I don't know exactly all the details of the pitch, but I suspect that it's a pretty detailed justification of how City of Heroes would round out their current holdings and help them branch into a new medium into which they haven't been particularly strong. And Disney is all about branching into new media, so I think it's actually a pretty good pitch.

Thanks for the support, I'm actually writing my letters now.
We may know it's different, but to Disney and Marvel will it look differently? More, when Iger asks the guys at Disney what they think of it, will the old lawsuit come up (lacking the details of why they lost)?

I've been positive on a lot of the attempts, but this... I don't see it. Pitching them is a Hail Mary. Calling for a massive mailing program without any hint of any interest seems like grasping at a straw that isn't there.

We just didn't get anything we wanted. Still, the cry went up: "We're beating NCSoft!"
I don't know anyone who said this meant we were beating NCSoft. But the pony in the pile of manure NCSoft shipped to us in that statement was that we HAD broken through the wall of indifference to get noticed, to the point where they made a statement hoping it would make us shut up. And yes, that's a small battle victory, it's clear by the lack of any NCSoft statement with the first announcement that they had no intention of saying anything to the community and just ignoring us, sure that we'd just go away.

And that gave hope to the thought that, now that we have their attention, we can push for something that does, after all, benefit NCSoft - sell the game. Unfortunately, either there wasn't enough attention or their natural pigheadedness couldn't be overcome.

I've got a lot of sympathy for that view. I think the original plan was there would be a lot of leveling through street sweeping (and early on, that was the case) - the non-content zones were great for that. But then missions got better bonuses and less debt, changes put in place to limit powerlevelling in street sweeping, and they fell through.

I would point out that they could have been revamped in the future. Early on, Rikti crash site would have led that list of places nobody goes, and DA would be on the list. The revamps there made them popular.

Faultline and the Hollows fell victim to it being so easy to get to level 25 - and being pains to get around didn't help either. I like the Faultline content, but usually wind up outlevelling it. (I'm happy to never have to go back to the Hollows.) If Faultline had been revamped as 25-35 content (and a tram brought into it) I think it would do better.

Oh and I have to stick up for Boomtown. Entering Boomtown for the first time is one of my two strong memories from beta. "Holy hell, there was a war fought here." I still would have loved to see it revamped as a zone with arcs.

Let's be honest. How many times have we seen an avatar run around with just the Eve Top
I've seen some highly sexualized player characters.

But even Desdemona, the most sexualized of the NPCs used in promotion of the game, is tame compared to the (admittedly) cherry-picked sexualized NPCs used to promote the game. And most of the promotion, over time, (where it could be found,) focused on the male characters and action.

So yes, it sure looks like Blade and Soul will be more sexualized than CoH ever was, at least in terms of storyline/NPCs you interact with.
  5. I might, because I love the game, but it would definitely be month by month to see what happened.

Some things that would increase my chance of staying, in increasing levels of importance:

    (1) Transparency. Why the shutdown, why no sale, why the reversal. And if they pretend to be transparent and it doesn't ring true, that's enough to get me to leave.

    (2) Transparency as to "what would make us pull the plug again". And again, honesty is first. If they said "From the feedback we've gotten, we think the game may have a chance, we'll give it another year. We'll need to see about a 10% growth in profits and player level at the end of the period from where it stood before the announcement", that might be a steep goal to reach, but at least it's something to know. If it's just "hi we're back", there's no reason to believe it won't be "hi we're gone" in six months.

    (3) Matt Miller and a significant portion of the other staff come back. That's both because I'd have confidence in their ability to move the game forward, and for them to come back to NCSoft would say they have enough confidence to give it another go.
  6. It's not just that CoH was pulling its own weight - but it was actively in development and most people were very excited about the next update. Would it have changed things? Who knows, but this was the answer to a lot of people's unhappiness and could have brought people in or at a minimum stopped/slow the very slow spiral people saw.

