Should newbies PL?

Here's a question for you all to chew on- should newbies to CoH/CoV ever Powerlevel?

In my opinion, no. Once you've been playing for a while and understand how the game/archetypes/powersets work, then go ahead and PL.

But if you're new, I don't believe you should be PL'ing. You do yourself and your teammates no favours if you've quickly gotten to a high level and still don't know where the auction house is, how to find the train stations, and such, or how your archetype should function.

Instead, if you're new, take your time. Play through the game's content- what's the point if you skip it all just to hit 50?
Learn how the different archetypes function, what their strengths and weaknesses are. Observe the different powersets in action, note their pros and cons. You don't have to be a master number cruncher, but take the time to understand how enhancements work, how to get around, use the markets and NPC stores, and so on.

In short, learn the game before you even think about PL'ing.
You have friends who've been with the game awhile? Either have them make new characters to play with you, or have them SK you and do some of their missions. The beauty of the SK/Exemplar feature is that people of different levels can play together (minus level restricted zones and TFs).

Of course, with any rule there are a couple of exceptions I can think of:

One might be that the newbie has some supportive real-life friends, or a very supportive SG who help them gain levels quickly, but at the same time are also doing a lot of teaching about game mechanics, playstyles, etc. So the newbie does not end up with a high level character they are clueless about using.

Or if newbie needs to level up a character quickly for a specific purpose (they are in a PVP SG, or their SG needs a few more of a specific AT for things they like to do), and helps the newbie roll a character for that specific purpose and level up, again with lots of teaching along the way.

Aside from those sort of scenarios, newbies should not PL, IMHO.

What you said. I agree entirely. It's not fair to anyone including the developers of the game, to skip everything in it to race to the top. There's nothing much at the top, it's all from ground level.

Babies have just as much right to be on the road as you do! Are you honestly so arrogant you're going to say only someone tall enough to reach the brakes *and* see over the wheel can drive? I be you're going to say they have to able to read street signs and know a whole bunch of stupid "traffic laws" too. We need more traffic on our highways so you're just going to have to put up with babies there or not have enough revenue for road maintenance!

Of course the only opinion that counts on the question "should Player X powerlevel" is that of Player X.

This game is not rocket science. It can be learned on the fly. I know people who do not, as far as I know, PL, but who don't know basic tactics much less subtleties of play. I don' t PL and still find things I didn't know. How I got to the present level of the character who discovers the new thing does'nt really seem to be a factor.

But the main thing, again, is that no one else's opinion matters a darn on this question.

If they take away the abilities for babies to drive I'm going to quit life. Seriously, 95% of the people using cars were baby drivers. Without them there's no reason to drive anymore...

Generally? No.

I've PLed maybe a grand total of 10 levels between all of my characters combined. It's just not enjoyable.

If someone can handle being PLed, and playing that particular character, then let them do what they please. While they've got Level 50's to show their commitment, I've got... Badges. :P

No.

I'd imagine it's better to learn the limits of your powersets against Hellions and Trolls, not Nemesis and Malta.

That and... one of the things I really enjoy is hitting a new zone for the first time - exploring the streets and taking out new bad guys (or good guys) If you 'start' at 50 the first time you see a new zone it's all grey to you, and that's much less interesting.

They CAN, and they have a right to.

But "should" they? As should is a question of opinion and not fact, I again say.... no.

Instant gratification isn't always a good thing for an MMO and handing out levels to inexperienced players never is.

I vote no since I actually had my first 50 PL'd.

/incoming life story

I had resumed playing back about 2 weeks before a double xp weekend. I had just joined an SG and when double xp weekend hit they convinced me (against my initial wishes) to join a farm and get PL'd. I hit 50 and had no idea what do to, where to go etc. I had leveled up to 45 on a different hero before but that was chiefly done through grinding radio missions so I was still oblivious to a majority of what the game had to offer and had no idea exactly what ppl did at 50 aside from boring [censored], repetitive farms (which ironically is the activity that got me to 50).

It was miserable, and I ended up not playing that hero anymore. So yeah, for your first guy don't get PL'd :P

I'm actually taking it nice and slow on my current project. Going through as many story arcs as I can solo with a little teaming now and then on the side.

I'm changing my answer after thinking about it a little bit more(I deleted my other post).

If they want to. The game isn't hard to learn, so if they want to powerlevel 1-50 their first day in game I'm fine with that.

If a level 50 asks me where to buy single origin enhancements, I'll just answer the question instead of getting annoyed. If someone level 35 wants to know where Talos Island is, I'll just answer instead of getting on my soapbox like an [censored].

Basically, if the other person wants to powerlevel, I don't care because it doesn't affect me in any meaningful way.

This.

It takes an extra 30 seconds or so to explain where to get something, as opposed to the now common: "Go get to fifty the right way you idiot" or "PLing is bad mmkay", or my favorite "Learn to play the game! /Petition". Come on folks, play nice, just because you learned it at level 15 doesn't give you a free pass to be mean.
