I think there is confusion here. If I'm correct, you are confusing "low hanging fruit" to "low priority" or "back burner".

In fact, the term "low hanging fruit" means things that are easier than most to accomplish, it's easier to implement another batch of power proliferation than it is to implement power customization.

In this description "power proliferation" is low hanging fruit, and "power customization" is fruit higher up the tree and therefor would require more work to "pick".

Responding to the "too little too late" comment made earlier.......

It's just my opinion, but some people still would have gone to CO, even if we did have everything anyone ever wanted, just for the fact that CO is new.

And I'm not saying that it's how the poster is, but some people are quick to jump onto something new and wish death upon the place where they came from. (From what I see on the CO boards when I read them, they want this game to crash and burn, and see CO as the end all be all of future MMOs. I don't see them comment too much on DCUO.)

[/ QUOTE ]
Well I did use a "too little too late" phrase earlier in this thread so I'll assume this was directed at me.

To begin with I'm a 60+ month vet of CoX so after that much time it's kind of hard to randomly question my degree of loyalty to this game. But by the same token I'm a realist and realize that CO does represent credible competition to this game which has otherwise enjoyed years of a virtual niche monopoly in the MMO world.

I care enough about CoX to understand that if by some miracle CO manages to answer most if not all of the lingering desires this game still fails to provide then it's going to encourage people to jump ship even more than just the "new game" factor by itself would. Based on everything I've seen so far concerning CO if this game ends up only offering a "half-baked" solution to Power Customization then it could very well be "too little too late" on that particular issue.

I'm not looking for either game to "win or lose" against each other. In fact if CO ends up being good I actually intend to play both so that I can enjoy their unique differences and strengths. But it's entirely possible that if one game doesn't stand up to the challenge and falls far behind the other then it could end up getting plowed under. I'm not "wishing" that fate on anyone. *shrugs*

CO and DCUO are probably more direct competitors of each other than either is of CoH in all but genre. If I were a CO developer, I would be far more concerned with positioning against DCUO, which likely has more money and name recognition than CO, and is apparently targetting a similar style of play.

If the dev team of CoX is smart, they won't try to outdo either CO or DCUO. They will tack into directions CO and DCUO can't pursue, and develop in those directions.

And you can understand why I'm confused as to why some CO guys want this game to choke and die, and completely ignore DCUO. DCUO could surprise them and blow them out of the water.

I want to try DCUO, being a lifelong DC fan myself. I wouldn't wish death upon the competition however, even if I did leave bitter. (Which some people that are going to CO are....they didn't get what they want here, so they feel the game doesn't deserve to compete with CO. A narrow view IMO, but some people cannot be reasoned with.) Heck, I'll play BOTH DCUO and CoX. It just causes me to wonder when CO fans feel that they are the only superhero MMO that deserves to be around.

We will lose some yes. But if we survived the WoW Juggernaut, we can survive anything. For those who left or are leaving bitter, good riddance.

[/ QUOTE ]

Would you care to elaborate on what directions those might possibly be?

I've been a player of COX since Issue 1 and I don't really see anything that's been done here that CO could not. Apart from MA...which is still a rehash of the same mission types we have had all along with player-made stories and custom critters.

Now as I stated above, I'm a loyal player. Still, apart from our amazing character creator and travel powers(which have seen no new additions since launch), we aren't so much different from other MMOs in terms of how this game is played.

The truth is that most people who criticize this game often have the same complaint. Repetitive content. Both the environments(which are static) and the scope of missions. That's not just random forum ragers on the net...its also present in most reviews of this game.

A lot has been added to this game since launch. However, the greater part of it has been cosmetic or related to villains. Other stuff has been things we should have had all along(like real numbers). I'm not saying I'm not grateful for what the devs have done, but in terms of this game going in directions which CO can't...not seeing it happening at present.

Castle and his crew were entirely consumed by custom critter powers in the 13-14 time frame. There's no dishonesty or secret agendas...there was just a lot of work that went in under the hood for Mission Architect.

There wasn't any time for powerset proliferation then, and with the work being done for future content, there's not really a lot of time to do it now. Proliferation is very low hanging fruit, but we're really jammed right now and I honestly can't say when we might be able to squeeze in another batch. What we need always ends up taking precedence over what we want, and right now there's a lot of need.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, speaking for me, as a dedicated altaholic, new powersets and combinations are what have kept me playing for 5 years straight. Proliferation is a poor-man's version of new sets, but I enjoyed experimenting with new builds all the same.

