I'm going to throw my weight behind the idea of the muscular female models, just as I did in the last thread. I'd also like to side with Xanatos and see more golden and silver aged superhero bits.
More tights, tight patterns, masks, higher rez models for all of the 'basic' hero parts that came out when the creator did . . .
And I'd also throw a vote in for a hairstyle something like Reed Richards, and several other notable male characters, with one main colour, and then another at the sides, so it can be used as a 'salt and pepper' look, or for more mature, aging characters. -
This, too. Could perhaps be done either as a back option like capes, but leaving the cape invisible.
As for the IDF costume set, while I did like it and find it useful for other types of characters, it hasn't gotten any play on my golden/silver age characters. To me it looks too much like padded armour, or something that Iron Man might wear underneath his metal suit. -
While not excusing the crappy delivery system they've cooked up, I'll point out that my Vet rewards were consistently late too, and I almost always had to file a ticket in order to get rewarded them at all. Its not an entirely new problem, though it does seem much worse now.

Quote:You guys are talking about a lot of different sets here. When I hear "Golden/Silver Age Comics," I think of super-heroes (jungle girls, for example, would be an entirely different genre--but a fun one!). If we're talking strictly about super-hero costumes, as I see it there are 3 possible ways to expand on the category:
A) revamped old school/spandex tights similar to the ones we already have (adding a few details like seams but still mostly plain)
B) modern tights (w/ ribbing, surface texture(s), subdivided surfaces) a la Ultimates 1 or Marvel movies
C) pieces we just haven't made before (e.g. domino mask)
What are you guys most interested in?
I'd prefer B and C. Though if you go with B, I'd ask that you not make things overly complicated still - a little texture and ribbing and such is great. A lot of it is too far, though. -
I didn't think of it at the time, but as long as we're throwing in hairstyles, too . . .
I would like to see something like Reed Richards, or the Kingdom Come version of Superman for the men. One of those hairstyles that screams (or politely interjects?) 'responsible adult' instead of punk rocker, emo kid, or scenester. While I've nothing against those styles, we've gotten a lot of them lately. Not all heroes are supposed to be in their teens/early twenties, after all. -
This is something I've wanted more of for quite a while.
I think what some people are saying about textures is correct. Things like the texture on the more recent cinematic Superman suits, or even the Spiderman suits. Things that add texture to the tights, but not actual patterns per se; like the recent CoT costume pack. It was great that it had texture! . . . But those spike patterns make it pretty unusable as a base for a Silver Age costume, in general.
Alternately, some higher-res tights in general would be nice, since the base ones we use are noticeably low-res.
Along with this, perhaps a sash belt (think Captain Marvel), some masks that have white eyes rather than eyes holes (Green Lantern), some new cape patterns that are maybe more subtle and less complicated/complex, the ability to put chest symbols on a cape, or on shoulder pads . . .
In general I would really like some classic, simple, well-defined superhero costume pieces. And while we do already have a lot of pieces like that, they're all very old, and very low-res, and a lot of them have chunky/blocky models (as regards shoulders, gloves, and boots) that were fine at the time they were released, but just look bad now.
EDIT: Aw yes, and as Electric-Knight mentioned, perhaps a cape that collects at the shoulders a bit. Overall though, I think the idea - for me, at least - is simple, high-res, good looking pieces that express the iconic simplicity of golden and silver age costumes. -
After seeing Zwill's response in the other thread going on about this - for those who missed it, he says there will be more gender neutral options for females in the future, as well as two versions of any costume piece they choose to pre-tint - I changed my mind. I went ahead and bought the one thing from this pack that appeals to me in any way.
The 20 point cigarillo. -
I'll pass. I usually buy every costume piece that comes out, but I've had enough of pre-tinting and the really awful choices being made as regards female costume pieces. As others have said, it seems like a lot of missed opportunity here, too. Unfortunate.

