Thank you very much for this. I would have really looked forward to the Crey content, I always thought that they were under-used. But ...

Seriously? Four whole issues of Battalion, and what was going to follow them was yet another, even more powerful, invasion of Earth? You guys really were stuck in the Lensman rut, weren't you?

(For those of you who haven't read the series, Doc Smith solved every plot by making the lead characters more powerful, then set up the sequel by making the villains of each book pawns of an even more powerful villain group for the next book, for which the heroes became more powerful, until, I kid you not, four hero kids fight the god-level bad guys by using a catapult that throws whole star systems. It gets really, really ridiculous fast after the first couple of books.)

(If you want another example, Superman has always had this same problem: writers write themselves into a corner with a villain that can nullify all of Superman's existing powers, which they then solve by giving him yet another power. Eventually the list of powers gets so long and ridiculous they have to reboot the whole series.)

Here's a tip for your next project, something to think about: there comes a point where the characters are already so powerful that the players can't identify with them. Instead of writing more and more abstract god-levels for them to fight on, write stories where superpowers are helpful, but not enough. Detective stories. Political intrigues. Interpersonal dramas. Public relations wars. Stories where at various points, the bad guys send waves of goons at you or spring traps on you, out of desperation, because they were hoping that someone less powerful than you would be who they had to face, yes, just to have an element of combat in there -- but have the actual threat be something you can't just punch in the face. That eliminates the whole power escalation treadmill.

Count me in as another person whose two favorite villains were Scirocco and Ghost Widow. That would be an amazing SSA to play! Also hoping Dr. Aeon and Protean will release the full story of Dream Doctor, soon.

I can't help but think I really missed something, regarding lore as I was completely unfamiliar with Battalion as an enemy. Looks like I'll have to go run around in Ouroboros and pay closer attention to the Rikti missions.

Also loved the different time-travel methods. I was trying to figure out how Epoch from Chrono Trigger would figure in but realize it would probably count as a steampunk machine.

And thank you for posting this, it made a lot of CoH'ers happy

Some answers are not satisfying. Some answers are made up, and that answer only exists in that doc. I tried to get everyone who was involved in the stuff at the end to answer the questions as best they could.

MM: Matt Miller (Positron)
JH: John Hegner (Protean)
JAH: Jeff Hamilton (Arbiter Hawk)
SM: Sean McCann (Dr. Aeon)
RG: Ryan Greene (Viridian)
TS: Tim Sweeney (Black Scorpion)

If there is a miracle and somehow CoH is saved, we reserve the right to change any and all answers given in the doc, to maintain suspense and surprise.
As a non-beta, but week 1 subscriber. Thanks.

I truly believe that NCSoft was the best, and worst, thing that happened to CoH. I think the game became much better after the sale...well..until the betrayal.

Thank you Matt and team.

NCSoft.....go pancake yourself.

This.

Seriously. Last thing we would've needed after two years of Praetoria would be two years of Battalion, followed by two years of Dimensionless, followed by two years of Frieza, followed by two years of Cell.

FUNNY you should mention that EK. Go to AE; look for Crisis of Infinite Fusionettes by @Ran-San Many of them were still played (though with decreasing frequency) by the Players who made them, all friends of Ran.

Whaaaaa.

Yeah, they should have just stuck with the "one issue, one threat that's wrapped up by the end" formula.

You also realize 4 issues isn't necessarily 2 full years right? We had 22, 23, and almost 24 all within the same year, potentially even 25 give or take a month.

Don't forget Dr. Nova, finally besting karma.

It was actually mentioned in-game after that - one(or more) of the Tip missions mentioned
it was an ongoing problem. But I didn't get much sense of whether it was a "serious,
cascading collapse" problem, or a "straggler here and there" kind.

The arc itself implied Hugo's influence on this process would have created the former, so
with Manticore escaping with both him and Gally, it was hard to tell where that thread
might have been headed in the end, and lots of other potential questions with a rogue
Bane Executioner and a Longbow Officer romancing on hero side were raised as well.

Like most of the stuff I asked personally, it was small(or seemed small) in the Grand Lore
Scheme, but it was a thread that always interested me, and I wanted to know how it
might've ended up. So I asked!

Thanks so much for doing this. It's a little sad to find things out this way rather than in the game, but it made for a fun read. I'd especially have loved to see the Scirocco series, I've been really looking forward to seeing him redeemed.

Though annoyingly I only just managed to ask the question that I'd been forgetting about the possibility of if we'd ever see The Grimm Fairy! It would have been great if we found her when going through the Battalion storyline and working with the Rikti. I really can't picture what she'd look like and would like to see her in game...

So considering there were plans for issues up to 32, incarnate clots beyond --core?-- hadnt been thought out yet? Or not enough to even say, we were toying with this idea but most likely not? I woulda settled for that rather than not saying anything...

