Computer powers off when playing
1. I don't see any image.
2. This sounds like a hardware/OS thing, not something that City Of Heroes is doing specifically.
Hmm, just thinking out loud, but are you sure it's not shutting down due to high CPU temperature? Some motherboards (maybe all of them nowadays) have this feature.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
your CPU and/or vid card might be overheating and shutting down- that happened to me for a while on my old system.
Pop the case and blow out your fans with some compressed air, see if that helps.

That sounds exactly like what was happening to my computer last year. It'd shut down with no warning, no beep, nothing. Just 'BLIP' off.
Having not cleaned it for well over a year, I opening it up and pulled out my graphics card.
Now, this card has a MASSIVE heat sink in a spiral shape about an inch tall.
The entire thing was CLOGGED with dirt. My dad just stared at it in shock. He'd never seen THAT much dirt inside ANY computer component.
Ever.
Compressed air wasn't near being capable, it was THAT compacted.
So I found an old toothbrush (one from my childhood even) and dad started to brush out the guck. It took him about a half hour of brushing to get it all out.
The instant shut-down didn't happen with other MMOs, but did with some FPSs (not all though) and with CoH. It wasn't even consistent with how much things were used, my compy never shut down while playing Crysis (on mid-to-high details) but WOULD for Doom 3. It was just a matter of fate and randomness it seemed.
It's entirely possible that your system is overheating due to dust/dirt clogging something, or something is preventing it from venting the heat properly. It may be something else. We don't know, but since that's the easiest to check, it should be done so the people more in the knowhow of computer repair can mentally scratch that possibility off the list.
Checking this is the easiest and quickest 'First Step' in computer repair, especially with the symptoms you've described. And what you described doesn't even have to be a consistent problem from one game to the next.

Haven't had the computer a month yet, but I did check that and it was not that. Also it is not random. I played Champions for hours on end and then played City of heroes on all suggested setting and only COH makes my computer power off. Seems the LED temp has to be at 76 and no more than 80.

Hi Guys,
I am sure there was a thread in the Tech section that was very similiar to this problem. I cannot get a linkie just now sorry.
In that thread we all agreed that starting/running the game was causing shut down due to CPU overheating.
By using the windows task manager to monitor the CPU usage we were seeing a 99/100% continuous CPU loading from when the game got to the first splash screen. It also dropped back to normal low levels if you quit the game before it crashed.
What was causing this ie Windows Version (Number and 32/64 bit version) or drivers or the "Game" were all debated to no satisfaction.
We never found the cause or a solution but like the OP said it did stop me playing on that particular gaming laptop. I had been using the same rig and drivers for about two years with no problems then about Issue 20 (ish!) the overheating/shutdown stuff started.
Cheers.

CoH uses OpenGL.
Apples. Oranges.

This may sound odd, and may not apply since I play on a laptop, however...
As I said above, I play on a laptop plugged in through HDMI to my TV. I noticed, just after I purchased it and started to play again, that after playing for a while it would just shut down.
My first conclusion was, as everyone mentioned, that it was overheating. I then pushed the power button and it said it was coming back from Hibernation.
It made no sense since I was mid-game, but maybe the laptop wasn't recognizing the game as activity? I couldn't really tell you.
I disabled hibernation and also play with the laptop open, instead of closing the screen shut, and it has not happened again.
If your computer is a desktop the screen recommendation does not apply, but maybe try disabling Hibernation.
Either it'll work, or it won't... it's worth a shot.

It's not just you.
Going to extra trouble to rule out heat-related issues is worth it, it helped with me. Mine was doing it continuously, even after cleaning out the case and cleaning all fans; it turned out that the thermal paste that was connecting one of my graphics sub-cards to the heat sink (I run a GTX295, which is two smaller cards shipped in SLI mode) had gone bad. I ended up having to get the graphics card replaced under warranty.
So when you say you're not seeing any temperatures above 80C (which is pretty hot), is that the CPU temperature, the case temperature, or the GPU temperature? Because the GPU temperature is probably the more likely problem, because CoH isn't all that CPU intensive, but with all these over-the-top particle effects rendered in OpenGL, it's very, very, very GPU intensive. I use CPUID HW Monitor to check temperatures, so make sure that you're reading all of the temperature probes, not just the one on the CPU chip.
And, I have to say this: even after getting the card warranty replaced, it still happens to me: if I run several consecutive 24-man raids, or an entire evening of 40-man mothership raids, my computer will hard-crash.
Guess I can't play this as often as I used to. At least I have 1 level 50 right now. ::Sigh::

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but If you are unwilling to do these simple things and prefer to whine and mope about how you can't play, then there's not much else that can be done for you.

I had an overheat problem like this. However the one I had was shutting off in some other games and there was only one game I could play. What is your graphic card? Even if your cardis a good one who was provider (for example asus, zotec etc) some providers make test suitcases (cough like asus for geforce9800 gtx or previous geforce580 gtx ones) for some cards and they are not good at handling overheating (I learned this hard way)
My solution was opening side panel of m computer putting a regular fan next to it and setting it at high speed. You can't believe the performance increase I got. Not only shutting off stopped games started to play way more smoother and faster but that was only a temporary solution for summer.
if you want to see if the cpu run prime 95 or intel burn in..it stress just the cpu. one thing also to watch with hardware monitor is your power supply holding up under load. with the hardware monitor program watch your power supply voltages..12v leg..the other isue that will cause lock up and crashes in the mb chipset getting to hot and locking up. i would watch the temps on them if your mb has sensors on them. also if your video card is one of those over clocked cards try setting it back to factory and see if you get and hangs. one last thing..most vendor have the gpu fans set to a low speed to keep the noise down...these fan speed profiles are fine for web surfing but sometime they dont spin the fan up before it starts to over heat and lock up.i would see if you can bump your gpu speed up and see if the crashes take longer.
No matter what settings I put my Cyberpower PC on, it cuts off. I am attaching an image link to what Operating System and set up I have. Hope this isn't an issue with my power source. . .
