I'm more than cautiously optimistic, and that's simply based on facts. We know NCSoft was willing to cut the game to save costs. We also know that Paragon Studios is committed and passionate about the game. Thirdly, we know that we the playerbase are loyal to not only this game but the studio generally.

These three things suggest a studio confident enough to go independent, have an almost guaranteed audience to go with them, and ideally, an IP that they could own outright and not be told what to do with. Cryptic rolled the dice on that with Champions and although they got sold off, they got sold to a company that was willing to support them. But most importantly, they got to keep their game. PWE doesn't own, they do.

Presuming in the best case that Paragon earns the right to take the CoH IP with them (and from all accounts, I think NCSoft/Nexon would be happy to cut itself loose somewhat from the North American market and a game that doesn't really fit their current profile), then the challenge becomes getting a new backer. I've already heard some better than average talk that such backers do exist should this transpire. I'm not going to say anything until these things are stated as facts by people more in the know than I, but safe to say I don't think these are pipe dreams.

An Australian saying about people who are spiteful is 'they'd cut their nose off to spite their face,' and I don't think NCSoft are necessarily being spiteful, and in the right negotiating conditions, they may well give over the rights. Clearly they parted company with Cryptic on very affable terms, and if a strong enough case in terms of player interest, profit for NCSoft and good relations with NCSoft can be presented, I can see this going very well.

In the event that NCSoft is going to be intractable on the point of the IP, we may well still get an independent Paragon Studios that then has total freedom to create what they want and shop it around. This is not a bad thing. The studio already has a track record for consistently maintaining a profitable MMO in a profit downturn environment. If I were investing in a developer studio, that would be enormously comforting to know these people can perform and over a consistently long period of time.

And that's just thinking it through logically, folks.

I found it a while back. I think I've had a total of 4 people on there at some point, but taken all but one back out. I was tempted--sometimes daily--to put GG in there, but I never did.

(In the interest of disclosure, Venture was the first one I put on ignore, then took him back out that same day... I just started avoiding his MA review threads as a whole instead.)

I would not fault any Dev who chose not to return because of finding some other more secure position in the meantime.
Eh, it's Silicon Valley. Half the people here work, or have worked for a startup. There may be risk, but the reward is often worth the risk. I know no one in this area who looks at a time at a failed startup as a black mark on a resume.

Some of the devs will find other jobs. Some will want more stability and not be interested in a startup. Others will jump at the chance to keep doing the work they love on the project they've worked so hard on.

Even if none of the original devs come - and I think that's not gonna happen - then others will get it moving again. I'm sure that can be done, and I'm sure there are people who'd take the chance.

I didn't start actively ignoring people until after all this closing buisness came down. I am used to a more...idiotic crowd, and no one here had managed to push me to hit ignore until then. But at that point, a couple of people were posting for no other reason then to be jerkholes, and I wasn't really in the mood for it.

On topic, this news is having the desired effect, and people are perking up. Very nice move on Paragons part.

Actually...doesn't make much sense. My hero uses a sword. Oh well, I guess I'll have to level a TA character if we make it.

This thread just goes to show that the line I play at the end of my shows from Animal house is correct... "Nothing is over until we decide it is." Between this, the CoH vet and alumni sites and facebook groups starting up, the petitions, we have hope. Just a fools hope, but hope, and that is the important thing right now.

A spec of hope that was badly needed thanks for the update Golden Girl. I'll try to rouse those I can in my SG and beyond. To the depth of even Telnet itself shall I go!

Goddamnit. What is that I'm feeling. Is it....is it...HOPE? Now I must be crazy.

Dear Paragon Studios,

If you are blessed with success and manage to save CoH, please hire this woman to make her awesome videos for you.

I could never pledge a thousand at one time, and this comes at an especially tight time. But I'd definitely be in for something (three month's subscription fee, minimum) if a kickstarter is set up to assist Paragon Studios.

If there are over ten thousand of us willing to do whatever we can (as the petition at this time suggests), and potentially incentivised further by in-game rewards, even the smaller contributions would add up to a lot.

Also, just to et you know, as part of the player rescue effort, and building on the spread of our story on gaming and mainstream news sites, we're planning to issue a press release tomorrow that outlines the situation and our goals, which should help to continue coverage of the story.

Meanwhile, we're continuing the letter writing campaign to the head of NCSoft, as well as the online petition - and any Twitter users are encouraged to use the hashtag #SaveCoH in an attempt to get it trending.

If Paragon managed to spin off and become an independent studio, I would buy everything on the Paragon Market. EVERYTHING. Even stuff I will never use.

If they manage to climb out of this then I will definitely be buying a ton of points.

Well... considering they have 11,000 people willing to put up $$ per month, it's a start.

We need to triple that petition - get 33,000.

Okay... everyone, if everyone who has signed a petition, posted here, gets on facebook and asks 3 friends to sign, 3 friends to like the facebook link, we can push this through.

This is becoming a numbers game. Let's get them some firepower.

We're gamers people.

Let's generate some Agro out there and pull them off our squishies so they can get the job done.

POST. SIGN. POST. ASK 3 PEOPLE. Wash Rinse Repeat. We need to start farming supporters. This is what we do. Stop wishing for success, and let's get on with the job of making it.

Who's handling the PR for the release?

I'm a journalist and marketing kid, professionally, so I'm just curious. Navy-trained and collegiate idealized.

It's not quite the same situation besides the obvious way.

Cryptic wasn't owned by NCSoft and they had something they could sell off to NCSoft to get more capital to start off on their other project. And the IP they sold was generating about $25mil/year at the time of their negotiations...right now it's looking to generate about $10mil this year.

Haven't checked how that crowd-sourcing effort some have started is doing right now but the petition so far is only 11k...unless all those are willing to donate a lot of money, not sure it would be enough unless the PS execs have a lot of money to chip into the pot also.

My pessimistic side is thinking if anything comes out of it at all, it might just be a revision of their exit strategy but there would still be a closure.

Maybe instead of just a petition, perhaps add a pledge along with it?

I don't mean whip out a credit card right now but maybe have a spot to add a monetary value each person who signs it can pledge how much they would be willing to donate and have that total counter up front.

Maybe that would be more convincing to have a large monetary amount NCSoft can see even if it's just a pledge and not actual funds yet.

Indeed. I would happily lend my expertise in marketing and communications to make the press release the best possible.

Seriously, at the very least, use her as a contractor. There are a few of us out here who can match her passion for the game, but virtually none with her talents.
