I can think of only one type of customization that would truly require an entire expansion and gobs of developer man hours to produce... especially if conversations at Comic Con last year still hold any water...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep.
Given the weight of circumstantial evidence we have this far out I'll be shocked if power customization isn't a feature of GR.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Dev's read the boards... Their has been rampant speculation (Well founded in my opinion) about Power customization since the Going Rogue announcement. They can't have missed that and I'm sure they have gotten some PMs over it. Add to that the last paragraph of this dev diary definately points in that direction.

The Devs have to know this is the conclusion people will draw and I can't imagine they are going to keep making hints like that and the finally say. "Ohh, you get new auras and a new poodle purse option". They are going to end up with a lot of dissapointed fans if they keep up hints like these and don't nip power customization speculation in the bud. I just can't believe they would let the speculation go like this on such a majorly requested feature then not deliver it.

But in the light of upcoming MMO competition which boast of their Power Customization features I think it would be very unwise for CoX not to at least try to overcome that limitation relatively soon.

[/ QUOTE ] Even if power customization doesn't happen here, it is thinking like this that will make Champions Online and DCUO two of the best things to happen to City Of Heroes players. Competition is a great thing for consumers.

[/ QUOTE ]
It doesn't matter if a player like me -actually- thinks this about those other games or not.
What would be good for us is if our Devs BELIEVE we think it's an important enticement to lead us astray.
Here's for doing my civic duty adding to the propaganda.

I know it sounds harsh but I'd rather our Devs be manipulated by us into thinking those games are going to be the best things since sliced bread and react to them as such even if they actually aren't...

[/ QUOTE ] I couldn't agree more. If they see the two upcoming MMOs as serious competition then our game will only improve. I personally hope both of the games are good, it will force the devs to come out with better content.*

*I'm not saying they do a bad job now, I think this is a great game. But serious competition is in our best interest.

How is power customization on the side of Occam's Razor?

Because Power Customization is pretty emo, and just *loves* listening to cure.

I won't even try to top that.

Here's the thing, though - not all of that is manipulation. I'll be the first to say I've been an unquestioning fan of this game for the past five years, yet even I've been looking at the competition. City of Heroes has always been a great game, be it by design or accident, and none of the newer ones have the right idea in my eyes. But it has also always been a game of bare bones basics. So, so many things have been said to be too much effort for what they're worth, or not things that would reach enough people, or not things that would make enough of an impact, and so forth. Luxury has never really been a part of this game on the grounds of cost vs. return concerns.

Well, this is exactly what a new game provides - it may not have the same breadth or depth of features, but what it will have is luxury. Menus that don't eat your line breaks, customization for powers even though not everyone cares for it, underwater zones, space zones, rayguns that shoot ice and so on and so forth. I know we can't have all of these things five years into the game, but I want to feel like the game is still getting luxuries. Quality of life, non-essential addons, new and cool little features, that sort of thing. To me, power customisation is one of these things. It's not essential to gameplay, but DANG if it isn't super cool anyway.

And at the end of the day, all of those little luxuries matter. We get used to them, forget about them and start feeling like they were always here. We don't appreciate what simple quality of life does for us. Who among you remembers how much better it is now that map markers spread out when you mouse over them? Who says a thanks every time he selects a rapier or a scimitar, or maybe even a shovel or a pipe wrench? Who remembers the time when your angels couldn't get their wings? These things matter. They're not all super-vital and they don't always offer a massive return on investment right then and there, but all of them make the game that much better, that much cooler and that much smoother.

Despite myself, I'm kind of glad for the competition, because it looks like it will bring in a lot of added quality.

Now that the technology is in place, Issue 15 is our first opportunity to provide a number of more universally themed costume change emotes as part of a regular content update for all of our players. It's our goal that everyone, even those who didn't purchase the Magic Super Booster Pack, will benefit from the extra time and resources that we've devoted to creating these booster packs.

I do.

I've got a level 40 DA/War Mace tank whose mace is a shovel, and I give thanks every time I play him, simply because hitting people in the face with a shovel somehow just never gets old.

Why don't they just come out and say "Hey guys you're getting power customization" ? They've dropped so many hints.

I expect our Devs will declare "Hey guys you're getting Power Customization" on or around August 31st.

Yeah I could see Paragon Studios waiting for the NDA to be null-in-void (ie. open beta begins) for Champs so that when people start saying, "wow CO is so much better because of x, y and z!" then this game can make the announcement, "uh, yeah about power customization....here it is "

Or at least that's what I'm thinking/hoping for

Oh and if it happens earlier than that, I'm okay with it!

If it brings power cust, good.

The amount of time and resources to bring it that BABs has previously explained time and time again, would probably take an expansion to get it done.

EDIT: Doesn't change the silliness of B_I's argument.

The idea that we are always from now on going to have to pay for costume parts as good as those in the booster packs (which is subjective btw--some have expressed that they think all the booster packs as ugly as spit on a hot sidewalk), I mean.

They have changed the audio in the test server, doors sound like doors, water sounds different if your in a pond (like those around the atlas ball) or if you go jump in a lake, and footsteps are different.

Im sure there is more, I was too concerned with getting the 5th TF done to notice

I have a sneaky suspicion that "Power Customization" is goign to end up a jazzed up version of "Costume Change Emotes."

Open the power Info Tab, select one of 3 or 4 preset "emotes" and then that emote replaces the power animation up to the point where it "fires."

This is more than I'm hoping for (this is what I expect, at best, from COs "Full Power Customization"). Being able to choose from a selected list of animations for each power would be amazing, and unlikely. I don't think Champions is going to be able to pull it off despite the promises (at least, not at launch, even in September).

My only expectation of Power Customization here is the ability to change the colors of the powers. (This is is also what I expect, at worst, from CO's Power Customization).

New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

I dampen out my hopes for expanding customization in Going Rogue. So for my lowered expectations.... I expect there to be a new custom attachment point for the back. This will be for things like backpacks, jet/jump-packs, quivers, sword sheeves, etc.
