Where are you going?
You'll probably not have heard of the games I'm going back to - Dofus, Wakfu, and Kingdom of Loathing. The first two are multi-platform games (Dofus runs in Adobe AIR, Wakfu in Java) with a turn-based strategic battle system (think Shining Force, Tactics Ogre, or Final Fantasy Tactics, except you only control your own character), the third is a silly but surprisingly deep browser-based game with a great community. (I used to think KoL's community was the best, until I came here). Dofus does have a great English Community Manager, though.
All three games are also published by their developers (Dofus and Wakfu by Ankama Games; Kingdom of Loathing by Asymmetric LLC, which is really just a half-dozen actual employees and a larger team of volunteers for internal playtesting and moderation), so there's no chance of the rug being pulled out from any of them.
And after this experience, that's important to me.
I'm probably going to at least give CO a try at some point, but I'm on a Mac, so that involves a lot of fiddling around with Wine and Crossover, which is why I haven't tried it yet.
And, you know, I never finished that game of Morrowind I was in the middle of. (Let alone Oblivion or, dare I say it, Skyrim)
And I still have a crapload of old SNES RPGs to play.
... yeah, I'm going to miss CoH a lot. I was playing it instead of all the other options I have available. But I do still have some options. Not anything close to equal (let alone better) options, but some.
Edited to add: I just remembered, my Avatar is from Dofus. That's the icon for the Lightning Strike spell. (Beware, Wikia link)

At this point, honestly, I don't know. I wasn't planning to get into MechWarrior: Tactics. But, as I will now have free cash...maybe.

Its not perfect, but right now its my only alternative.
I will not be giving NCSoft any more of my money once this game is killed; I feel this entire situation is UNNECESSARY and that's its been BEYOND poorly handled.
I have friends who may go to Diablo III, if they do I might follow them.
This is the first I've heard of a Game of Thrones MMO, that would be cool and I might try that. Unless its going to be an NCSoft game, which would kill that idea dead because they're not getting any more of my money.
NCSOft, the back of both my hands to you and the Curse of Cromwell on you.
I might check out Neverwinter Online, since BaBs is working on it.
Other than that, the only other MMO that even somewhat interested me is the Warhammer 40K MMO I caught a blurb about.
I'll probably do some console gaming here and there, and otherwise will be focusing on music and trying to get this book out of my head and onto paper.

The Mrs and I will be moving to The Secret World. Not quite a super-hero game, but the modern setting and the tin-foil hat conspiracy/lovecraftian storyline make a nice change of pace from all the standard medieval fantasy MMO fare.
I never stopped playing wow along side coh so I'll keep playing wow. Maybe i'll change my mind in the future but I can't even think about giving NCSoft money for GW2 right now. Champions is not my cup of tea. It just pales in comparison to COH and I'd feel dirty trying to recreate the COH experience there. DCUO is also not my cup of tea.
As for upcoming games that might catch my interest, nothing super hero related at all it seems Archeage looks promising for sandbox fantasy type play, Elder Scrolls Online also has potential if they can give me the same experience (gameplay and graphically, like rivers with currents that actually push my character down stream) as Skyrim in MMO form.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's anything of the caliber and style that COH provided. I can only pray another company buys the rights to it, private servers pop up, or NCSoft gives COH one last hurrah by releasing a stand alone version that can be played solo or via lan like Neverwinter Nights.

Where am I going? I have no *expletivedeleted* clue. My best friend since high school, who I don't get to see that often, started playing this game, and it was actually THIS GAME which got me to completely upgrade my obsolete, nearly ten-year old system, just so I could play this game. Which I was then able to do, and had an absolute, thrilling blast running around Paragon City.
Since April.
I mean, come on, if this game could instill that kind of passion in a relative short-termer like me, what about ppl that have been here since day 1?!
This is an unbelieveable...um..."D move". I mean, there's so many ways it could have been handled differently! If you want to close the company down, fine, it's your company. Release a few months of "Things are going bad, we don't know how long we can keep going", so that you don't give ppl *expletivedeleted* heart attacks when they sign in to the forums!
Where am I going? Honestly, probably back to my 360. I'm mainly a console gamer anyway, but since I created my first character, Angel of Retribution(as said, in April), I have literally only turned on my 360 like five times. And one of those was to watch an episode of Doctor Who.
But MMO-wise? Most likely, nowhere. I'm trying TOR, but CoH has spoiled me on speed and jumping. And I liked the story better the first time they did it, back in KOTOR.
Played FFXI back in the day, until all my friends quit. And I was only L22 in it. I'm L32 now with AoR, and my Peacebringer, Pale Fallen Angel, is L23, but...I work full-time, and I do have a life. There's almost no way I can get them both to L50 by November. So I guess I'll just hang around and keep fighting the good fight until then.
Its ok, Angel, you can cuss now. No mods.
I suggest using this newfound ability to give NCsoft a severe tongue lashing.
Yeah. NC can kiss my a s s.
I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
WoW and CO. I have a lifetime sub in CO so i dont have to spend money there, and a few friends in WoWland.
Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.
I am homeless. CoH was the perfect game for me. I need to be very careful what I game and how long I play since I have chronic RSI. CoH offered me just that. It was a casual gaming where you could so most of the action just using a keyboard. Even then, now and then I made the mistake of playing to long and suffered a few weeks of a painfull arm/shoulder/wrist as reward. Which left me afk from weeks to months.
Once I am over my current dissapointment, I will carefully browse around perhaps. Or maybe I will give up gaming alltogether, since most games are just to intensive for me.
But it won't be a NCSoft game, that is for sure.
As a Mac user, I guess it's back to WoW for me, as it's the only option.
Go? Not a ******* clue. I didn't play CoH because it was an MMO. I played CoH (god it hurts to type that in past tense...) because it is an amazing superhero game with the best community and developers on the planet. The only other MMO that ever even *slightly* tempted me was eve, and that solely due to the setting, even though I know it's about as completely unsuited to me as a *game* as anything could possibly be.
I guess I'll go play torchlight 2 when it comes out. Certainly never touching anything from ncsoft ever again. I can't think of a worse way they could have handled this.

