Game causes computer to shut off, restart or screen to simply go blank. I know this because I have played Champions Online without this happening as well as DC Universe Online. Not sure if you know how they work on computers but it would seem that I can play either of those games without a problem at all (especially Champions) and yet when I play City of Heroes even on the minimum settings it gives me the above mentioned problems. That is why I am convinced it is the game itself.

Quote:Guess I can't play this as often as I used to. At least I have 1 level 50 right now. ::Sigh::Hi Guys,
I am sure there was a thread in the Tech section that was very similiar to this problem. I cannot get a linkie just now sorry.
In that thread we all agreed that starting/running the game was causing shut down due to CPU overheating.
By using the windows task manager to monitor the CPU usage we were seeing a 99/100% continuous CPU loading from when the game got to the first splash screen. It also dropped back to normal low levels if you quit the game before it crashed.
What was causing this ie Windows Version (Number and 32/64 bit version) or drivers or the "Game" were all debated to no satisfaction.
We never found the cause or a solution but like the OP said it did stop me playing on that particular gaming laptop. I had been using the same rig and drivers for about two years with no problems then about Issue 20 (ish!) the overheating/shutdown stuff started.
Cheers. -
Quote:Haven't had the computer a month yet, but I did check that and it was not that. Also it is not random. I played Champions for hours on end and then played City of heroes on all suggested setting and only COH makes my computer power off. Seems the LED temp has to be at 76 and no more than 80.That sounds exactly like what was happening to my computer last year. It'd shut down with no warning, no beep, nothing. Just 'BLIP' off.
Having not cleaned it for well over a year, I opening it up and pulled out my graphics card.
Now, this card has a MASSIVE heat sink in a spiral shape about an inch tall.
The entire thing was CLOGGED with dirt. My dad just stared at it in shock. He'd never seen THAT much dirt inside ANY computer component.
Ever.
Compressed air wasn't near being capable, it was THAT compacted.
So I found an old toothbrush (one from my childhood even) and dad started to brush out the guck. It took him about a half hour of brushing to get it all out.
The instant shut-down didn't happen with other MMOs, but did with some FPSs (not all though) and with CoH. It wasn't even consistent with how much things were used, my compy never shut down while playing Crysis (on mid-to-high details) but WOULD for Doom 3. It was just a matter of fate and randomness it seemed.
It's entirely possible that your system is overheating due to dust/dirt clogging something, or something is preventing it from venting the heat properly. It may be something else. We don't know, but since that's the easiest to check, it should be done so the people more in the knowhow of computer repair can mentally scratch that possibility off the list.
Checking this is the easiest and quickest 'First Step' in computer repair, especially with the symptoms you've described. And what you described doesn't even have to be a consistent problem from one game to the next. -
What does this mean? Champions Online has some type of comic book shading graphics, facial movement, and a lot of other things going on. So as a better example of a game pushing my graphics card I'd say Champions is definitely doing it but I can play that for hours and never get a computer shut down crash. Yet even on minimum setting City of Heroes crashes even when my Cyber Power PC's LED light is at 76.0 (right now the temperature has dropped so it is at 78.1). I'd love to play in Ultra Mode but it would keep crashing if I do that. I like playing City of Heroes better than this game I'm using as an example but if I can't get this working correctly I will be a former City of Heroes player.

No matter what settings I put my Cyberpower PC on, it cuts off. I am attaching an image link to what Operating System and set up I have. Hope this isn't an issue with my power source. . .

She has the Purgatory Sword. It's black and red. A nice action pose would be awesome. -
My Toon Is A Female, Does That Count?
Quote:I saw the new CoT yesterday for the first time, and realized that they finally added females to the group! =O_O=
Not sure if there's females in the various Mage categories, but there are certainly female minions. Considering that most of the people I've rescued from the CoT were civilian females, this makes sense to actually have female models. -

None of the old sets! I will only have Titan Weapons, Street Justice, Staff Fighting and what ever else new melee set they come out with.

