Should newbies PL?

That's very arrogant and short-sighted as it implies that that person knows what's best for a new player.

[/ QUOTE ] Isn't that what the entire discussion is about?

Do you know what Fulcrum Shift is? Sure, most of us do. Do you know its recharge? AoE radius? Is it auto-hit? What's the boost per enemy? What's the +DAM cap for your AT? How many little FS dots cap you? How meaningful is that for your character? How much is FS worth for you at the beginning of a fight? At the end?

[/ QUOTE ]

none of that really matters to a player, unless they're really into numbers.

I've been here five years, I've got a mind/kin controller who was 'born' the first month of the game's existance, and I don't know the answer to those questions.

And it doesn't matter, because the power still works great and the character is still effective.

How did I learn how to use it?
I read the description and fired it off a couple of times.

Oh, SO COMPLICATED!

The game is designed to be player friendly and let people be effective out of the starting gate. There are very few things in it that can't be dialed in with a few minutes of experimentation.

that sounds infinitely more entertaining than your brand of conformity, preaching the "right" way to play from your soapbox and mindlessly following Daddy's rules because, uh, well, he's DADDY.

Don't skip things until you know what you're skipping. The game does take a fair bit of learning, simply due to the complexity involved.

[/ QUOTE ]

This game is easy. I learned more about the game in MID's than I did reading the crap in game.

Even then, this game is still easy to learn. It's not rocket science, and at the same time it's not overwhelming either.

This game is easy. Very easy.

Is there no middleground anymore? Either nobody should powerlevel for any reason no matter what, or all bets should be off and everyone should have the ability to powerlevel so hard that someone who just installed the game can go from 1-50 in 30 minutes by accident? All people who follow rules are mindless sheep and doing so just because they're conformists? And the only alternative is to be a rebel who disobeys all rules because it's cool and those people in charge don't know what they're doing anyway?

Yeesh.

there's plenty of middle ground, although none of it resides under the feet of the person I was addressing.

Except that after PLing there's -nothing- to do.

How many times have you seen people on the forums complain about the lack of 'end Game' content? Exacerbate this with a lack of knowledge of the game itself and you've got a Newblet who really doesn't feel there's a point to the game.

If you're talking about PLing 3-10 levels then... I don't -really- care if newbs do it. If you're talking 12+ levels then yeah. They should NOT powerlevel.

-Rachel-

[/ QUOTE ]

3-10 levels would be the middle ground of 'No PLing' and 'PL everything!' wouldn't it?

Again. Baseless Accusations and pointless negativity from Nethergoat. How shocking.

After engaging in a multi-page debate in another thread, I am perhaps overqualified to venture an informed opinion on the subject.

I'm not sure how quoting yourself mounting the soapbox and dictating how other people should play the game disproves my thesis, but whatever.

And I'm realistic, not negative.

When people argue from logically deficient positions, I call them on it whether they be dev, player or some as yet undiscovered third race.

I think that whole problem with newbies coming into this game, are those that come from games like EQ and Wow. Where the END GAME is everything.
So they come into this one not knowing anything and think its the same. So they PL and find out that they were wrong.
So what do they do? Quit? Make another character and hopfully play thru the content and LEARN how to really play THIS game.

It doesn't take long to LEARN how to really play THIS game.

Where do people get the idea that this game is some kind of byzantine cipher requiring years of careful study to unravel?

it's a very basic, casual friendly game that even a thawed-out caveman could learn to play in an afternoon. It's added some complexity over the years, but none of that stuff is necessary to succeed.

I used to wonder that same thing.
But then.
I thought.
Maybe some people think this game is "Hard".

I think attempting to control OCD is "Hard".
I almost stopped making new characters because I end up trying to get badges on each of them. For me, badge hunting can almost ruin the game.
It drives me crazy. I wish I could turn off visually seeing the badges inside the options thing somewhere. This is a struggle for me. It is hard.

But, it is apparent to me that some people.
Think just playing this game.
Is hard.

In my least charitable moods I entertain the niggling suspicion that a player who fancies himself an expert at the game needs to invest that expertise with extra virtue as having been obtained by great exertions.

Now the folks who go out and crunch numbers and run different scenarioes to get esoteric number about the effectiveness of various designs and strategies have put in a lot of effort, and more power to 'em. But that degree of dedication is not needed for expertise.

I believe upthread a ways someone was trotting out questions like "how nany points of damage does this attack do when slotted that way?"

That level of minutiae is not at all necessary to design and slot a character who will do just fine in play, or to work out effective tactics for different powersets. And sometimes it does seem that most passionate lrn2ply advocates are implying that it is.

No one should power level. Ever. Period. Why cheat yourself of the feeling of satisfaction of EARNING your level 50 toon? I honestly can't understand why anyone would want to cheat themselves.

Power leveling? Farming? Why not just pay the folks who'll play your character for you?

[/ QUOTE ]

Your ******ity just irritates me. Hows about you pay everyones subscription fee then you can sit there and tell us what to do.

If not... ***U.

I have "earned" 18 level 50s.
I have "PL" 6 level 50s.

Why do you **'n care how I get to lvl 50?

[/ QUOTE ]

(heaves heavy sigh) Wow, get defensive much? Honestly, I couldn't care less what you do with your toons or how you play the game. I just don't do it myself because seems like you are giving yourself the short end of the stick with power leveling. Not that it matters but I'd rather get inside of my character and BUILD them even if it takes a lot of time. I've got a few that I really enjoy playing because I've come to know them. Bringing a character up to 50 over a few weeks or even months gives me a sense of satisfaction worth $15 bucks a month.

So do what you want with you 800 level 50 characters, My toons are like old comfortable slippers. And they're all my favorites.