This is what it means to be a tank!
Since there aren't too many native MMO options for OS X, I've defaulted to WoW. Blizzard has deigned to include a few features it that are reminiscent of CoH, such as transmogrification for character costume customization and AoE looting, but <sigh> it's just not the same.
Nonetheless, WoW has numerous advantages over CoH, not least among them, a corporate parent that isn't likely to leave the game, its devs, and its community high and dry in the name of corporate restructuring. NCSoft has obliterated any consumer confidence I had in it, so WildStar and GW2 are off the table.
Maybe I'll pick up LotRO or AoC once more, but certainly not CO again. I'm intrigued by the browser-based Unity-driven City of Steam, but that's still in alpha (and I'm fairly soured on F2P by this time). Perhaps it's time for something more innovative in MMO space, such as Day Z when it goes pro.
Good luck in the meanwhile to everyone in finding a new virtual world to call home and thanks for the great time here.
I played Everquest before Luclin came out; tried out Uru Online, but that never made it out of the Prologue. City of Heroes was something fun to do until World of Warcraft came out... yet I never even touched WoW when it finally made it live.
I tried Aion, Champions, DCUO, Star Trek Online, Tera, and Star Wars Old Republic. None of them held my interest as long as CoH did (though I did get a Trooper to max level, and see the meh ending for their storyline).
I've got Guild Wars 2, and since there's no monthly, I'll keep at that for a while. I've got nothing against Arenanet, and I don't even notice any NCSoft logos when loading up, so no personal issues for me, at least.
I've still got a sub on The Secret World. Fantastic storyline, sort of "it's... okay" mechanics. Would probably be better as a single-player game with an optional online component, but after Funcom lost half their staff, not sure how long that game is going on...
For now, I'll pop back here every now and then, at least as long as global chat works (since that's half the reason to play the game), and spend more of my time on GW2, and maybe some TSW, if they can fix some of the damn bugs. :P

I don't know if I'll be going anywhere. I do know that I canceled my WoW subscription. I used to use it as a getaway from CoH when I found myself becoming bored. It's fine as a change of pace but for a main game it can't hold my interest.
Hear that Blizzard? I canceled your game because of NCsoft canceling mine. Sick em big dog.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
I'd love to play another superhero MMO, but I found both CO and DCUO to be seriously lacking.
I might check out SWTOR again. I did enjoy the game for about the first month I played, but burned out pretty quickly.

I might check out CO again (@SnowGlobe) or SWOTOR until Elder Scrolls Online comes out. However I'm going to miss my Superhero MMO.
Mainly I'll see what my very close friends will go to and possibly go there.

DAMMIT. WHY IS IT NOT HURTING ANY LESS?
Going to spend the final weeks here running more Skype conference calls for time with my friends. I have other hobbies but none as intense as this. Gardening only goes so far.
Warning: nerdy fan-girl answer. I'll start shopping around in two phases. While I'm enjoying my final days here, I'll start looking around for a casual MMO to muck around in until "the next big thing" hits. By that, I'm not talking about a perfect game. I don't need a WOW-killer. Something fun, something that is very community oriented, something that may be rough but has promise. I started this game in June of 2004, my SG in December of 2004 and never took a break. It was my TV time... So. My checklist for "the next big thing": - Must be a new game. I want to be fresh and start with everyone else. - Gotta actually have missions and trials. Things like Second Life would not be my cup of tea. I need an adventure. - Must have a community setting. Where you can maintain a group larger than a team. Plus if it has private or group housing. - Leaning to a big name. I want the promise (even if a small one) of it lasting a few years and not just one of a million start ups that will die out quickly. - Prefer: Superhero, Real World/Modern, Sci-Fi .. (in that order). Just not an elves and dragon sort of girl. Any suggestions? Post away. |
I don't know what I'm going to do.
I think I'll try DCUO, but don't have much hopes for it. Champions just looks bad to me....
No MMO has hit me like CoX. DAoC was my first MMO and love, but CoX so far surpassed it.
well, i have a lt for champions, and its an ok diversion. I was actually looking forward to phantasy star online 2 next year, so by less than pleasant circumstances, looks like I will be on there a lot more. Really though,, think im unlikely to get as into a mmo again, they are time consuming and it really took a lot of the right circumstances to get me in here. beyond that the lack of results from your actions, coupled with the treadmill style leveling system and slow growth at higher levels, id have more fun with skyrim, skylanders giants and whatever nintendo throws at me, with the smattering of jrpgs.
and you know, i already paid for gw2 before this happned, i might eventually play it again since that gets ncsoft absolutely zero money, but i wont spend another cent in it. and id dissuade any friend on the fence from gettign it or any ncsoft game.
CO (If they fix most of the bugs), STO (Ditto), DCUO (If my install ever finishes updating), maybe Secret World.
Was going to play GW2 (and Wildstar when it came out), but after this news NCSoft is dead to me.
(TOR, Tera, WoW, D3, L1/2/E, and Aion are on my "Will Never Play, Ever" list.)
An MMO closure is definitely not a joke, and I have no intention of making light of it. And it can be a tough and emotional thing for players to go through, speaking from personal experience. And I know that it's often much harder on the developers than on the publisher. However, I also know that it doesn't necessarily turn you into a sad, depressed sack of tears for the rest of your life. People can move past it, and heal.
