  2. Great penultimate raid last night. We switched things up a little bit by having a group split off and head the opposite direction around the ship to take down the pylons. The bombing phase went very smoothly (thank you all for not killing U'kon before all teams had set their bombs), as did the bowl phase. Kudos to those who were on taunting duty!

    Pinnacle, it has been an honor running these for you. Thanks for trusting me and the rest of the Talsorian Guard to lead you smoothly through these weekly raids, since I know I sort of just showed up a year ago and said, "Hey, we're hosting raids!" I have had an absolute blast, and I hope you have too. I am truly sorry it has to come to an end.

  3. I was hoping to have a full league to close out the Guard's anniversary weekend, but with 5 teams, it was close enough. A few of the phases were a bit helter-skelter, but all in all it seemed to go well enough! Thanks to all those who attended, and who made an appearance at the other events over the weekend.

    And now, we only have TWO Sunday Ship Raids left! Make sure to get your fix in now before you can't any more!

  4. It was a great weekend. We did not get quite the turnout we were hoping for, but then again, people are slowly moving on and I get that. So for those of you that showed up for the Winter event on Friday, the Maria Jenkins Arc on Saturday, and the Nostalgia mission and Ship Raid on Sunday: Thank you. I am glad we got to celebrate 1 year on the Pinnacle server. I only wish we could look forward to more.

    Below are a few screen shots I took prior to the ship raid. They aren't great, but I tried to get everyone at least once. If anyone would like the original files, feel free to PM me with an email address (and which pic you want) and I'll be happy to send them!

    Which is another way of asking too much money. NCSoft may have never published a price for which, if offered, they would be willing to sell the IP, but let's be realistic: in the corporate world, there is always the right price. Since NCSoft turned down all offers, it can be inferred that they did not see any offers they liked.


    In response to the OP: I am with some other up-thread. I have given up in the sense that I have accepted that NCSoft is completely unwilling to compromise, which in turn means that the game is done.

    Though, I wouldn't say that's a matter of the detail, as there have been players like that in every MMO. From the lowest detail to the highest detail. Truth is, that type of player would think that way no matter the detail in the MMO. CoH, a much older and less detailed MMO, proved that every day.

    What I hope, is that people actually keep to the genre of B&S. One thing that annoyed me was genre breaking in CoH. Not only that, they broke the genre they put in CoH *glares at the Vampire: the Masquerade guilds* "FIRE! DAYLIGHT! These killed vampires in V:tM!"
    "Genre breaking" in a superhero-genre-inspired game is nearly impossible. You can look at DC and Marvel and you will find heroes and/or villains from a multitude of different backgrounds. Hell, just take a look at Steel Canyon and Croatoa: with the exception of the use of the same building models, the two zones could conceivably be from different games. It's why we can fight enemies like Circle of Thorns or Banished Pantheon, then turn around and fight The Council or Crey. It's why an Amazonian, a Kryptonian, a Martian, and a few humans can all fight together.

    It will be hard to break the genre of Blade and Soul since the genre is much more specific. For example: even if we wanted to create a character like Positron in Blade and Soul, I doubt there will be the costuming/power options to do so.

    I agree with you on how to view the character creation sliders. More customization is always good, and as this is the gaming industry there will always be those players who will make the most grotesquely sexual character possible.


    All of that having been said, it is what Blade and Soul offers outside their creator (sort of NSFW) that makes it look like there is an obviously taunted sex appeal. City of Heroes females definitely have a hip sway in their walk, and I won't argue the degree of accuracy that sway holds to the average woman walking in heals (most of the female shoes in CoH have an elevated heal). However, I can honestly say without bias that I have seen real women walk in heals with movements resembling that of the CoH female Walk, while I have never seen any woman move through the world like the woman in that Blade and Soul video. The closest approximation I can think of would be a female model on a fashion runway, which typically is meant to exude some sort of physical attractiveness.
  7. Prototype is the only one I have played (haven't tried Prototype 2) that fits that description. The range of powers, and their potency, resulted in a very fun experience (gliding, no falling damage, sling-shotting yourself onto helicopters, parkour movement reacting automatically to your surroundings as you travel, etc.). I eventually got bored of it because, like most games, it is very singular in its threats. But for the time I played it, it was GREAT fun.

