  1. I also was busy w/ Halloween mayhem and couldn't make it, but I raise my virtual glass to you, 88s!

But it would have required much more extensive analysis and work to implement permanent, meaningful changes.

We did know who the richest players were. There was some research done into market behavior, but the tools to allow for the really cool analysis were built into issue 24.

And no index that we kept track of on a regular basis.
I would love to know who they were.

I'd love to know, at least if not, how much they had.

I suspected I was one of the richest at one point before marketeering became a big deal (because I had quite a few billions before anyone was really talking about having that much), but I'm curious if there was some quiet marketeer who may have had even more than the whales we know about...
  3. You can make a lot of money on the WoW auction house, but because it isn't double-blind like CoH, it tends to require a more concerted effort. I made ~700k gold during Cataclysm in about 10 minutes a day some days (and really I only bothered the first half of the expansion). I have a guildmate who has every profession on alts and, with a more concerted effort, has 4 million gold. (For comparison of pricing, the most expensive vanity mount you can straight up buy in-game was around 50k; for about 600k, you could get a top guild to carry you through all of the content of a tier and give you all the gear and the vanity mount off the last boss, etc.)

WoW's market fluctuates a lot more though - the people I know who made the most made it by buying up raw materials when they were cheap, and then usually did a ton of crafting and selling right as patches hit and demand spiked. (Because the major wow patches introduce new gear, and the gear replacement spikes demand for the consumables like enchants and gems through the roof.)

That's the only one I can comment on.
  4. Indeed, it's pretty epic. /clap
  5. This explains the person who seemed really mad I was buying up prestige.
  6. So, I'll tell the story of converters.

After TopDoc's post, I decided that since I didn't have a lot of liquid cash but I was certain he was right - that purples would crash and be far cheaper. I decided it was a shame you couldn't "short" in the CoH market.

In the real world, when you short a stock, you effectively "borrow" a share from someone, and sell it. You pay interest on the "loan" and have to return the share later, but if it declines in value, you can make money by repaying after buying it back for less.

Then I realize I could short the market. I had 6-8 toons with full purples, assembled casually playing since launch and even doing a bit of marketeering since release. That netted me probably an average of 500-600m per purple, and I plowed them into bids. At first I was getting them for 60-70m, but the supply continued to rise. Post-converters, I had so many merits and h-merits and a-merits and e-merits, I kept converting, and since they were still running 400m+ for a while, I was buying for as much as 200m and flipping them.

Anyhow, it ended well. 200+ pvp IOs, 600+ purples, and scores of LotG, Miracle, Numina, etc; and that's on top of all the stuff I re-slotted back into my toons I "shorted".

Anyhow, I took a few screenshots along the way just to sort of commemorate the madness: http://imgur.com/a/AXjdm#9

Since then I aggressively flipped purples, and I PvP farmed pretty heavily, 5-boxing in the NW corner of Siren's Call on Liberty. At first I was collecting L15s, but there was a limited market so I swapped to just doing 50s. At first I was crafting, and then I decided to just sell them. I was probably selling 20-30 a week or so lately, just dumping most for 85,000,001 (usually sold for 90). High value ones I'd bother listing, but almost all sold within a day.

Lately with the purple crash I started crafting the pvp IOs; thanks to a comment on here, I realized that you could actually make decent money if you crafted them and did little one-off converts just aiming for "not totally crap". Anyhow, it was going well.

I was also starting to attack niches:

    - L50 Red Fortunes (most of which I just crafted and flipped, but I also converted some in the defense set with 2 converters, to get LotGs)
    - Kinetic Combats (mostly dmg/rech; someone was opposing me well, so I ended up deciding to match their bid exactly so I could hide within their own buying, which appeared to work; they stopped raising their bid and I was getting a steady flow)
    - salvage flipping, which I'd never done; I was aggressively bidding on rares, usually batches of 100 so far across several toons. I did it on ones I played actively so I wouldn't be logging them in JUST to salvage

    Anyhow. Good times.
  7. So anyone who has read The Nine Billion Names of God will realize that Zenion basically caused the end of city of heroes. He assembled his full salvage collection... and the servers are winking out, one by one.
  8. Well, gents, this part of the game has frankly been my favorite for quite some time. I liked the other parts too, but jockeying for influence that had effectively become meaningless due to enough excess to purple and 3% every character slot on Virtue... that was grand times.

