Where are you going?

I've been playing around with ideas for a browser-based massively zero-player game for a while. I'll probably work on actually developing it now.

(Which setting should I go with: high fantasy, or pseudo-American Frontier?)

That's easy.

pseudo-fantasy frontier

I'll most definitely be playing Guild Wars 2. Although this does leave a bitter taste in my mouth about NCSoft, I still paid fifty smackaroos for it and I'm not going to let the tale of Spencer Winterson the thief die out too. I'll also probably consider picking up The Secret World as it seems to be pretty cool. And if any private servers start up to keep the City of Heroes alive, I'll definitely be on there.

Holy crap, I forgot about the Game of Thrones MMO. That better not suck.

I'll likely be going to Champions. It's not even a SHADOW compared to City of Heroes, but honestly, for me, it's the next best thing. I love customizing characters to insane lengths and, with City of Heroes fading away, that basically leaves Champions.

Either that or World of Warcraft. I would say The Old Republic, but I honestly can't get into it.

A few of my CoH friends are going to the likes of DDO and LotrO, so I may give them another bash.

But none of them will ever fill the void ...

I was doing some playthroughs of City of Heroes. Now they will serve as memories of a better time ...

I've been playing SW:The Old Republic on The Ebon Hawk Server. I'll probably keep playing that until it goes F2P.

After that... I don't know. I've played a number of other MMOs, but I kept coming back to City of Heroes. Once it's gone and I'm over SWTOR I don't know that I'll be playing any MMOs at all. All of the ones that are out now just seem so lackluster.

I was thinking about trying GW2 despite the fact that I'm no longer really interested in the fantasy genre, but that it's going to happen now.

Man, I was really looking forward to Issue 24 and the blaster changes.

Yeah. this is the game I thought I could always come back to. I play a bit, leave, play something else, and then come back.. and I always come back and spend money every couple months. I always have fun doing so. It filled a space in between everything else.. like nothing else. I knew that no matter what else happened, CoH would be there to fall back on because it's successful and making money and has a die hard fanbase.

Joke's on me

I have a lifetime sub on LOTRO, which is a game I feel comfortable in, but nothing like this game.

I'm very into TSW, but it's still early days for that world and I don't feel as secure in my future there as I, now ironically, did here and in LOTRO.

This is way worse for me than when Asheron's Call 2 got shut down.

Ugh.

I might go resub to Asheron's Call, my first MMO, since it's still getting monthly updates 13 years after it was released...

I can't believe this. Morgana is absolutely devastated, she's put so much time and imagination into this game, it's such a significant part of her life and now... NC are destroying it.

NC are dead to me unless they sell the IP to someone who actually gives a ****, I'd love for it to go to Turbine, they seem to understand the amount of love that their dedicated players put into the games they make and don't just **** can them because they don't reap supermoney.

I heartily look forward to someone hacking the code and putting up either private servers or hacked offline versions, that would absolutely make my day, especially if we got to see all the work Paragon put into it that hasn't been released yet.

Paragon, you guys rocked, just wish you'd been bought by a publisher that cared.

I have no idea where I'm going. I tried many other MMOs and can't enjoy them like I have CoH. It was my first and only MMO. I'll find something, I always have, but that something will *NEVER* be tied to NCSoft. Good thing I hadn't bought GW2 already, like I had planned to. I'm a very picky gamer, but also *very* loyal. NCSoft just got on my <pancake>list. If I have the chance, I'll also warn others away. Not that it matters, suits never realize they made a mistake until they're unemployed...and often not even then.

To everyone at Paragon who couldn't influence this decision, I wish you the best of luck in the future. I've never met any of you, but I suspect that I'd count you among my friends if I ever have the chance. If I ever see your names attached to another project, I'll buy it just because of who you are...maybe even two copies.

To the community, you guys kept me here when other game's communities scared me off. All of you are awesome. Even the ones who were on my ignore list (usually due to persistent pessimism) are still good, decent people.

I wonder how hard it would be for someone to covertly backup some server software and deliver it to an emulator developer anonymously? Just idle wondering, no rednames should consider this. They would probably be fired for something like that. Only Xhibit likes to lose his job while he loses his job.