With the coming of the gunslinger costume there should have been a new secondary that went with dual pistols, the only good idea I could think of was 'Whip':
BLASTER/ CORR SECONDARY: WHIP
Cracking Whip: Level 1 Close, Minor Damage
Lashing Whip: Level 2 Close, Moderate Damage
Binding Whip: Level 6 Close, Moderate Damaging Hold
Strangulation: Level 8 Close, High Damage
Sweeping Whip: Level 12 Close, Minor Damage, Chance to knock down
Strengthen Whip: Level 18 Increases whip damage, also emulates 3rd level Street Justice combo power
Not Enough: Level 26 Close, Lashing combination, chance for High Damage and increased combo
Note: unlike other secondary powersets this one would stop at level 26 and you would get no more secondary powers after said level.
Probably not what you're looking for, but I think it would be awesome!
Quote:Alright...this is my somewhat serious attempt at what a Ranged/Defense AT could look like.
Blapper
HP Base: 1017.4
HP Max: 1606.4
Damage Scale: .700
Range Scale?: assuming blasters are 1.00...blappers would be .75 (meaning that if a blasters attack has a 100' range, the blappers attack would have a 75' range)
"defense" scale: .5 (Tankers are 1.00 and Scrappers are .75) (Regen and WP would have to be looked at more closely)
No knockback protection.
No Mez Protection Toggles.
(armor set toggles or clicks that currently have mez protection now grant a bonus to the Blappers Inherent ability)
Toggles will be dropped if mezzed. (not just surpressed...except for current mez protection toggles-see inherent ability)
Inherent Power: Blapping
All attacks executed on an enemy within the melee damage range of 7' or less adds .5 mez protection (hold, stun, sleep) that lasts for 5s. Stackable. 3 points of protection max. Each additional attack restarts the 5s timer.
Current armor toggles that offer mez protection offer the Blapper a bonus to Blapping. All attacks executed with in the melee damage range of 7' or less now adds 1 mez protection that lasts for 5s. (so instead of taking 6 attacks to get to the 3 point max...it only takes 3. -

I forgot about the floating book emote! So I guess that's two so far. Also, I must agree that this group fits just well as an enemy group and of course as a group where former members will leave to use their powers as full heroes, rogue villains or straight up vigilantes. My toon is in the midst of the moral choice of becoming a villain just to attain soul mastery or stay a vigilante and attain the epic power to control fire. Either way it still represents the lore of the Circle of Thorns.
I am glad that people are taking interest in this group be it negative or positive interest. All of my toons will have some variation of the costume. I might even create a Broadsword/ Regeneration brute ONLY villain group to spark some more interest so maybe an expansion of the costume pieces may take place even if it means doing a small arc to attain some of the costume pieces rather than expanding the bundle.
I still want to be randomly ambushed by them so I feel more like this an epic archetype!

I'd love to see a new badge where we can have one of the Circle of Thorns Hordelings as a pet. First I thought one of the ghosts would be cool, but we already can get Soul Mastery if we go villain side and do the patron arc, so that would be redundant. A pet Hordeling would really make me feel more like I have a Circle of Thorns toon. Also if we could do a series of missions or some kind of arc to get Mages, Spectral Knights, or Spectral Followers to ambush us in any kind of mission just like Void Seekers do Kheldians that would be awesome and this would make your toon become a Circle of Thorns epic.
I'd love to see more Circle of Thorns arcs, more contacts, a way to get random Circle of Thorns missions via the paper or radio rather than just all random missions. I know I'm asking for a lot but I am a Circle of Thorns fan. -
Well as long as there is an ACTUAL response here then I will keep this thread going. I also wish there were a few more pieces in this costume bundle. As silly as the hats look I'd go for those too. Had to unlock the one sword they have for a broadsword toon by killing 200 Mages. About 90% of them were killed in Perez park in a two day period due to me having to work.
There are also no Circle of Thorn capes (as far as I know). A Circle of Thorn emote of some kind would be awesome, even though we could sort of count the holding torch emote as a Circle of Thorns emote.

Okay that's my rant for today.
Quote:No, the REAL problem is Death Mages have those awesome back spikes and we don't. I just saw those the other day and I was like 'OMG WANT!' Seems we didn't get ANY of the cool stuff the CoT wear... Those back spikes would be an awesome backpack option.
EDIT: LOL, didn't even see this thread was already dead and in the ground. :P -
You guys have serious contempt for Circle of Thorns. I am a new player and due to the new costumes I have become a fan of said group. I have a hero toon that will go full circle in order to get Soul Mastery. This will make her a Thorn Blade Wielder that can use the powers of the neither world and she can heal and resurrect herself. Basically I've built my own Circle of Thorns hybrid archetype and am playing as many Circle of Thorns missions as possible via radio missions and soon paper missions.
I have part of her back story written in game on her character profile. She is similar to Akarist in that she became sort of a hero after gaining the power of a Thorn Blade Wielder.
Anyway, that's enough of that because this freaks people out in game. Street Justice did not work out with this concept so I went back to my original Thorn Wielder Concept and now regret buying Street Justice. Maybe I can think of another toon to use it, but I doubt it. -