:/

Good read tho! Thanks Posi!

I feel the same way. I was hoping this wouldn't show up until November 29th with no sign of the game being saved. Spoiling it all now, then going back and changing everything to reflect the game being saved (if it were saved) just seems....wrong to me. Like New 52 wrong (except I'm sure PS would've done a better job with the New 52).

Still, downloaded and saved just in case....

I will learn to forgive you for that. Until that point, I'll just cry and see this as a sign of things to come.

I will continue City of Heroes in a tabletop version if our efforts fail us, so feel free to give as much information as you can though.

I do have to say, thank you, even though this is the moment my heart breaks. Until now, I had hope.

The fact that you hadn't posted lore is the one thing I've kept as a bullwark of hope. I'd rather have it this way though. At least there's some kind of closure for the MMO and we at least have an end to the story. I stopped watching TV for that reason. The networks didn't feel they owed us that closure or ending, and cancelled some of my favoite shows with no end to the story.

But with your help, oh the stories I have yet to tell in tabletop... Thank you, Mr. Miller.

Feed that, and perhaps console my tears a little more. Keep the lore coming as much as you can. Finish my stories so I can at least find closure to this travesty.

No joke, this breaks my heart. At least continue to give me all you and your team can. I love all you have done, and what you have left to do for us. I've never met you in person, but if I ever do, I'll buy you whatever drink you want, and as many of it. You and anyone else from Paragon Studios. You have my word on it.

...

Though as one of our SG's leaders, I have tried to find us a new home, I always end it with "I know it's not City of Heroes, though... but nothing will be."

This was more than a story to many of us. There a couple of my SG mates that made me read everything aloud in Vent while we ran the missions (they love me because I 'do the voices' for them) especially the newer stuff. The story was important to all of us, and from everything you guys have done the last few issues, it was the best yet.

Tell them I said that. Everyone there. It's important.

We didn't just critisize the "Who will die" story arc like many did; we talked about it, discussed lore and motivations. It was interesting enough for us to discuss. I actually got to talk to folks about the lore from the comics that most of my SG never read. I got to explain elements from the novels that got brought into the lore of rthe game itself. I was a lore junky before this, and all the recent stories made that lore relevant and started tying everything together in the game.

Thank any and all who are responsible for that. They deserve it, no matter what anyone else says. Tell them "Lycantropus thanks you" for what that's worth, and if you see it, know I have nothing but respect for all of your efforts to bring the lore to the game, warts and all.

I can't type anymore, I can't stop the crying fits... I just hope I don't wake my wife up.

Thank you, Positron (I don't care what you can legally call yourself) You didn't have to do this, and don't have to keep doing it (since you labeled it pt. 1) but any and all you add is just that much more I have to work with. The world will not go dark, just reborn in other settings.

Thank you, again. I... I can't thank you enough for all you and everyone at Paragon has done for us, and may yet do.

I won't lie. I hope the game can be saved, but this is possibly the most sad I've been since all of this started. However, if it's to end... keep doing it.

Lycantropus

Which would come as a tremendous shock to historians, who were under the impression that Athenian democracy lasted for a hair over 400 years.

But, come on, this is a comic book game. If you didn't recognize something anti-democratic, vaguely fascist, about the urge to be rescued from the lesser people by a strong man who is above all laws, this is just another wake-up call. You can write pro-democratic, anti-fascist comic books; the writers of Captain America have generally managed it. But it's not the default for the genre.

I know my post was very... conflicted, but that's how I feel. I want the story, but I don't want _THIS_ to end.

I don't have any questions, because I want to know everything. I wouln't know where to begin. I also want to see everything happen as it's supposed to, organically, even though the possiblity of it is much more dim to me than it was yesterday.

Except, Tim, that doesn't fully explain how its possible to devour or destroy a Well permanently. That would seem to be impossible under that theory.
How I understood it is when the Battalion go to conquer a well rather than letting the energy escape they absorb it into themselves. So it doesn't have another 'way out'. Which kind of works with the word 'consume'.

I also assumed that when the Battalion conquer another race they somehow find a way to siphon the energy generated by that race into themselves.

If your mouse has greater processing power than your gfx card, the answer is yes.

You know, someone should sit down and write up CoH as a system-neutral RPG setting.

Thank you guys so, so much for going to the effort of answering these questions for us.

I am kicking myself so hard for not getting my questions put into the googledoc in time, though. A few of them were answered in other questions, but I really wanted to know the others...if y'all decide to do this again, it would be deeply appreciated. And if not, then thank you again for clarifying the lore, and giving us an inside look at how things are done. Getting that peek behind the scenes was really interesting.

And holy crap, I would have loved to play in that Champions game!

Yes, because that's not a lore question.

It'd be like asking Hawkward "So, were there plans to make customizable weapon auras?"
