Stone Armor - Granite Armor
Wow! Changing the Granite armor would be a radical move that I'm surprisingly okay with. People who still want to change from itty bitty to a huge behemoth could shell out the 10 bucks and buy the Science pack after all (it really is worth it just for the emotes and costumes folks).
I'd love to be able to retain the overall shape and look of a character after turning on Granite Armor,
sounds great!
Note, I do not already have a stone tank to have become attatched to the current granite look, but that is because I never wanted to make one because of the current granite look, a change would cause me to finally use stone armor on a character creation.
People that already have a stoney probably should have more weight in their vote I suppose, but I'd still love to be able to not turn into a stone clone of every other granite armor using character if I decide to make one myself.
If you did this, I would actually play stone armor. I can never forgive the appearance of this power, and I find that alone almost worse than the various penalties associated with it. I say make the changes! Maybe there can be a huge option that would take up one costume slot for those who still want to have the classic granite look. Sort of like the VEAT thing. And before you start ******** about having that take up one whole costume slot, people, remember that you can't see any of your costumes while in granite anyway
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.

I only have a couple Stone Armor characters, and only one of them is currently high enough to get Granite.
I'd vote YES for the change. While I kinda half-like the changing into a huge DE model, I'd like being able to change/color a new version even more.
GRIGNAK NO MORE! Long live the new Granite!

I don't play Stone armor and I probably won't even after this change (never really cared to be a big, hulking, slow, not-as-physically-powerful-as-you-are-big, kind of characters), but had an interesting idea.
What if some powers where 'costumes'? Like, upon activating them, you transform into a custom creation you made and colored? Kind of like a 'forced' costume change.
In the power customizer, when you're gussying up granite armor, it's like putting together an alternate costume but make options only available through that power. So you can change the size sliders, make your character sleek and metallic or rough and rocky, give them long gangly crystal arms or a traditional 'armor' with chest plate + helmet (made of rock, lava, crystal or ore of course). Activating the power just activates that costume linked to that power. Changing your actual costume will give you further chances to try different looks as well.
Another power like this I'd love it on is Domination. I already use /binds to transform my character upon activation but you only have so many slots for costumes. Options for that could be added in the future like various auras, again size slider and so on.
Same for Khelds. Their transformations could have specific 'alien' parts only available to those powers...
Of course, if that were possible the devs probably would have already done it. And even if they did, they probably wouldn't have all the options lined up yet but it's still interesting to ponder. That'd sure give Jay and BaB a workout
Kill the current Granite Armor, throw it in the swamp, let it sink to the bottom, and let us never discuss it again.
I trust that whatever BaB comes up with, it will look better and be more elegant than replacing my avatar with a DE mob.

For those of you with Stone Armor characters, how attached are you to the current appearance of "Granite Armor"? There are a number of issues with Granite Armor that could be elegantly solved by changing the VFX of the power into something more akin to the other armor toggles in the set. IE, your player model and costume wouldn't go away, there would just be a new set of 'Granite' armor pieces overlaid.
I haven't made any decision to do this, it's just one of the options for dealing with the multiple issues we have with Granite Armor and I wanted to get a sense of how many of you guys wouldn't be able to adapt to a change like this. Before anyone asks, no...we couldn't have it both ways. |
Whichever gets i16 live sooner.
Otherwise, change is good.

I've been playing a /Stone brute since shortly after villains launched and have never tired of the current granite fx. I'd much rather the fx fix the theme of the power instead of like the other armors. I shall initially say no to changing the look of granite but first I'd like to see the proposed change first. If it turns out looking something like Rock Armor then most definitely no.

BABs, an idea:
If it is not possible to do it both ways through power customization, what if there are 2 versions of the power?
Stone Armor could be a 10 power set, with 2 mutually exclusive granite powers.
This sounds like quite a major thing to do for 1 set, but I am thinking that it could let you be more flexible with power adjustments and customization in other sets, too.
For example, you could get around the cottage rule the same way you did with epic pools. Just add powers. The new granite armor could be the one that works with other toggles but isn't quite as ridiculously strong itself, as is being discussed already.
A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!

