Yeah. Will have to agree with the majority of posters. If you save the free points you earn, you'll have the powersets free.
Things like extra enhancement trays? That was never going to be a free to everyone thing. That was going to be a pay for item or a never will be item.
Extra costums slots? Likely the same thing.
Really. 5 costume slots was enough. 1 enhancement tray is enough.
They're nice perks but not needed.
Plus, are you going to actually play every powerset that becomes available?
I've been saving points because boring blast animations keeps me away from the blast sets. Nature's Affinty? It's a nice set *nod* I don't need it however...though, now that I think about it...Demon/Nature MM seems intriguing.

It'd be interesting to come up with a list (or wiki page) that listed all the new power sets that have been added since launch, and if they were free or part of a box set/purchasable from the market.
... I mean, most people know this, but it'd be nice to have a chart or something to point people to when we get silly complaints like this one. |
Melee: Street Justice, Titan Weapons, Staff Fighting
Ranged: Beam Rifle, Water Blast
Support: Beast Mastery, Nature Affinity
Freedom went live in late September 2011, so say we've had 11 monthly stipends from then until now. 11*400=4400, enough to pay for five and a half purchaseable sets -so stipend alone means you cannot get two of them. It'll be enough for six come September, but by then Bio armor will most likely be added, leaving stipend-alone purchases still two short.
The Tier 9 VIP, though, has 11*550=5500 points, enough to pay for another one and almost two. So the Tier 9 VIP is one short. If Bio armor is added in September and nothing else is added in October, the Tier 9 VIP will be able to get all extant purchaseable power sets.
I leave it to someone else to compile the list of VIP-free powers added to the game.
For my part...I mostly just don't care. My only purchased power set has been Titan Weapons. I don't have to have the new shiny, and if I *were* super determined to experience them I could always (as a VIP) hit them on beta and decide if they were something I wanted instead of all the other options 800 PP gets me.
So far, the Free for VIP powersets are (Or are going to be):
Dark Control Dark Assault Darkness Affinity Martial Combat Martial Assault |

Well, thumbnail sketch from the market of purchasable powersets that are not VIP content:

And then I go back to the thought of, just because it's an option, would you play it?
Does someone make and actually stay with every new character they make with a new powerset?

To answer everyone in regards to what I do with my points ; I save them for power sets, though unfortunately I never have enough to get the said powerd while being tier9 and end up having to purchase points.
|
If you're T9, you get 550 points a month. Save them for 2 months and you have 1100 points. Buy a powerset, and you have 300 points left. Next month, you get 550 more and have 850. Buy another powerset, and you've still got 50 points left
If you AREN'T T9, you get 400 points a month. Save for 2 months, and you get a free powerset.
It's rare that we get more than one powerset per two months, and if you average them out, I'm pretty sure that we get less than 2 powersets per 3 months. So as a T9, you ARE getting your powersets for free with your subscription, unless you're using those points for something else.
As an added bonus, any powerset you buy, you get to keep, even if you lapse to Premium, so that means that the powerset is yours until the servers are shut down.
The only reason I can think of that you "have" to buy extra points is that you erroneously think that your points will expire if unspent. That simply isn't the case - once you get points they remain on your account until you spend them (or the game is shut down). They never expire, and they stack wil no limit (or a ridiculously high one that they don't expect us to reach).
@Roderick
When paid-for-VIP powersets started coming out, I decided that, if my monthly vreem stipend wasn't enough to buy them, I'd cancel my subscription and never come back. This, fortunately, hasn't and doesn't look to be the case, and I generally come out a bit ahead each month anyway.
That said, while I've had time to accumulate the paid powersets as they came out, I can see how this would be an issue from the perspective of a new player. The projected message of being a Very Important Player is undercut by the fact that, at the start, their options are still limited. What if they want to create characters with various paid-for powersets? They'll either have to pay extra off the bat, or wait each month enough points to buy them and the prospect of that, if I were just coming to the game, would leave a pretty bitter taste in my mouth.
...compared to not being VIP at all and having to pay for things like ATs or market access >>
Really, this game offers -a lot- for its subscription fee.

