Informal Art Poll

If you're looking for the best way to serve the game as a whole and new players in particular, I think you should reconsider a costume creator menu reorganization/submenu upgrade. Neither new nor old players are being served by menu lists that are far too long (i.e. chest details, face detail 1). The CC is the first thing new players see. It should be organized and easily navigated, and currently it's not, at least not everywhere.

I don't think it needs a complete overhaul, but honestly, where it needs work, it needs it badly.

I think once Noble Savage clears up what exactly he means by option 1 (made much easier now thanks to EmperorSteele's example) then it may or may not change the voting.

So I have two overarching philosophies when it comes to the Art Direction in COH: first, that we continue to improve the quality bar with every new initiative we undertake and second, that we not forget about the legacy art as this happens. But when it comes to legacy art, there are of course items in the Costume Creator that are starting to show their age. We could hypothetically remake these assets with crisper, more detailed textures and modern shaders and do our best to maintain the 'flavor' and 'feel' of the originals, with the goal of giving you the same stuff, only better.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But then there's a choice on how to deploy them, and that's where this very informal poll comes in: How would you, the players, want to approach this issue?

HYPOTHETICAL OPTION 1: Old assets would be removed from the Costume Creator menu and you'd have the newer, updated ones instead.

Pro: This raises the overall quality bar of the game by eliminating the oldest, least-attractive pieces; players look cooler; everything looks more consistent and modern. Less menu clutter.
Con: change is scary; perhaps some players will prefer the old pieces?

HYPOTHETICAL OPTION 2: We leave the old version alone and put the new version immediately below it in the Costume Creator.

Pro: Nothing is 'taken away.'
Con: Outmoded art remains, clashes progressively more with newer, modern assets. Menus swell with 2 options for each basic piece, making it harder to navigate.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So you can see where I stand on this. Personally, I'd like to see the game's art evolve, improve, and remain consistent, so I much prefer Option 1. But as always, I'd be interested to hear what you guys think about this. Do me a favor and please keep your posts short and to the point.

Possible grist for the mill:
--non-animated tails were left in Costume Creator when Animated Tails were added. Do any of you use the non-moving ones at this point?

Since the new practice is to make us pay for everything...even stuff we used to get as part of free issues, such as emotes, please do not remove the old pieces.

Here's what will happen if you remove them:
- You make 5 new pieces.
- You remove 5 old pieces.
- Management decides the 5 new pieces are pretty nice and that we should pay 9.99 for them.
-Now we're stuck with 5 less pieces unless we buy a new booster pack.

Since we aren't getting anything new for our $15/Month, please don't take away the stuff we've already got.

Seems to me you're putting words in people's mouths that have nothing to do with the content of what they are saying. So...

That's just bunk.
Nice straw man, though.

I think the old stuff doesn't represent the game well. I think much of it is aesthetically unpleasant. I think that the technical hurdles that would have to be overcome to give us everything and a bag of chips are outside David's control, but that updating the textures are within his (and his team's) control. I think that I'd rather have more textures and trust that if an object becomes functionally different through the addition of textures, David is aware enough of how attached people are to their characters' looks to not just blithely rubber-stamp it through to QA regardless.

Because that's totally what happened with the shinies in Ultra Mode. They didn't change any pieces that people were attached to, and blithely rubber-stamp it through QA. They made the responsible decision of keeping both options for things like the Metallic skin, the Vanguard and Valkyrie costume models.

. . . .

Ya follow me?

Hey, guys. Just wanted to thank everyone for casting a vote and for helping us get a better picture of what the playerbase is thinking. Here's my takeaway from reading the 22+ pages of thoughts on the topic: Arguments on both sides were compelling to the point where a third option, perhaps involving the menu setup, seems like the best way to satisfy all parties. This is NOT a promise of future action, but it's the view I'll express on your behalf.

So yay--everyone wins. We'll make every effort to create new pieces that give you all better options in areas that might be lacking. And don't worry, Option 2 folks--nothing will be removed from the system.

If anyone would like to comment further about specific costume pieces, please don't hesitate to post in the All Things Art thread.

Cheers,
Noble Savage

If true, that means my faith in the art team (or rather you, David, specifically) isn't misplaced.

its refreshing and nice to feel not only that the Dev team asked our opinions, but even listened to us and didn't just roll with the majority. So thank you very much David.

I say option 1: WITH the understanding that you create very similar to the old designs for the new and double the choices and varations of them. This way you give very little justification(or none) to keep the old.

Though I question the effort to do that when it would seem more prudent to simply make a new game on a new engine that gives all that and more instead and within the same IP(ie a true CoX 2). Granted thats even more work but allocating resources to slap on new things to an older set up just means its still an old set, just with new paint. Just seems there's so much inflexibility becoming more painfully obvious.

Since Noble Savage is CoX art lead, our game is growing a lot in the art and costume section. Costumes look better than ever.
I got hopes in him.

Now, THAT's what I'm talking about.

Please look into the menu setup so that it both helps to clear the current clutter and is flexible enough to handle any future changes to costume design; like Aura separation, Chest Detail vs. Chest Pattern separations, additions to sub-menu items/variants, or even the suggested costume upgrading, etc.

Heck, if possible, I would go as far as to say see if a player modifiable menu could be done (with a default/reset button of course) so players can set up the costume creator in a manner that best fits their individual needs (a walk-in closet of sorts)

Please strive to leave in (optional) low-demand graphics (when possible) for those already struggling to keep up with the fast pace of visual upgrades.

Please strive to keep adding upgrades for those who can get the most out of it.

Please keep as many options available to the players as possible (in all aspects); this is what separates CoX from most MMOs... near infinite possiblilites.

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

So what was even the point of asking if you're just going to go against your original idea and cave in to the minority? "How dare you make my character look better!" I think having outdated textures sitting next to the new upgraded ones is just going to bloat the menu ridiculously.

What would be the point of him asking if his mind was already made up? I, for one, am glad that they took a 'for show' situation and turned into what it should have been in the first place; an open, honest and objective platform for player input (unlike what happened with the Party Pack). Otherwise, do what you need to do and approach the players in a "this is what we're gonna do-no questions asked" fashion. IMO

So, totally ignoring the fact that an Option 3, i.e. a menu overhaul which is much needed, is now being considered.
Clearly your opinion is more valid than other peoples.