Would it be possible, BaB, to give the current costume a monochrome, granite-looking color, including the skin, when you activate Granite, but otherwise look like the costume? I'm thinking of what Kevin from Ben 10: Alien Force looks like when he creates his skin of armor from what he absorbs. You can still see his features and what kind of clothes he's wearing, but it's a solid color.
This would allow people to keep their costume look (colors withstanding), wouldn't make the size bigger if people prefer to play smaller sized characters, and wouldn't be yet another layer of chunky armor like the other stone armor powers. By doing this, I would assume you'd also allow for tinting of the second-skin armor, or else we'd be back to the same thing we currently have, but without swapping the character model. |
My perspective on the graphics as someone who has played Stone Armor to 50 on two different tankers:
- I really dislike the looks of the non-Granite armors... they're asymmetric and don't cover enough of the body to visually provide much protection. On a large model Rock Armor isn't completely horrid but you still have the problem of a lack of visual protection. On a small character the Rock Armor is a huge, ungainly horse collar.
- On the other hand, Granite is symmetric and it does have the appearance of actually providing protection. The two major downsides are the fact that you're playing a DE monster and that every Granite tanker looks exactly like every other.
A while back there was a random bug in Granite's appearance that left you with your character model unaffected but still had all the benefits and penalties of Granite. I have to say that I REALLY liked that bug; it let my character look like himself while still having the protection of Granite.
So, the bottom line for me would be a tentative "no" depending on just what BaB's means by additional pieces of rock. If I'm just trading an uncustomizable DE monster for more of the ugly asymmetrical blobs of stone then I'm not in favor. If on the other hand I'm trading the current Granite look for something symmetrical with complete or near complete coverage then it would be a qualified "yes".

To put it simply Babs if you change the Granite Armor Model, you will be getting the bill for my funeral...
On to what you want to know:
1) I won't leave the game over it
2) You can bet that I will kill you every chance I get in PvP zones
I love Love LOVE the current Granite Armor Model! That was one of the very first things that both surprised me and fascinated me when I first joined this game. For days I stopped leveling and ran around with my level 10 Defender using sprint to try and glimpse another Granite Armor user. After about a week I was a going to give up hope when I ran back to Atlas Park and one was Logging off. I took a quick picture of him right before he faded and got the most perfect shot that I still have to this day. It must have been in the middle of a dancing pose. After that day I leveled 6 Stone Armor users and still intend to level more!
If you have to change it (It seems like the majority is for the change) please make it a look that keeps a couple of the aspects (Ex. Elongated Arms, Square Shoulders).
P.S. I haven't read up on it yet however if its true that Castle is going to Nerf Granite Armor in favor of buffing the rest of the set then you can rest easy in PvP zones as Castle will be my priority. If only there was a dull stick for a Katana blade...and a 'Gouge eyes out' animation attack...

*edit*
Also if this go's thrue and provided its possible any chance granite could suppress the other armours instead of toggling them off that way those of us that like the lairing effect of the armours could have another layer to add
oh and i realise some people like the fact that granite makes you bigger so could it be worked in such a way that toggling on granite increased your size thoe not as huge as this guy
I sense the something simlar to the flight animation changes (response wise) brewing behind this potential change. >.< looks like this will be painful.
Worse comes to worse, we'll keep Granite as it is, and customizable Granite will be "in the works" for a long while until BaBs finds a way to make it work and make everyone happy.
Of course, every four days someone will come with a whine rant demanding for custom Granite, and asking why are the Devs so lazy, and why do they hate stone armor, and that they never give players what they want, and 'wah' and 'wah' and 'wah.'
We'll just have to educate then one by one each time they start a thread.
I would vote to change it BaBs.

Simple answer from me: NO.
A choice of selectable models - maybe. But I love the current Granite look and I'd be disappointed if it changed. Not quitting level disappointed, but disappointed nonetheless.

I have been a granite lover since before its current appearance. From the old days, when I walked to school both ways, in the snow, barefoot. Back when you really looked like a poo monster.
I would not want to change the look. Seeing the current model, with Rooted on, do Eviserate is cool to me.
For most of the people that say that the final armor leaves you with little in the way of looking unique: I would say, wait till after i16 hits. The numerous color options that can be applied to Rooted and Mudpots, does afford a unique look while in Granite.
Is it a perfect solution, no.
Would I like to see something new, sure.
I would prefer we use any of the DE models for the various looks.
Or, if by changing the Armor completely, we could allow other travel options besides TP, then I would be in favor of it.
I just would not like to lose the flavor of the stomping giant.

Like everyone I can't say yes or no until I see it. I'm quite open to the idea though.