Also, while they may not beable to play with the new shiney right away, waiting 1 - 2 months (likely 1 if they havent been wasting away their points on the obvious "will have to pay for" items) is still getting them more new sets to play with than we've gotten before.

I think what you'd see is that, over a course of seven years or so, you got Dual Blades, and Willpower, and Kheldian and SoA ATs, and probably one or two other things that I'm forgetting. Not counting stuff that you had to buy an expansion for, of course. Then in the last year we've had a bunch of free power sets and also a bunch of paid ones that you can mostly purchase with your monthly VIP stipend if you want. All in a single year. I mean, most people know this, but it'd be nice to have a chart or something to point people to when we get silly complaints like this one. |

In City of Heroes beta (yes, before the game launched), I wanted a punchy set for scrappers. The answer was "you've got Martial Arts". For seven+ years, I still wanted it. Eventually there were alternative animations for MA but it felt like alternative animations. Superstrength was available to tankers, but not scrappers, and superstrength was, well, super.
Come Freedom, and Street Justice was released. It feels punchy. It's a lot of fun. Because they could put a dollar figure on it, the economics of "hey, let's create it, even though there's some overlap with MA and SS but create a new type of fighting" was easier to justify.
And yes, I feel like a VIP, very much so.

In the past year we've had 10 new powersets released, 3 of which are free. So as VIPs our rate of free powersets hasn't gone down since freedom launched and because of the monthly stipend you can technically get most of the paid sets for "free" also.
Five powersets free is still more powersets in 11 months than what we got before.
And then I go back to the thought of, just because it's an option, would you play it? Does someone make and actually stay with every new character they make with a new powerset? |
If you DEMAND free access to new powersets as a VIP, check the beta. Then decide if you want to spend your stipend points on it.
If i'm honest, I don't think Paragon could've got the F2P more right.
When Freedom launched, I dumped a lot of money to get to T9 (I won't discuss how much). At the time, there was little reason to do so, except for more perks and Celestial armor.
Now though, un-subbing would lose me a lot of stuff.
I don't feel like a "VIP", being carried everywhere, offered free expensive drinks () but I definitely feel like i'm getting my money's worth. Which is a good enough feeling for me.
If you're not feeling "VIP", then maybe you've been taking the word "VIP" a bit too literally. Really, all that makes a VIP special is all the stuff that comes part of their subscription, which in the long run is likely cheaper than having to buy -every- new release.
I was doing some playthroughs of City of Heroes. Now they will serve as memories of a better time ...
So tempted to use this word in a meeting...or some sort of an official document.

What I don't get about these threads is why people seem to need to respond with complaints about "OP entitlement issues", thus bumping it and bringing it to more people's attention. But I got to use the "hooray big word usage" link, so it's all good.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

Does someone make and actually stay with every new character they make with a new powerset?

Ninja/Time Mastermind, Beam/Dark Corruptor, Street Justice/WP Brute, Dark/Dark Controller, Water/Nature Corruptor, Titan Weapon/Electric Brute, Kinetic/WP Scrapper, Staff/WP Scrapper, Beast/Pain Mastermind, Demon/Thermal Mastermind, Electric/Electric Dominator, and coming in i24 Fire/Martial Dominator and remaking my DP/Mental Blaster into DP/Martial.
... Yeah, I have a problem. ._.
I haven't had to pay for a "pay" set since Freedom launched. I've been able to buy the sets I want with the free points I've gotten. Didn't buy Beast Mastery because I haven't been a big fan of masterminds, but have bought Beam Rifle, Staff Fighting, Water Blast, Nature Affinity, and Street Justice, without having to spend a dime on the game. That's in addition to the free sets I've gotten over this time.
Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.

But now, those four sets I listed are FREE TO VIP's! So you're getting some free that you used to have to pay for on top of your subscription. And you don't feel VIP?
So, since that statement was pure BS, not gonna bother with the rest of the post. This is a classic 'entitlement' thread.