    The Assassin's Creed series has provided a "super" experience as well, in my opinion, just a drastically different kind. Prototype provides a Superman sensation: "I'm nearly invincible, with an arsenal of inherent abilities." AC reminds me more of Batman: "I will sneak around you, steal your secrets, and you will know I am there only if I want you to."

  9. I am sorry I could not be there last night for the ship raid, but it sounds like there was a decent number of people there, and that it went off without a hitch. Very glad to hear it.

    Here we are, ONE YEAR after we started hosting these ship raids on a weekly basis. I am somewhat in disbelief, it does not seem like that long ago. But it is, and what a ride it has been. I am sorry that this will be one of our last, but at the same time, I am glad that we at least get to celebrate an anniversary with you all.

    I hope you'll join us for it so that we can make it a full league, and show up for some of the other events of the weekend as well!

And because you, the players of Pinnacle server, accepted the group so openly as your weekly ship raid leaders, we want to invite you to attend the weekend festivities with us.

    EVENT DETAILS

    Winter Storm - Since the Winter Event will be active this weekend, we are taking advantage of it! We will form a few teams, farm a zone for the Winter Horde, and then take down the Winter Lord when he spawns. Next, we'll head to Pocket D to talk to Father Time and figure out where Lady Winter is causing mischief and we'll take her out too. Finally, we'll form a league and head to the Winter Realm to knock Lord Winter and his Guardians on their frigid snowy backsides! MEET IN: STEEL CANYON.

    An Afternoon with Maria - One of the most classic and well-known arcs in the game is that of Maria Jenkins, because it takes the player through nearly all of the Praetorian archvillains. We'd like to do it one last time, all in an afternoon! We will run as many teams as needed to handle the number of people that show up. MEET IN: OUROBOROS.

    Talsorian Scavenger Hunt - We, the members of the Talsorian Guard, will hide ourselves throughout the city, and you have to find us! We will publish a starting point, where you'll find one of our members waiting for you. From him/her, you will receive a piece of common salvage, and a clue as to the location of the next Talsor you will have to find. Once you have found Talsor #2, you will turn in the salvage in exchange for a new piece of salvage and the next clue. So on and so forth, until you reach the last Talsor (probably about 5 or 6 total), where you'll receive your prize. [EDIT] There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, with a consolation INF prize for anyone who finishes. Players are welcome to participate as individuals or on teams of up to 8 players, however teams will be treated as "1 player" and therefore will receive one prize to be divided as seen fit by the members of the team. The first clue will only be available from 2pm to 2:30pm CST.[/EDIT] STARTING POINT: TALSOR VOX, BRIEFING/LECTURE ROOM, VANGUARD BASE, RIKTI WAR ZONE.


    If things happen and enough Talsors are unable to make the scavenger hunt event, we will be hosting the below event instead:

    A Trip Down Memory Lane - We invite you for a few hours of nostalgia. Bring your first and/or favorite, character, and recreate their first costume as closely as possible. Then we'll head to Ouroboros and run some of the favorite classic arcs (like Frostfire for example), recreating the days that first hooked you on City of Heroes.

    Finally, for the ship raid on the 11th, we ask that everyone show up to Point Du Hoc a full 15 minutes before invites are set to begin. If you would indulge us, we would like to get a couple screenshots of the full league doing the military salute emote before the raid begins.

  12. Great run last night, Pinnacle! We had 5 teams, nearly full, and it was a very tight group (no mass wipe outs). I saw plenty of leveling going on as well, so I am glad that a bunch of lowbies got something out of it. Good showing! I look forward to the 4 more that we have left.

    However, I will not be there this week (November 4th) since I will be out of town. One of the other members will cover though.

  13. The first 6-team raid league in WEEKS! That felt so great. Thanks for showing up, Pinnacle. It was a very smooth run, and seeing that many players out there was spectacular. I am sure 2xp weekend is to blame, but I am not complaining. And due to 2xp weekend, I heard leveling noises constantly. I know we got a level 6 to level 23, and a level 40 to level 43.6. That's pretty impressive.

