Discussion: Tier 9 VIP Reward - Celestial Armor Availability

As many of you have noticed, with issue 23, we'll be introducing a new Tier 9 VIP Reward - the Mecha Armor Costume Set. We hope you've got your tokens ready!

We wanted to make this clear - once the Mecha Armor goes live, the Celestial Armor will no longer be available as a VIP reward. Fear not, if you do miss out on the Celestial Armor, we'll eventually reintroduce it via another method at a later date.

How long is the mecha armor slated for residence?

NCSOFT may take away our servers and beloved dev team, but they can't break our spirit and community. with all your power, NCSOFT, your victory will be bitter-sweet. I, personally will be there to laugh at you when you face-plant into the ground.

While it's great that we're getting some heads up on this (as previously promised), I don't think that the thread title is particularly descriptive of what's going on. This technically isn't Mecha Armor news, but rather an important announcement regarding Celestial Armor. The title makes it out to be yet another Mecha Armor hype thread.

Something like "Heads up! Celestial Armor VIP Rewards Deprecating Soon!" would be far more informative.

Super Packs? Contest for a code that unlocks the costume set on your account? Anniversary rewards?

I suspect it would be one of the above.

Bought in the Market with Paragon Points is my bet. They're not gonna just give it away, unless it wasn't very popular during its run, which I'm guessing is not the case.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I am 14 months away from just reaching Tier 9, let alone getting anything there. And as much as I want to fund the studio, I just cannot afford to drop the money needed for the reward tokens. Knowing that these things will eventually be available to someone like me, who has to be content with his single monthly reward token, is wonderful. Much appreciated.

*Prays, probably in vain, the "alternative method" is not an exorbitant amount of any certain kind of merits...*

So basically you will rename the "T9 VIP" to "T9 VIP for sometime and then everyone can have it via another method"? Tell me, what's the point of having a "T9 VIP" again then?

Here's a suggestion: make "T9 VIP" go away, turn it into a "Revolving Tier" and let everyone have access to it, regardless of what tier they are actually on. This way you still get your points (money) and at least there's no pretence of creating VIP costume content only.

Zwillinger said they wont likely be in Super Packs as they cease being incentives to buy the packs if the suck... erm... paying customer already has the incentive item.

Just speculating, but it sounds to me like they want to take the Tier 9 VIP reward costumes and sell them on the market.

I'm okay with that.

As a Tier 9 VIP I get these costumes for free when they are released since I have no other use for the monthly tokens.

There are VIP's who want these costume sets but are years (or hundreds of dollars) away from having the tokens to buy them. And then there are the premium players who, if they remain "free", will never get it no matter how much they spend on points, since they aren't VIP to even have access to them.

Here's a suggestion:

When Celestial gets taken out with i23, put it in the market around the 1 year anniversary of the set being introduced. That would give VIP players an exclusive year head start with the costumes and PS can start making more money off of it for those players who want to pay for the set.

Sometimes 'First!' is its own reward in an MMO. By having a period of 'exclusivity' with the T9 items you make it desirable for certain personality types to spend money getting access to it before the masses have a crack at it. By the time the masses have a crack at it, those who care are on to the next collectible.

Business wise it makes sense.

That said while the warning on the non-beta forums is appreciated it still comes across as a sleazy sale pitch. Because no exact date of I23 release is included it reads like 'get it while you can, because while it will be back we're not sure how or when'.

Nice of you confirm what we already knew, what would actually be nice though is to have some sort of lead-time on when Issue 23 goes live beyond 12-24 hours before the patch downtime. I know that sort of thing isn't easy to predict but at least a ballpark. You don't even need to specify any length of time (since that's gonna get you into trouble when some weird bug inevitably pops up and delays things), just something like "if you want to purchase tokens up to Celestial, now would be a good time to do it". As it stands, people with a month or two to go (to fill Celestial slots, not to achieve T9 VIP) may or may not need to purchase extra points.

Having access to it months before anyone else?

Put it in the super packs. Putting the T9 VIP costume stuff up for sale straight out in the market seems like a lazy cop out, and devalues the VIP part to much. At least with super packs, its still random chance meaning it takes at least a little effort or dedication(because of the risk involved for your money vs just selecting it in the market).

Ideally, IMO, there would be some in game achivement needed to unlock it, like special mission arcs with a particular badge, at which point it would get unlocked in game at the tailor. But this method removes the potential for real money transaction so I just dont see it happening.

I think they should sell the pack in 3 bundles, 1 per reward token.
So, 1200 PP would be the price for the whole set.
Pieces cant be bought separately, but bundles can, so they give options without giving too much.
I think that would be fair.

Also I rather have something completely new for Super packs.

Tier 9 folks get it for months before anyone else and, considering we don't even know what the new method will actually be, we might just get it for free by staying subscribed, or not have to jump through a complicated hurdle just to get a chance at having them.

Plus T9 VIP also offers an extra 150 PP per month, and repeatable rewards.

All this.
I agree... Stop snobbery. This month I will be filling my last T8 and jump to T9.
But Im fine getting Celestial other ways for not so veteran players.

Please let the aura, wings, and weapons remain VIP T9 exclusive only and sell the rest on the market.

That sounds like the worst of both worlds: people who aren't t9 VIP in the appropriate timeframe still can't get pieces they want, and people who value the exclusivity still lose most of it.

I agree with Hopeling. Set should be available as a whole, not just pieces. You especially shouldn't hold back parts we're low on like weapons and back items.

IMHO, if not super packs, then events. The whole deal with vet rewards was that you have to keep playing to get them. That remaining true would alleviate a lot of the contradiction in giving them away to those who aren't T9.

Maybe give all devs a 0end toggle that when they are hit by a frisbee, fortune, or buff from a player that player gets Celestial unlocked. As more T9's rotate out, different devs could bring different toggle abilities for different sets to various events, or do an event with winners like hide-and-seek while running the toggles for multiple T9's... then only the few who found them would get a bunch unlocked all at once when they found them and cast something on them.

If not a toggle, then an aura maybe, something like that.

Personally I think they should wait 3-6 months after they stop being available as a Tier 9 VIP reward then just sell them straight on the market, like a normal costume set. No special events, or games of chance, or other hoops to jump through; just make it a normal purchase. Based on the duration it's been reward program exclusive so far that would mean the T9VIP gets to use the set for about a year before the peasantry, which seems like plenty of privilege to me.

(I say this as a Tier 9 VIP)

it will be $$$$ in form of PP, i forsee a big ad blitz, saying words that "Due to high and overwelming requests, we will for a limited time allow you to purchase the XXXX Tier items, but after such and such date,it is going back into our vaults for years"

kind of like Disney's movie ads, and of course they will only give you maybe 1 or 2 weeks at most, to get people to buy points, and purchase before time runs out.

my next question is how long before they go fully free to play, and are able to more money out of players?
