So they have to make a choice: do they put that cash into game A and make a 10% profit, or put it into game B and make a 2% profit? Before, they had enough money to do both. Now they don't. So they chose game A, and we got shafted because we play game B.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that was the calculation that took place, and I can't really blame them for making the call if that was the case. I can, and do, blame them for not selling the game to someone who would be happy to make a meager 2% profit. Or for releasing the source code to the Titan Network, making the IP public domain, and wishing us all the best of luck. Or for spinning off Paragon Studios as an independent company, to succeed or fail on their own two feet. Or any other possible solution that would not result in the death of my favorite game.

NCSoft has spent years honing their reputation as a company that is willing to kill off a game with no mercy and no consideration for the players or developers. I wouldn't have started playing CoH if I had first heard of the game after the death of Tabula Rasa. And I hope the people playing Guildwars or Lineage or Aion today are comfortable knowing that someday all of their characters will be wiped with little warning and no hope of reprieve.

Sigh. Although, in all fairness, anyone playing any MMO should always be prepared for such a possibility. It's not so much and "if" as it is a "when?"
I could easily deal with the closure of the game if things had been on the downfall for some time. People leaving, Freedom and Virtue becoming ghosttowns, Paragon Studios laying off employees, nothing new coming out for some time, you know, all the signs that a company and it's game is circling the drain.

But not like this. This was a sudden and out of left field slam on the game and the company. This is why it hurts so much, it was unexpected and nobody was prepared for it.

A fellow CoH'er on another forum put it this way for his theory about the shutdown instead of sale.

    Quote:
Companies are always schizophrenic in these cases: the "new thing" (usually the dreamchild of the CEO or senior VP) consumes all available resources, resulting in staff for the "old stuff" being either fired outright (to cut costs) or press-ganged onto the new project, no matter how badly it stinks. And regardless of how warmly they encourage other companies to hire their freshly-fired staff, I guarantee they will not grant any leeway on the "non-compete" clauses in said ex-employees' contracts, so they can utilize their hard-earned game developer skills asking "do you want fries with that?".

The company will never sell its older (but successfull) project to a competitor for fear the old project will bleed off sales the "new thing" rightfully should garner; had the "new thing" actually gotten into production, the old product would have been killed off anyway, for the same reason.

Why, yes, I have been on the receiving end of such a MCF...
  2. I don't know if they'll release restrictions on the game or not, but at this point don't waste your money on time cards. They won't work.

To the Taxibots! No other Supergroup helped us survive like they did, asking for nothing in return. May their spirit never fade from this game.

That's not unusual. When my dad got Windows Vista, CoH wouldn't work at all. No matter how much I tweaked stuff, no amount of help from the forums and a week and a half of e-mails and talking on the phone with support helped any.

Other people never had any problems with Vista, and the crashing I had on my dad's comp were never heard of.

Look at the crashes and issues with Bethesda games Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and even Skyrim, and people can have crashes and lockups that baffle people with the same rig, ram and settings but never see the same kind of bug someone else will.

People have all manner of computers and with all their different settings different issues can happen quite easily.

    Bind question

Beyond that, shouldn't there be all the options available in the Options: Key Binds screen?

    At least for movement.
  6. That sounds exactly like what was happening to my computer last year. It'd shut down with no warning, no beep, nothing. Just 'BLIP' off.

Having not cleaned it for well over a year, I opening it up and pulled out my graphics card.

Now, this card has a MASSIVE heat sink in a spiral shape about an inch tall.

The entire thing was CLOGGED with dirt. My dad just stared at it in shock. He'd never seen THAT much dirt inside ANY computer component.

    Ever.

Compressed air wasn't near being capable, it was THAT compacted.

So I found an old toothbrush (one from my childhood even) and dad started to brush out the guck. It took him about a half hour of brushing to get it all out.

The instant shut-down didn't happen with other MMOs, but did with some FPSs (not all though) and with CoH. It wasn't even consistent with how much things were used, my compy never shut down while playing Crysis (on mid-to-high details) but WOULD for Doom 3. It was just a matter of fate and randomness it seemed.

It's entirely possible that your system is overheating due to dust/dirt clogging something, or something is preventing it from venting the heat properly. It may be something else. We don't know, but since that's the easiest to check, it should be done so the people more in the knowhow of computer repair can mentally scratch that possibility off the list.

Checking this is the easiest and quickest 'First Step' in computer repair, especially with the symptoms you've described. And what you described doesn't even have to be a consistent problem from one game to the next.
  7. Those are also large in the belly while the roman stuff is tight.