    Thanks for attending, Pinnacle! We only have FIVE MORE of these, and I intend to make them count

  18. I apologize for my absence this past week. The girlfriend decided to surprise me by coming into town unannounced, which was great! It just meant that I had short notice to find someone to step up. But I hear Stellarum and Warmech ran a smooth raid with 4 teams. Very glad to hear it! I am glad we are still able to have a league to run these. Numbers seem to be decreasing (understandably) but still, it is nice that we that remain are still having a good time.

  19. I don't see this posted here yet, so I apologize if I have been scooped. But I figured some people might want to read TonyV's response to NCSoft's Oct. 2nd public statement. It is quoted below:

If NCsoft does not wish for City of Heroes to be part of its portfolio going forward for whatever reasons, then I will respect that decision.

    However, I continue to strongly feel that NCsoft is not seriously considering the option of allowing the City of Heroes intellectual property and code to be acquired by a third party. To be blunt, I do not understand how NCsoft can honestly claim that it has "exhausted all options." As long as NCsoft owns the City of Heroes property, it always has the option of allowing it to be sold. The only way that all options could possibly be exhausted is for a contract to be signed and the property transferred, at which time NCsoft would no longer have any say in the matter.

    Perhaps the statement meant to say that NCsoft has exhausted all options it finds reasonable. If so, then I still disagree. While I do not know the details of negotiations that have been occurring between NCsoft and former members of Paragon Studios and/or other game publishers, I am aware that they have been taking place. I find it impossible to believe that these studios and publishers have not been able to offer any reasonable offer for the property. Also, I have reached out to NCsoft multiple times in an attempt to discuss the situation myself, to hopefully either make an offer on behalf of the game's players or, at the very least, to inform NCsoft of factors that need to be considered in negotiations with other studios. With the exception of the legal department providing an e-mail address for players to express their thoughts to NCsoft, I have received no response to my communications. If this is the case, then I strongly feel that NCsoft needs to seriously consider whether what it finds reasonable is, in fact, reasonable.

    So I hope you understand that when I read that NCsoft feels that it has exhausted all options for keeping City of Heroes active, I find that statement disingenuous at best.

    I feel that NCsoft is still looking at this issue as a question of, "What reasons do we have to sell City of Heroes?" In my communications I have offered several, including the obvious answers of providing revenue for other projects and the positive public relations that would come from a game publisher working with a community to achieve something almost unprecedented in the industry: keeping a game alive even after its publisher feels that it is no longer part of its long term plans. Maybe NCsoft feels that it has exhausted all options in coming up with answers to that question.

    However, I think that an even more important question is: What reasons does NCsoft have to not sell City of Heroes? Because this is the question that really has me scratching my head. Are there legal issues? Of course, but are they insurmountable? Obviously not, as proven by the fact that NCsoft itself acquired complete ownership of the game in 2007 from Cryptic Studios. Is NCsoft afraid that City of Heroes will become a competitor with the company's other titles? Then hedge your risk by retaining an ownership stake in the title with no investment obligation. If it performs well, everyone wins; if it does not, NCsoft has not lost anything.

    Are there other issues that are preventing the sale? If so, then tell us, and together we can figure out some way to work around it or compromise on a solution. I currently work for one of the largest IT companies in the world, and my full time is dedicated to a client who is also one of the largest manufacturing companies in the world. In my experience, there is no such thing as exhausting all possibilities in the business world. When a company wants or needs something to happen, it happens. When a company says that it has exhausted all possibilities, that means that it did not want or need it badly enough to continue trying. To me, our current status is simply that we have not yet convinced NCsoft well enough that it wants to sell City of Heroes.

    What I think that NCsoft is not realizing (or possibly grossly underestimating) is that we as a community have a lot more at stake in the game at this point than NCsoft. The reasons we need NCsoft to continue working to allow the game to be sold are much more compelling. I could write for pages about the time and creative energy (and in some cases, much, much more) people have invested in the game, and as individuals, I know how important that is. However, in this response, I will address something that might be more compelling: money. NCsoft has invested money into City of Heroes, but the fact is, so have we. In fact, we have invested more money into City of Heroes than NCsoft has, as evidenced by the fact that the game was earning a profit. We have more than paid back NCsoft in revenue, and until August 31, were willing to continue doing so.

