I think the world is ready for City of Heroes 2. It needs better graphics, vastly improved gaming engine, more customizations, etc. CoH is a great game, but it is REALLY showing its age.

You are aware of the fact that a hypothetical City of Heroes 2 would almost certainly have much less content than our existing game?
Recreating every zone, mission map, costume part, and animation for a new graphics engine would require so much work that you probably won't find a producer willing to spend that amount of money up front.
So, a hypothetical City of Heroes 2 would probably start from scratch, and offer less powersets, less mission content, less endgame content, and quite possibly less fun. It would probably copy some features, but it's likely that it would be its own game and would have to grow its own features over time.
Also, since City of Heroes 1 cannot be merged into City of Heroes 2 in its entirety, it is by no means guaranteed that most players will migrate over to the new game. Ripping apart the player base could kill both games.
If you ask me, I really hope that the original version of the game still has quite some life time left. I wouldn't like it if I was forced to recreate all my characters in the new version of the game.

I realize the initial game will have issues. But with regular updates, which Paragon is very good at, it wouldn't be long until it's just as good as CoH 1.
Actually yeah, yeah it WOULD be a while till the game was at the level of content CoH is now.
The content is actually some of the hardest, most time-intensive stuff to put in.
Why do you think we're getting so many trials now instead if new contacts and long story arcs?
Why are the SSA runs 3 missions long?
Right now, if they launched CoH2, CoH development would grind to a halt unless one or the other was given to a completely new team and given the finances to actually build the title properly. Because of that, in the end, it'd probably be nearly unrecognizable as CoH after a time.
I'd be perfectly happy with CoH 1 being abandoned for a good CoH 2. I suspect a LOT of ex-players or just curious gamers would be, as well.

If you went back in time and told a 2004 player what our feature set was, they would assume you were playing City of Heroes Three.

I know I'd much prefer a fresh start in a brand new imaginary city. Hell with a new game they could even make it an international world setting with each zone in a different part of the world, space, moon, underwater, dimensions. Be a hero/villain and fight brand new opponents in the Arctic, Europe, Asia, Altantis, South American Jungles, deserts of North Africa, etc, etc, etc.
We need a World Of Heroes type of thing. The ability to hop countries and face different scenes, and environments. Maybe Ireland, Britain, all across America. Just something fun.

As to the rest of your points, I'll simply quote Arcanaville from May of last year:
The lesson every launch after City of Heroes has taught me is that new games rarely exceed expectations, new technology doesn't guarantee customers, and launching thin means crippling the game out of the gate. The "launching thin" part is the most important lession. If Paragon Studios wants to launch a CoH2, it has to launch with at least half the content of CoH1 in total which is several times more content than CoH1 had at launch. CO proved that the second time is not the charm, and DCUO proved that no amount of resources and brand recognition exempts you from the thin content rule.
So unless Paragon Studios has a hidden army of content writers banging out content for CoH2 so that it can launch with about ten times the content that DCUO launched with, it will be an immediate failure. There is simply no way PS can launch anything next year with enough content to not be a complete waste of time, even if they had started on CoH2 back in 2007. The content writing team simply doesn't exist that I can see, unless NCSoft hired them in secret without advertising. |
Never. If the new game could accommodate our existing characters, its technology would just be given to us, period. No one - NO ONE - decides to spend a huge amount of money and resources to make a new game that is not a new game. If the new game isn't different, it won't be made. Even if Positron lost his mind completely and decided to test this theory, no on would give him the resources to do it.
This is something MMO players want and MMO designers don't want. As long as that is true, its something MMO players won't get. Basically, the people that want to make this game but better work on this game, not the new game. The people who want to make something totally different work on the new game, not this game. The opportunity to launch an MMO as a lead designer or even as the core design team is very rare. Its often a once-in-a-lifetime event. Who would spend that lottery ticket on remaking something someone else already made? This is completely separate from all the problems with character transfer, with rebalancing, with community issues, with playerbase splitting. There are lots of technical reasons for not doing this. But even if you solve them all, the one you cannot solve is that no real game designer worth anything, when you ask them "how would you do it if you could do it" says "like that, only a little different." Someone who says that in the interview doesn't get the job as lead designer of the new MMO. |
There is also the fact that two other super hero MMOs have launched, and despite one having a huge amount of development resources, both are considered inferior to CoH.