And the active development was part of the main difference between this and the other games - the surprise. There may have been hope on the part of Tabula Rasa players and devs and Auto Assault players and devs that they would be able to turn things around, but the mood was pretty negative. These were widely perceived as failed games. (And yes, I will say they should have been sold if anyone was looking to continue them, both as a sign of loyalty to the customers who had bought into the game and as a way of getting something, no matter how little, out of it.)

As I've said elsewhere, I've been involved with failing projects before, both on the inside and the outside. There's a process things go through, moves taken, increasingly drastic moves. Layoffs, projects delayed, rapid shifts in priorities, some attempt to save it. Most people on the outside can see doom falling, and everyone on the inside knows they're teetering on the edge. This came out of the blue. Shocking. Surprising. They were profitable but not profitable enough. They had membership retention unheard of for a game this old, but not good enough.

And that's why CoH's closing should make one more reluctant to invest in an NCSoft game in the future. Because this came with no warning. And it wasn't enough to be profitable and have happy customers, you have to reach some unknown level of success. Everything I'm reading says that GW2's numbers are below expectations. They sold a lot, but did they sell enough to reach some secret NCSoft goal to keep the axe from falling?

So to me, the argument isn't "NCSoft is a serial game killer". It's "NCSoft is a stalker, in hiding preparing to lash out with an assassin's strike". (Stalker in AT sense, not criminal sense)
  7. I know that as OP I have no control over the thread, but I'll still ask:

This thread was set up to discuss mistakes made in design and execution in the game. It really wasn't meant to be one more thread to endlessly discuss the shutdown and NCSoft and the Titan group and the SaveCoH movement and so on and so forth.

So, consider this a request, can that discussion be moved elsewhere?

As I said in the OP, it was up to each poster to decide whether they were expressing why they think the game failed or just things you love the game in spite of. It was partially a response to the statements of certain people "You think the game is perfect and anyone saying otherwise are haters", but also thought that a bit of honest "what wasn't great" would be a bit of a reality check on some of the "what you love" that did sometimes have somewhat rose colored glasses on.

Good for your employer. I've been on some projects at a previous company, where it was crunch time and things like documentation fell by the wayside. And yup, it came back to bite us later.

And remember, CoH went through a few iterations in beta. So that's the time you throw what you can to make them work. Later they got cut back to 8 people trying to do the job of a full team and putting out some big content, constantly under crunch time.

I'm not saying it's good, and once there was funding I think it would've been smarter to have a team on documenting the parts not clear. On the other hand, I know the temptation to always have people on stuff that makes money now.

So I'm just saying that ideally none of that would ever happen. But things aren't always ideal.

  11. Even if the license isn't transferable - given how fast Cryptic and PWE moved to quash the rumor that the shutdown was due to the license expiring, I don't think either company wants to be "the reason the deal fell through". So they'd presumably cut a licensing deal.

    Oh, I doubt that's a concern.

The concern is more - there are additional costs on the part of NCSoft to create and maintain that forum, a reason to not do the deal. And if they do add that form, how long does it stay up?

The problem is that does add a burden on the seller, it's not a simple "you give me the money, I give you the tapes and the deal is done" situation.
  15. I had fun with Beast Mastery (and it didn't hurt that I've had the name Happy Fluffy Puppy since launch of CoV looking for a concept). Was it the most powerful set? Probably not. But I've never been one to run at +4/8, even on my incarnates, and was reasonably effective.

With Freedom, it's in many ways simpler. What spots are filled in on the Paragon Reward Table, and what store items are owned by the player (or what temp powers/etc. does the player have)? From a game standpoint, if someone has 75 spots filled on the reward table, it doesn't matter if that was 75 months worth of subscription or all from points.

The trickier issue is what non-game info is provided. I don't think there'd be any problem with providing NCSoft Account name and password. Email is a little more sensitive, and wouldn't be completely necessary but would mean if you don't remember your password no way to recover.

In theory, to provide maximum privacy, something could be done with plaync.com where you log in and say "please send my info to the guys who bought CoH", would require some work plus how long does it stay (and what afterwards, are those accounts not claimed just lost).
  17. Here's my immediate list.