And NPCs get unique costume options that we don't/can't get.

There just isn't the variety of things to do to keep me happy any longer and sustain the feeling that I'm role-playing a character to the fullest possible extent.

So, I am taking the advice of many on these boards by taking a long break and going Premium (should start tomorrow) since I've found another MMO that offers what is for me, a more well-rounded RPG experience.
I'm curious what the other MMO is, as every single game I've played ends up being
    "Player A" in
    "Conflict of Some Kind" with
    "Computer Player B" solved via
    "Conflict Resolution"

with the 'resolution' being anything from punching, shooting, singing as a spoony bard all the way to genocide, speed dating or catgirls and tentacles.

The core mechanics of the original DOS version of Sid Meier's Civilization hasn't changed much at all through the other 4X style games, from Call to Power, Civilization 2-3-4-5-Revolution, Alpha Centauri, they all involve the same enemy civilizations in conflict with mine as I build more monuments in the wrong era in the wrong city-state.

FPS's aren't much different, as even when the mechanics change, you're still shooting someone with a weapon of some kind. Single shot rifle, high tech railgun, semi-futuristic pistol, alien parasite energy carbine, it's all used in the same way to kill Nazis, alien zealots, Illuminati conspiracy supporters or alien harvesters.

You know, I'd kind of expect that kind of costume from a modern fangirl-type of super hero. Look at how many people cosplay in outfits that don't make sense IRL (and some custom made ones look not only faithful to the character, but awesome).

I would easily see a rookie hero putting together a busy outfit that'd belong in a JRPG.

I'd love some JRPG options myself. I do love the look of a group of belts hanging loose on one side of the hips.

Well, I've had my subscription on a six month sub, so I have a set amount of money being spent each month (although, in reality it was all up front instead of monthly)

I haven't spent a penny more than what the subscription asked for. So, unless they're stealing my money without me knowing about it, it's a free bonus.

I've already spent X dollars on my subscription, so I don't see how you can say that the loyalty rewards are costing me money.

It's much like the Veteran Rewards. Was I paying to get Vet Rewards, or were they a free bonus for keeping my subscription going?

But how are loyal customers being disadvantaged in the future?

I didn't lose anything in anyway when the Preorder Arachnos Helmets were made available in the VIP Rewards (in fact, I gained from it, since I got access to the helmets I didn't have).

I haven't lost anything when the Vanguard costume parts were put on the market. The non-loyalty programmers had to pay for each part. I didn't. So no loss there.

I'm curious as to how I'm being disadvantaged for keeping my sub going.

Not in the least. The other guy either talked a salesman down, knows someone at the store personally, or maybe even related to the owner or some other reason that got him the lower price.

Could be a coupon from a magazine that I don't get. I dunno, nor do I care.

Do you get upset that other people get X cents/dollars off of a product with a coupon when you yourself don't have that coupon?

I knew the best possible options available to Russia on the first turn and the best statistical results Germany could have based on that Russian player's various options. I had a 1-inch binder "playbook" of various scenarios covering both "statistically probable" outcomes and my "more likely" results that came from the "bad dice" curse.

Yeah, I didn't get out much.
Heck, a few times I've played Risk against myself, both playing it making up a story as I played, other times playing to win as hard and fast as I could. A couple times I even played the Doom boardgame against myself, which is basically Hero Quest with a different set of pieces.

It was the only way I *could* play the Doom boardgame, all my friends weren't interested in it.

  17. It may be a joke on the Dev's part. In the normal bug in newspaper missions, the name comes up as Boss_Name, however this one is Boss Name, with no underscore, and his dialog is he's still 'inactive', so that's why he's not a combat boss.

Kind of like how they added in the 5th Column saying that their Mekmen were using a Hard Light disguise, since hostages would sometimes default to a 5th Column Mekman.

If you think CoH's Forums are an unpleasant and poisonous place to post...well, you should try out WoW's.

Well, that is your opinion and you're welcome to it.

However, they were added to the game, and before they changed the drop rate, the only 4 temp powers out there were expensive as all heck because they *only* dropped in the low levels with any certainty. Above level 15 (or so it seemed) they disappeared completely.

And they are not entirely useless; they add a good bit of extra damage to characters that lack full on attack chains or without much direct damage. I can't count how many Plasmatic Tasers and Revolvers I've used on my Controllers.
  21. But it doesn't have any attacks. It has a hold, a cone immobilize, a To-hit Debuff power and no direct damage attacks.