One group wouldn't be: The developers.
As to the rest of your points, I'll simply quote Arcanaville from May of last year: Translation: your CoH2 would be available sometime after 2020. Translation: It is more likely that Paragon Studios will continue to work on THIS game, than create a completely new Superhero game. There is pretty much zero possibility that Paragon Studios would make CoH 2 at this point. They are investing in upgrading THIS game. There is also the fact that two other super hero MMOs have launched, and despite one having a huge amount of development resources, both are considered inferior to CoH. |
One of them also has characters in it that everyone in the WORLD recognizes, and CoH is still the better game.
|
However, this also bears repeating...
I think the world is ready for City of Heroes 2. It needs better graphics, vastly improved gaming engine, more customizations, etc. CoH is a great game, but it is REALLY showing its age.

I see no reason to point out graphics, engine, customizations, or age as reasons, either singly or together, to suggest it's time for any sequel to Co*. It's almost laughable, IMO, to suggest such.
There are other games that don't have the amazing amount of any of the first three by far, and the one of the biggest, yet oldest, ones is just as popular and ugly as ever, with the same awful interface.
Co* is fine. Content is more important than any graphics upgrade, by far. The engine works fine for me, but perhaps I'm not playing the same way you are. I can't figure out what you mean by "more customizations"... there's a ton of costume possibles, and there's a whole lot of color choosing for powers... not every power, I'll grant, but still...
...and "etc"? Really? What the heck is that supposed to mean? No giant tacos that poop ice cream, so the game needs a sequel?
Nosir, the game is fine. If you think you can do better, though, please do be my guest and create it, k?
/Might be more inclined to jump on the Co*2 bandwagon if you'd said "No Big Red Ball" or "No Moon Base", or "No grapple/web powers". NOW you're talking about shortcomings...
//well, maybe not.
August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.

Everytime someone post this kind of threads asking for CoH2, a lil kitty falls off a tree and dies against the floor.
These two bear repeating and being marked indelibly into everyone's minds regarding CoH2. It isn't going to happen. And I'm ok with that, absolutely.

One of the strengths of actively developed MMOs is their iterative nature. It's ability to grow and change.
The game, as it stands now, is almost a completely different animal from what it originally launched as.
So, in effect, we already HAVE CoH2. It's CoH.
I look forward to CoH 3, CoH 4, etc, etc as the game continues to develop.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

I for one have invested time and money just like a lot of vets and do not want to start over. I think if they keep improving the game engine we can have our cake and eat it. I only play this game on line because its the best. It has all i like and most of what i want and just keeps adding things i did not know i wanted every day
Some of my suggestions from posts i have done

If the graphics are a problem, then they can just upgrade them again like they did with ultra. Everything else is pretty good, and I like the graphics as they are anyway.
There's only one change I can think of that other games have that CoH hasn't got yet, which is moving while attacking. That is the only thing anyone has mentioned not liking when I tried showing off this game(not counting when someone doesn't like MMOs). Their words usually are something like 'I don't like games where you just stand there clicking buttons and watch', and in a way I agree that not being able to move during animations that are instant skills is pretty primitive compared to newer games.
Making a new game entirely isn't needed, as others already stated.

Nothing, to me at least, looks as badly done as moving while attacking. You'd need real world level graphics to have characters moving and attacking and having it look good. Rooting allows for far more solid animations, far more complex animations (See Staff fighting on Beta) and to give powers a real sense of weight and oomph to them, something you simply do not have when there is no rooting.
It also stops the horrible waist-rotation, where the characters top half and bottom half look totally disconnected. It's like the actiony version of the terribad female 'showing T and A at the same time' pose.
