has ears that pull away from his head to reveal a bizarre compartment that may have had guns in it. And all of that is jumbled in my brain, evoked by this "Phantom" anime for some reason, though I'm pretty sure those memories involve at least two different anime.
The first one you're thinking of is Eden of the East, I think. That was a good series and the first movie was good too. Haven't seen the second one though.

I haven't seen Phantom yet, but I want too.
  6. I'm a little surprised no ones brought up the rumor about Tiger and Bunny being on Toonami. Viz started revealing the dub cast (more) for it the same day as this Toonami thing. Coincidence?
  7. It's only 3 episodes in, but I'm really liking the new Lupin, Lupin the Third - The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. It's animated by Madhouse, directed by Sayo Yamamoto and the character designs are by Takeshi Koike (Redline). Sayo did Michiko to Hatchin, but I haven't seen that. She did background art for Redline though, most of her work is doing storyboards.

Be warned though, there's a lot of nakedness in it (not including the OP and ED, which has a lot). Except for the 3rd episode. Fujiko manages to wear her clothes for most of it. Then Goemon shreds them to pieces in the last minute.
  8. Now, I'm not sure if this is appropriate since it's another game. But it's a webcomic, so that makes it OK. Right?

Mass Effect 3 is coming out soon, so a Japanese gaming site and a artist made a webcomic to explain the series. I've only played a small snippet of the first game, but I know enough to really enjoy this.

"Teach me! Professor Mordin!" (translated and is read right-to-left)
  9. Finished Redline, and wow. Freaking amazing film. The visuals, art, animation, characters, audio, music, sound effects... everything about it is great. On top that, I think one of the amazing things is that it was hand drawn. 100,000 cels and took about 7 years to make. Fantastic movie and I would would give it more than a +1 if I could.

  10. Lets see...

ANNCast - Talks about anime and the industry as a whole. They also usually have interviews with people in the industry. Anime News Network stuff (ANN in the shows name) and slightly dabbles in live action movies.
Anime World Order Podcast - Anime and sometimes manga.
Bagged and Boarded - Part of the SModcast family. Talk about nerdy and geeky stuff, comics, etc. Interviews with actors and other people.
Comedy Bang Bang - Comedy skits and comedy interviews. Earwolf family.
The Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast - Movie reviews, mostly bad ones and ones so bad there good (the greatest). Slightly dabbles in anime (the host writes reviews and articles)
How Did This Get Made - Movie reviews of bad movies. Earwolf family. Sometimes does interviews with people who where a part of the movies too.
SModcast - SModcast family. Kevin Smith and producer/friend Scott Mosier talk about stuff, comedy.
That Anime Show - Voice actors and ADR directors Terri Doty and J. Michael Tatum interview and talk about acting with other VA's. Comedy, anime
Voiceprint with Trevor Devall and Guests - Similar to TAS, but also talk about western cartoons.
SModCo SMidnight Show - Similar to Bagged and Boarded, same host, Matt Cohen, just started this one might drop it later. SModcast family.

And some others here and there. But that's a lot, sometimes I don't have enough time to listen to them all. >_<; Luckily a few of them have very random schedules and only release an episode every month or more. I might check out the Nerdist, I've heard good thing.

Coincidentally, its on sale at both Right Stuf and Amazon. I'm tempted to get it, already it have it on DVD, along with Shigurui.
  12. From what I understand (which is very little to be honest ), all cel based animations, pre/early-2000, got recorded onto film. The cels don't really matter after that. That film can then be copied over and over (a master print or film negative I think it's called). A HD remaster can be made from this master film. Like in the case of Yuyu and DBZ and others. The DBZ blu-ray 1.1 has a 7 min or so feature that talks about remaster process. Never seen it though.

Sometimes blu-rays are just upscaled DVDs. Basically, DVD footage blown up to 1080. Several of FUNimation's releases are just that. Samurai Champloo, Claymore, OHSHC and others. They might look good, but not as good if they where done from a original film. But, arguably, still better than DVD even if upscaled by your own player. Unless that much of a improvement doesn't matter. As to why that happens... I'm not sure. I've heard a few times it's because those shows were done on a computer and were not cels/ on film. So they don't have the right resolution for HD (unless it was a movie). The shows were probably only made for standard def TV cause HDTV didn't exist then. Other reasons are Japan never gave them the right masters.

