Should newbies PL?

1. As a veteran of many a flame-war, some of them far more intense than this little dust-up you're having with the 'goat here, I can tell you this: posting that a war has left you feeling "emotionall distressed and out of sorts" is really, really poor policy.

[/ QUOTE ]

Still smarting over some of the butt-whoopings I gave you over the years?

Relax, I'm kidding... mostly. It's been a while...

Despite our differences in the past (although we had some shared positions over the years, I remember both of us just annihilating some folks over issues we shared) there's something comforting about coming back and seeing that you and some of my other sometime nemeses are still here.

Anyway...

On topic, it's hard to have an opinion about it. I'm actually a supporter of a veteran's right to PL their new toon, especially the folks who've been here for years. I mean, can anyone seriously tell me, someone who's been playing on and off since launch (though, mostly "on", but with some extended breaks, despite an active account), that I don't know how the game works and that I can't play a PL'd character and still know how they work?

That being said... what's a "newbie"? Seriously, how "new" are we talking? A couple months? First toon on a brand new account? A few days? A week? What's "new"?

I don't think a new person to ANY game should PL their character, but not because it hurts me or other players, per se... after all, I can just kick them from whatever team I'm on. But I think it hurts the new person. I think it allows for the opportunity for the new person to experience the illusion of completion when the reality is that it eliminates any and all context in which the character has advanced. They have a level 50 toon, great... but they have no idea why that's a big deal. In fact many players who've never NOT PL'd their toon often make comments about how easy the game is.

Look, this game's not hard, but it's not WoW-level easy either.

Ultimately it's up to us vets to lead the way, to try to teach new folks who want to learn what it is to enjoy the game. The reality is that on a good team of relatively close level characters with the right difficulty you can experience XP earnings that are pretty close to MA PL sessions, but with the gameplay and content to go with it. That's the kind of thing that new players need to see, that you can achieve rapid advancement through proper gameplay, and that it's vastly more satisfying. Not to mention a hell of a lot more fun than standing at the entrance to the missions /afk.

The next time you have an opportunity, try bringing one of these guys along. Try spending all of thirty seconds telling them that if they join a decent team (maybe your own, if you're on one and LFM) they can experience the game the way it's supposed to be experienced, and still earn mad XP. Show them.

Either way, even if we all end up in concensus on the issue in this thread, the reality is that it'll accomplish nothing... after all, do you really think that PLing newbies come to the forums?

Have not read a single word of the OP or anyone after. Just answering the question in the title.

No.

If they pay 15 bucks a month or more, it is NONE of my business how they play the game. As long as they are not RMTers, I just don't care. And I really don't think any of you should care either.

If you join a team and feel someone is not living up to how awesome you think they should be... Quit

If you are the leader of a team and someone is there that in your opinion sucks... Kick Them

Your (anyones) opinions on how people should play the game... Is you (anyone) telling people what to do with their money. It really is none of your (anyone) business.

Ah powerleveling. The topic that spawned a thousand flame wars back in the day. Nothing good EVER comes from it and when the old devs were around we kept getting tweaked and otherwise punished in game due to efforts to stop those that were powerleveling or farming.

I fall on the powerleveling is a bad thing and shouldn't be done by anyone side of the fence. If someone wants to cheat themselves out of the game experience though that is their prerogative. If the race to 50 is all a person cares about though then they are probably playing the wrong game.

How in the **** have I cheated myself out of content I personally have done over 50 times?

I hate that side of the fence, "Oh you will cheat yourself out of doing the same **** you have already done a bazillion times"

If someone has over 20 50s in this game and they are still playing it, really it shouldnt matter to you at all what they are doing or why, unless they break the TOS or EULA.

No kidding. I completely agree.

Also pretty foolish to tell a vet who has done the content on multiple 50s that they are cheating themselves out of a game experienced they have already [censored] experienced.

Newbies on the other hand (as in just logged in) is a different story.

Even with that said, as long as they are not using an exploit (which btw is up to the devs to determine, not some snowflakes on the fourms) then i couldn't give a rats [censored] what newbs do.

If I end up teaming with them and i discover they have turned into NOOBs, there is an option for me to exercise that doesn't need me crying and moaning about farming and pling on the forums: the kick and quit button.

tl;dr: As long as they aren't breaking the devs rules, let em play however the hell they want.

There's a difference between telling someone how they should play, and a bunch of vets sitting around talking about whether or not it's a good idea for a newbie to PL their first character to 50. I sort of see this as the latter.

I . . . agree, reluctantly.

If a newbie asked me if they should I would say, play the game regularly at least once.

Especially if it's a character that's tougher to play for a newb (read: no mez prot, no defensive shields, etc).

However, I would still say "it's up to you to play how you want. It's your game."

/shrug... that's the thrust, really. There's not much else to it.

I get a kick out of this debate, ever time I see it because it's invariably carried out by all participants as though there's somethign to be decided, or as though the discussion will resolve something. As though somehow if we can come to a concensus then all of a sudden people will change their behaviour.

"Really? A bunch of people I do'nt know had a discussion on an internet forum that I never read? They what? They decided that newbies shouldn't powerlevel?! Well, [censored].... that ruins my fun. I guess I'll go play Halo."

I mean, seriously...

However, in all fairness I hope they never stop happening, I love these argument threads.

Opinion != fact

Please don't present one as the other. And I'll thank you not to put words to my posts that weren't there before you 'interpreted' things.

See this thread!

No. Newbies should not PL! It will skew their view of the game as a "Farm Fest" and they will find it harder to learn the REAL game!

Not sure why people claim to even care about this supposed 'issue'. We have /ignore, ratings, and notes. Use them.

This issue could be debated for years...oh wait it already has, and nothing will change. Regardless of the outcome you can't do crap about it so move on.

It's a game, for personal enjoyment, not the environment or a political leader.