    At this point, I feel that I have to point out that this profit from City of Heroes is part of what has made NCsoft's other titles such as Aion and Guild Wars 2 possible by funding their development. Hopefully you can understand the anger and disappointment we felt when a mere three days after Guild Wars 2 launched--a game that our money funded--NCsoft in essence kicked us to the curb and has now repeatedly denied us the basic dignity of continuing to exist as a community. While the money we have invested may not give us any legal standing from an ownership perspective, I believe that it does put an ethical onus on NCsoft to do whatever it can to allow the game to remain active.

    So I want to make this clear: We have not yet exhausted all of our possibilities. To date, I have tried my best to be as deferential as I could to NCsoft in the spirit of staying helpful and productive to the negotiation process. I have worked hard and with utter sincerity to convince NCsoft that allowing the game to be sold is a smart business decision, as I am convinced that it is. However, it seems that these efforts have failed to make a meaningful impact, and NCsoft is apparently unswayed by our appeals to allow the game to be sold.

    At this point, I intend to continue increasing pressure on NCsoft to further convince them that they should want to sell City of Heroes. Starting now, I am going to step up our media efforts, including reaching out to mainstream media outlets to further explore the issues of people pouring time and creative energy into gaming services that can be shut down at any time, even when they are making a profit. I will also be reaching out to Asian media, particularly in Seoul, so that they stop thinking of this as just a problem "over there" and so that we can reach people in their own back yard. I am going to be increasing our publicity efforts, including mobilizing the community to show up at events such as comic and gaming conventions to get the word out further of what is happening to communities that share a common interest. I am going to start a campaign of informing NCsoft's customers via avenues such as game review sites and media that NCsoft seems to have become a company that is willing to needlessly kill off gaming communities. I am going to be performing in-depth financial research into NCsoft to try to answer some of my own personal questions, such as why it is willing to shut down a profitable game, lay off 80+ employees, and kill one of its most active communities to reallocate resources towards... what, exactly? I am going to be reaching out directly to NCsoft investors to ask if this is really the direction that they want the company to be headed in, in the hopes that if NCsoft management cannot be persuaded, the people paying their paychecks and allowing them to run the company can.

    I also want to be crystal clear that these are not threats. I have always said and will continue to say that I will be intolerant of any illegal activities, including activities intended to physically intimidate anyone or deny service to resources such as game servers. However, I feel that we are well within our rights to express vocally and loudly that NCsoft has not exhausted all of its options. This has always been and continues to be simply a matter of willingness to engage in good faith negotiations, and I intend to do my best to make NCsoft reconsider the question of why they are not allowing the game to be sold. While I appreciate the sentiments expressed of how proud NCsoft is of City of Heroes and how special a place it has in NCsoft's heart, we need more than sentiments. I have given my e-mail address and telephone number to NCsoft; they have demonstrated that they know how to reach me. So please, let's stop with the sentiments and figure out a plan for how together we will be able to keep the game going in such a way that we all benefit.

  22. I used to daydream about ways in which I could be a protector of the city in which I live: anything from a full-blown flying superhero to a far more practical/realistic whip-using, smoke-and-mirrors utilizing rooftop patrol, stopping muggings and minor disturbances.

    Now I find myself daydreaming about what powers/skills I would need to sabotage the reputation of NCSoft as a company (i.e. screwing with the servers of their other games, sending out false information directly from their offices without being caught, etc.). I hate it, but I can't help thinking about it.

    Congrats NCSoft. You've turned this Hero into a Vigilante.

  25. Man, I have to apologize to anyone I ever judged for nit-picking tiny game-related details on these forums. To you I say: I am sorry. After reading through some of the exchanges taking place on that article, I now see that you at least had a focus and a goal toward which you were working. There, I see one faceless person trying to sway the opinion of another faceless person about a video game, and the way in which a faceless corporation is closing down said video game. Oh, and all of that is taking place on the open internet...

    I mean, the dictionary definition of "insanity" needs to be updated with that description!


    But I digress. I appreciate Massively's continued coverage of our game's predicament, and I don't fault them for covering all of the MMO market since that is their job. I can only hope that, through this coverage, the gaming community is made better aware of NCSoft's M.O.