Anyhoots, it's all personal preference. I never owned YuYu Hakusho before, and now I do and it looks good on my 1080p monitor. Better than a DVD would.

And releasing a single season or series on a disc... from what I understand (very little ), do to DVD (and probably BD) video standards/specification, that's impossible. A DVD data disc, sure. But you need the right player and such in order to play it (they are cheap I think). You would also either have to make it yourself or get a bootleg. Again, do to standards. Maybe you can get more on a DVD video, but there would be a drop in quality. The most I've seen on a DVD is about 7 episodes.

One Piece... those are being re-released in 26 episode sets, but they have to be first released in 13. To make profit and such. Man, I can't wait for this summer. Season 4!

Still haven't seen that thing, not sure if I want too...

According to the Mania forums (aodvd), the BD looks like crap.
  16. ... HD.

Basically, I've been watching a 1990's Japanese cartoon called YuYu Hakusho on Blu-ray. And It looks quite good for being old. Comparison of the SD to HD. Not only that it takes me back to when I was teen and was watching it Toonami, nearly 10 years ago. I've also been looking at several screenshots of the new Dragonball Z Blu-rays compared to the DVDs, and those are looking good too.

If you could choose any cartoon or cartoons to get a HD remaster, which ones would you pick? I've heard a few times Batman TAS would be great, and I agree. I also think Superman TAS would be good. IIRC that show had a lot of bright colors, compared to Batman lol, so I think that would stand out quite well at 1080p.
  17. There is one little thing that's been bugging me about this Coffee Talk...

HTML 5 is going to be supporting video, not 4. =/

    I don't see it.
  19. Finished watching Sword of the Stranger last night. Has a simple and straight forward story/plot, but it's a good watch.

    +1

I also just started watching the Yu Yu Hakusho Blu-rays. The show looks good in HD.
  20. Probably, Higurashi: When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni). According to wikipedia the scene is probably in episode 20.

Sadly it's out of print in the US and FUNimation lost the rights. It apparently underperformed. Luckily for me I bought the first boxset of it a few years ago. :P
  21. Yeah, I think they're left over from when Sentai was simulcasting it or something. But you get to see the fanservice censor free on DVD and BD.

And that Right Stuf 12 days thing is annoying me lol. There is about 1 thing from each day I want (as apposed to last year where there was nothing), but I just recently ordered the Yu Yu Hakusho Spirit Gun Bundle and am running low on money. >_<

Got the BDs too, didn't really notice any censoring.

Home video releases for anime are hardly ever censored. Even Japanese networks have Standards and Practices. =P Which is why broadcasts get censored and... well, home video doesn't .
Home releases also have touched up art and animation.

If you have Netflix instant streaming those could be uncensored. But I could be wrong. But the DVDs and BDs are on sale at Right Stuf, 23.99 and 27.99.

Yeah, the basics of the plot are similar.

I have hopes this movie will do well. And I find all of the pessimism funny. Especially since casting hasn't been set in stone yet, and we only got a very brief plot summary.

Now.... I just wish the BD of the anime wasn't so expensive. About 37 at Right Stuf and 30 at Amazon. Grrr... Curse you Honneamise/Bandai Visual

Under settings there are options to show the whole page on Enter (when I enter a new page) or on Exit (shows the whole page after the last panel). I have it set to On Exit, and I can read whole page with out zooming. It's a bit difficult, I just like the option of pinching to zoom and moving freely on a page.

Besides, I've only purchased 2 books so far on it (only had the ipod for about 3 weeks). The Walking Dead Volumes 2 and 3. I have a physical copy of volume 1...

I have it on my iPod, I like it. Just wish there was an option to turn off Guided View. With that said, I like Guided View but sometimes I don't want to use it.