Anyhow, allow me to kick off the festivities with a grand bonfire... I burned like 100B. Which has purchased me the fine memory of being, at least briefly, on the top of the 88s prestige chart.

    It's been an honor.

We're at lunch now. I'll post more later but I am sharing your thoughts with the team.

If we still have forum access next week the writers and I will do an "ask us anything" about CoH lore. And we mean ANYTHING lore related. If we not know it we'll make it up on the spot.
If you don't, drop me an email (contact info in the oog contact thread), and I will get forums set up.

  11. I'll pre-pledge $1,000 (at minimum) to a kickstarter if there's any hope you can pull it off.

I'm also extremely technical (working as a technical director for an ISP, published a book last year, former staff engineer at VMware, etc), and could pitch in a bit of time if you need anything. (Very good with servers, devops, and can code in several languages, including C, and have experience with threading and the server side of client server code.)
  12. Unless you come up with some spectacular act of goodwill (maybe releasing the IP associated; code and art or such), I'll have to avoid your MMOs in the future. I think it would be a good thing to do for players who have invested thousands of dollars in your game, hoping to having a lasting experience. This is just because I don't think I can handle another shelving of a game like this.
  13. The change to form-changing to set it to 0s animation lockout was an A+ bro move on the part of the devs. It makes all the difference in the world to me; the play as a triformer is just so much -smoother- with that change. Not feeling penalized for form changing makes a form changer a million times more enjoyable.
  14. This is pretty fabulous. Well done.

The first time I noticed this, I did a rarity conversion on a Rare piece of Gaussian's Synchronized Fire Control (a mixed set), and got an IO from an all-yellow set.
Hmm. This may be a bug if so, possibly with the set. I never had this happen when I was testing, which I did a heck of a lot of, but I think I always started with 'real' 'rares'. I don't have the test server installed on my laptop, but I'll test this when I'm home in a week or so.
  16. I enjoyed this niche more just post-converters when I could buy at 111 and sell at 300-400 regularly

167 buy, 225 sale (and 225 sale is by no means guaranteed on quite a few purples at the moment), 5.5m salvage, 2.25 converters = ~13m per converter in profit after fees. I can do better.
  18. Purple prices have breached previous lows pretty hard. I think my average profit on a conversion flip is probably ~1/3 of what it was, and other niches may now be more profitable than purples.

What's funny is, this isn't hurting mez recipe prices. I lowered my bids in response to the falling dmg purple market, and even at -14m from my previous buy price, I've been 100% shut out for the past 16 hours. Granted, we're only getting into prime time, but that's pretty surprising.

Ah, yes. As I mention in the post, my command line version will only work if you are patched. The other night before I switched to using the command line version I had to hit "reopen->Don't reopen windows" like 100+ times before the launcher launched successfully. Do that until you can patch and then you can launch from the command line after that.

And yet I'm poor compared to MeanNVicious, who outspent the collective deep pockets of the 88s in an infl race... and is still a trillionaire, apparently. Which was a classic thread, since so much bravado across the Internet is just that, so seeing someone back it up is priceless.
  22. Updated my command line command to one that has a working auth server.

Did you do a post for this? Do you need like 20x characters with 50x 1B bids or such? I'm pretty sure even after burning ~110B or so on the 88s, I think I could still scrounge up 350-400B already if I went on a liquidation spree. Might be worth trying to join this club. (And I bet TopDoc could join if he were at all inclined... at one point he had >200B just in pvp recipes stocked up.)