Quote:Uh?I can already see the pimp on virtue with a horde of fembots/strippers doing various /em dance as part of their own ERP fantasy LOL!
I am all for variations created by the Devs for each set of the mm category.
Attacking the devs and stating they don't know how to do it is laughable at best...they know how to do it but it is a decision of time versus cost. If it costs x amount of hours for pre-created dev choices for MM and 10x for player based costuming.. I will definitely go with the dev created ones.
HINT: Attacking the intelligence/capabilities of the Dev team doesn't make people think you are smart... quite the opposite actually.
It wasn't an attack. At all. Lots of people don't know how to do a great number of things, and I'm not attacking anyone by saying that. The Devs themselves often admit to the inability to make the game/engine do certain things, or to the immense difficulty in working with it. In short? Some things are hard. And anyone who finds that insulting is being too sensitive.
Seriously. Drama it down a notch, there. -
I guess I just don't like the idea that the Developers are so terrified of a few players using such character options in ways that they don't approve of, that they affectively lock out the entire idea of MM customization. As has been said, there are already a lot of superhero strippers and worse out there . . . . and yet? Remarkably, the world continues to turn, and powersets and costumes continue to be used for other purposes.
I don't know. Part of me is beginning to suspect that they jsut don't know how to make it happen, and the above is simply their excuse du jour. -
Quote:Someone asked that question at the Pummit and I think it was Second Measure who answered that considering the number of crime fighting strippers we already have running around, the Devs are kinda nervous allowing us to fully customize our minions and end up with hordes of crime fighting strippers.
Does, uh . . . does anyone else feel like that answer is kind of a cop-out? And not just for the obvious reasons, but also to hear that they don't want "crime fighting strippers" from the same development team that consistently brings us costume packs full of high heels, leather corsets, and high-res cleavage? -
I don't know about special rewards, but I wouldn't mind having some random EBs pop up in missions, either. Could be fun, especially with them being optional.

Is there a set time for this to begin on Saturday?

Unless I'm mistaken, and something changed while I wasn't looking, you have to have VIP status to join an SG, actually. People aren't trying to exploit you for your potential earning power - well, I guess they might be - but those are just the rules of the game as it stands now.
Sorry that you've had some rotten teaming experiences so far. Things will calm down in due time, but a lot of people are in a bad mood over this 'free players' thing, and thus want to blame all the game's ills on it. It'll pass. -
I'm hoping - having asked for this idea myself, several times - that this will be available in the new store setup at some point. (Okay, I'm hoping that it's there at launch as a nice surprise, but I'm an optimist.)

For me the coolest looking characters are some of the villains.
I really like the design of Lord Recluse, for one. At a glance you can tell a lot about him - that he's evil, that he's brilliant, and that he's powerful. His armor isn't overstated, he fits (and in fact embodies) a theme, but still feels dynamic.
My second favourite is Captain Mako, another character that you could identify just from his name. Though is design is simple, every bit of it communicates something of the character. He looks lean, hungry, malevolent, and half-crazed, which fits his characterization rather well.
And to pick a hero to round out the triumvirate, I'm going to go with what is probably not a very popular choice. Statesman.
He's iconic, classic, vintage superhero material. Plus the unique mantle of his cape, and the faceplate that he wears give him an ancient Greek feeling that ties in very well to his origins, and to themes that run throughout the stories in CoH, and even CoV. In short: classic, but not generic.
Oh! Now that I think on it, I have to say I love the redesign of Emperor Cole, too. It's again a case of his personality showing through in how he looks. -
Quote:The pack was mentioned already - it's something you have to pay extra for. The Spring Fling is the same event it's been for many years now, if I'm not mistaken - no development there. The '7 Years' stuff is mostly just unlocking Vanguard bits, and one emote. You mean like the Animal Pack release they've already snuck out. Or the Spring Fling event? Or the 7 Years of Super rewards?
While I understand what you're saying, I also see the spirit of the original comment. Mission arcs, costume bits that don't cost extra, or just something new that isn't related to Incarnates would be neat. -
Quote:Hello, first time here. I bought the Collector's Edition of City of Heroes a few years back, with the intention of installing and trying the game. Well, the box went on the shelf, and I got busy with other things and never got around to using it.
I am curious to try the game now....and just registered tonight for a game account as I see there is a 7 day free trial.
I would like to know if the activation code in this retail box will still work, and if I would still get the 30 day use of the game? Is there a better way to install the game ie from the disk I have and then I imagine there will be quite a few updates....or just download it and not bother with the disc?
Thanks in advance!
Steve
The best way to do the install would be to go from the disk, and then let it update. There will be a lot to download and it'll take some time. If you start from scratch you'll have to download even more though, since you'll have to download all of the bits that you could install off of the disk as well.
As to the game activation code . . . It should work. Each code is unique and if that one has never been used before then there's no reason it shouldn't, thirty days of free time and all. -
Agreed. While some of the newer animations are really neat, I find them (specifically Ninja Run and Dual Pistols) to be incredibly specialized in concept toward a certain theme, and it doesn't transfer well to other themes. I love the Ninja Run power, but what is so obviously an animation taken from animé looks, I find, quite silly on most of my more Western superhero themed characters.