But with nothing new for a while, and nothing new on the horizon....

Look, I have played this game for at least 10-20 minutes a day ( and often MUCH longer ) for almost every day of those 5 years. And now, for more than 2 weeks, I haven't even logged on, just checked these Dev postings once a day.
I understand you have limited resources, and can't please everyone, but even just giving one thing, like dark blast to blasters, or whatever, would keep me playing for another issue. As it is, with no hope of anything new in sight, I think I am deactivating my account. It is been great fun, and maybe I'll be back in a year when there is something new to play with.

GL all!

All this was,was a panic move to draw attention back to COX since a soon to be launhed game has alot more to offer in the form of customization. They have stated for years they would eventually like to add more indepth customization...all this did was re-state it...nothing ground breaking or exciting

Except Corruptors aren't similar to Blasters at all, other than sharing a ranged primary and +400% (500%) damage cap. The whole point of wanting a Dark Blaster is to do Blaster-level damage on the attacks, and to pair it with a Blaster secondary (Dark/EM or Rad/EM would be pretty hot).

For example, I'm putting off making a Trick Arrow character until Corruptors get the set (I want Fire/TA, dammit!) and since the pet nerf in I14 I've been waiting until Cold Domination gets ported to Controllers and Masterminds so I can make my /Storm Troller and MM builds as /Cold.

Actually, they've said "no" to power customization for years.

[/ QUOTE ]

They said a flat-out 'no' in July 07, but have since said that they are going to be doing things that they had previously said they couldn't do. Here's the Timeline of Quotes:

Oct 2005 - City of Villains released: staff cutbacks begin

Feb 2007 - '(Power Customization) would completely dominate some of the artists' time for multiple issues'

April 2007 - '... that level of Power Customization still suffers from the same “It’s a near impossible schedule hit” problem it always has.'

July 2007 - 'As much as I would love to have a purple energy blast or green fire, I don’t see it happening anytime soon.'

July 2007 - 'We've basically made the decision that it's not going to happen, and I took the opportunity of the Q&A to inform you guys of that.'

Sep 2007 - 'there's nothing insurmountably difficult about power color customization, it's just a tremendous amount of time to pull it off.'

Nov 2007 - CoH sold to NCsoft. 'Our plans are clear. We are now in a position to make a major reinvestment in the City of Heroes product line.'

Aug 2008 - NC NorCal (as was) advertises for new positions including VFX artist, technical artist, senior software engineer and game engineer

Aug 2008 - 'Character Creator 2.0 includes Powers Customization, allowing players to customize not only the character, but also the actual look of its powers' (only market research!)

Nov 2008 - 'We’ve hired some new programmers to look into sprucing up our graphics...'

Nov 2008 - 'I will say that there are things coming, some of which we have been hinting at, or maybe even flat out denying was even possible, for a long time.'

??? 2009 - 'Don't tell the competition who's been touting only they can do that thing. The river runs red at midnight. Or blue. Or green. Your choice. Shhh.'

April 2009 - 'All I can really comment on at this time is that NCsoft is providing us with more resources than ever before and we have some great stuff planned for our players over the coming months and years.'

May 2009 - 'We've hired some "Type-R" programmers (inside joke) to investigate and deliver (a graphical update).'

May 2009 - 'Power Customization is one of those things that we couldn't do at Cryptic. That's all I'll say about that.'

June 2009 - 'While all of these added customization options are part of the immediate content going into Issue 15, it's really only a sampling of a much larger picture - as hinted by the recent announcement of the Going Rogue expansion. Our players can expect to hear some very exciting news about the new, much larger systems we've been working on to support and expand the customization aspect of City of Heroes within the next few months.'

A dark blaster is not the same as a dark corruptor, just like a scrapper is not a brute. If they are the same to you, well, that is you, not the AT's.

As for Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning, have these been stated by a redname anywhere, if so I missed it, or are you quoting conjecture.

Even if true, we haven't had any new powers or proliferation in a long time, and issue 16 is at least 5-6 months out, I assume, since I15 isn't out the door yet.
