Though maybe that wouldn't have even worked. The closest thing I can compare to this is probably "Southern Pride." As a Northerner I had been taught that it more or less means, "We fly Confederate flags because we're still butthurt that we lost our slaves." The more time I actually spent down there though, one day it just suddenly clicked for me and made sense. I still couldn't explain it though. It just 'is'.