    (1) The handling of ED was abysmal. After being told that the changes to the powers was over, suddenly ED made powers far less able to be enhanced. I think that in the game today, with IOs in place, ED may have made the game better. But it came as a surprise after we thought it was done and the delay between ED and IOs was too long.

    (2) Old content not being updated. Over the years, the story-telling abilities have improved, both in techniques and the idea of what was fun. The old content is way too long, way too repetitive (why clear out one council base when you can clear out six?). The Positron TF was an incredibly unfun grindy TF that got broken into two fun shorter TFs. In the transition from Sister Psyche to Penny Yin, the TF got shorter and a better story. The other TFs needed at a minimum some trimming and ideally a redesign. And not just the TFs, the old arcs have some great stories locked in unfun gaming styles and could be improved greatly.

    (3) AE was handled badly. First, the farming aspect - if the devs were surprised it would become a power leveling money printing tool, they were about the only ones. But they were doing something new, I can give them a pass. What they did wrong about it was try to stop it, almost hysterically so it seemed, even killing badges that people would farm for. A smarter solution would have been to say "this is a great power leveling tool that people can use if they want to, we'll make some tweaks to keep it from being completely out of control, and we'll separate in the search the 'farming' arcs from the 'story'"

Worst, it was almost abandoned over time, the new ways of telling stories never made it into AE and allowing the forbidden name filter to be broken for so long is terrible.

    (4) I'm going to break my rule about being specific here, but talking about something general - there was way too much trying to force certain gameplay styles on the game. I'll say this got much better with the Freedom revamp, but still happened a bit. Examples: Bonuses so much better for teaming, fiddling with TFs so that everyone had to play the hold TF and kept minimum team sizes high, no solo incarnate path and then the solo incarnate path was held down.
  18. We've been accused of thinking the game is perfect and hate people who say otherwise. So OK, this is the place for your gripes about what happened with the game.

    Three rules. (OK, suggestions)

    (1) Be specific. Not "they lied", not "they love eviscerating characters", but specific things you think was wrong.

    (2) Focus on the act, not the people. No badmouthing the character of either CoH employees for implementing or other players who might support it.

    (3) If you want to challenge someone on why you think this was good for the game, do it, but again, keep it specific and keep it on the acts and the impact on the game.

Note: It's up to you if you think your complaints are "where CoH went wrong and why it's being shut down" or "where CoH went wrong but I love so much more".

If PvP is completely excluded from a project, there will be a lot of yelling and pleading by the playerbase to add it. This would, eventually, result in a PvP system that was tacked on after the fact, and would always feel tacked on.
I personally hate PVP, both because of some of the nerfs to the PVE powers that came from it, and my experiences in doing PVP have mostly been unpleasant. (Not just in this game, but other MMOs and even some social games.)

As I understand it, the biggest problem with PVP is the wide range of powers available to players (which is a big plus for PVE). You've got balancing problems, and if people figure out a combo that stymies others (combinations of control powers), it becomes a mandatory FOTM because you can't win otherwise. And a novice that just wants to see what it's like has no shot. So yes, if you're going to have PVP, it needs to be designed from the start.

But as a PVE player, if designing PVP in from the start means limiting PVE effectiveness, that doesn't make me happy. On my list of "what I need from a new game", the ability to completely ignore PVP is high on the list (no constant "you want to duel" popup boxes, no PVE content in PVP zones, PVE effectiveness isn't affected by PVP results).

The simple solution is to say "no PVP" - but there are a lot of players who love PVP so that's probably not the best solution. But in a game with as wide variety of powers and playstyles as CoH has, pleasing both camps would be a tough nut to crack.

There is ZERO change that Voldemort comes back. First, in that world, once dead, you stay dead. (Ghosts aren't really back, they're kind of echoes of the person that died.) Second, it would be like Lily Potter coming back, would mess with the whole story.