When I'm looking for purples I usually run the wall in Cimerora. I can't say for certain if its the most effective way or not, all I can say is that it has worked for me. Could just be a case of 'random is random' but I usually get a purple drop within an hour and a half.

Quote:I would like more content to bases but I'm against too big favours to large SG's. Most of SG's are small and so is mine. There is already too many things that practically needs big SG's.
I think an overall boost to the functionality of all SGs would be a lot better than a boost to only the biggest SGs, as well.
Not to mention that the chances of the Devs designing content only meant to be seen by SGs with extremely high player-counts is very, very, unlikely.
. . . In fact, I think Devs doing anything at all for SGs is unlikely at this point, but the greater amount of people that would be able to do the content, the more likely we are to get it, I believe. -
Quote:The amount of IC versus OOC really varies hugely by what group you get involved in. Some groups are light-RP and have a lot of OOC chatter, and some groups are Heavy-RP and discourage that kind of thing, or ask you to move it to a seperate, specifically OOC channel. The one convention that I think most agree on is that OOC chatter is kept within parenthesis, so if you see chat surrounded by brackets, double brackets, or squared brackets, that means its OOC.First off a small introduction. I am a returning a player, formerly of the Triumph server. Most know me as either Blazefire or Frith Ra (my two dominate characters). I've been a roleplayer for many years but mostly in smaller communities and games such as Neverwinter Nights. Previous RP experience in MMOs has been less than stellar, in fact most times it was just plain chaotic, but I'm thinking I might be willing to give it one last try here in CoX.
I'm wondering how the player base of Virtue makes RP work. How much is IC versus OOC? Where are the major RP hub locations? What supergroups partake in frequent roleplay? That sort of stuff. I have right now a character I'd like to go IC with I just want to be around the right people for the RP to work and not be random encounters that just might not make any sense at all.
So if anyone would like to give me the basic breakdown of how the flow goes around here I would greatly appreciate it.
RP Hubs too also vary by group. A lot of people congregate in the D but it attracts some very specific types of RP that not everyone wants, as well. Most groups I've been in congregate inside their SG base.
Perhaps your first step should be to define what you're looking for with your character (what degree of roleplay, as well as what themes; saving the world, or just saving people from muggers? Does your character kill or do they arrest people?) and then having a look in the stickied list of supergroups in this forum, or in-game, for a group that suits your needs.
A lot of these groups do have interviews, and applications, etc., to make sure that everybody is going to be compatible and after the same type and flavour of RP.
Hope you find a good group for your needs! -
Quote:They're in the game.Nothing said in any of the bios can be taken at face value. Any or all of it could be propaganda (from either side).
The tentacles, assuming they're actually in the game, could also be fakes operated by the State. Since they're conveniently inaccessible I'll believe they're part of a Praetorian Hamidon (or real at all) when and if we get to fight them.
I don't know how to embed images in the forum, but here's this.