NCSoft will be getting no more of my money and my GW2 purchase was halted the day of the announcement. I'm a loyal and very profitable customer. I hope to return to giving them all of my money, should CoH survive.

Torchlight 2 is where I'll be going, for a few months at least. It's made by the original team that made Diablo 1 & 2, and the release date is Sept 20, about three weeks from now. It's not an MMO but it is multiplayer for those who want company. Singleplayer as well for those who don't.

Then I'll probably boot up my old WoW account for a month... and ten minutes later remember why I left in the firstplace.

Apart from that I love board games, particularly the ones from a company called Flying Frog. But I live in the frickin' boonies and there aren't enough folks around to start up a good gaming group, so... yeah. I dunno either I guess.

I mean, everything else I've ever played were just games. This place was liking finding home.

I might go back to single player games. This is the only game I play and it's painful to see it go. Worse, no proper closure.

Where is everyone going? I'd like some ideas and some discussions on what games offer what.
I'm hanging it up for good. Meaning no more MMOs. I played this one game because it is one that actually kept me relativey playing and didnt care too much for dealing with other people but this community in game, I just kind of gotten used to them over the years. I'm not going through that again on another online game. I'm sticking to strictly non online none community based games now. It was fun while it lasted but time to move on soon.

I suppose I'll stay here until the end. After that, I don't know. I have some friends who play Star Wars, but I expect I'll just give up on MMOs after this.

Yeah I loved AC2 as well..

And AC was also my first MMO, I still adore it, but haven't played it in forever. I know they redid a lot of the skill system recently (in a good way).

Seconding the WoW thing. I'll probably pick up a month, and play for ten minutes before remembering that I hated everything they did in Cata and even more so in Mists.

I just want to comment on the loyalty to Paragon Studios that many players have in these forums. Many people I know will actually ban NC Soft for life and I hope it makes even the tiniest of dents into its profits.

Loved you guys. You are a great community and I think that's what makes this parting the hardest; it's knowing that there are really good people out there, friendly people. I'm a very jaded person and the community here is why I stuck around so long, come to think of it. I get to see the best in people on here and for the most part the player base seems like good intentioned people.

Keep it classy guys.

This was my first MMO, the only one that I have ever truly enjoyed. I played a little STO when it launched, but I honestly find it tedious and boring and in some ways, confusing. I can barely spend more than 30 minutes playing it before I am bored to tears, not to mention they butcher my favorite faction with their lousy in-game canon...not like I they're even available for play... *stops mindless babbling*

To be honest, I probably won't play an MMO again. Period. I've tried a few over the years and nothing has kept me interested like City of, likewise nothing has had a community that can even come close to matching this one. I already feel quite lost, knowing that my only real source of fun and friends (you try living in the middle of nowhere...) is being taken from me. But the real thing is the friends that I have come to cherish, logging in even after a crappy day and finding a friend to talk to and run missions with.

This is probably the end of the road for me, game wise. I probably won't migrate to any other games, maybe the occassional dabble with STO if/when my husband decides that he wants to play it.

I'll build my own City of Heroes.

I've bounced between here and The Old Republic a bit all of this year. I'll probably bounce back that way again at some point. Though I don't see it holding my attention for as long as this game has. So in the longer term, "where I'm going" is probably "back to consoles".

I might try "outside" at some point, too. I've heard it can be nice.

I think I'll step away from gaming for awhile (at least 6 months) and commit the energy to physicality, probably doing some basic yoga or perhaps Pilates. I do live in Colorado. I'll probably spend some time rediscovering the awesomeness of my state.

Since you asked:

I'm established in The Secret World (slow going, hard doing MMOs these days with a new baby) and am eagerly beta'ing Planetside 2 (IRON will paint the sands of Ishundar red with the blood of the Vanu once more).

However, I've elected to set both games aside completely, to run in COH until the skies go dark.

If you wish to find me, Facebook is a great thing (look up "Ivan Turgenev" in Washington, DC).

Cheers, all. If you find another home where we all can go, rope me in.

They currently have a three-day free trial. Give it a look. It's worth the consideration.

If I go to another MMO, it'll probably be back to EVE Online. It's about the furthest thing away from City of Heroes that exists, and I've still got my old character and all of my stuff.

Then again I already poured five years into EVE, and the only thing I really want to do there is slowly liquidate all of my assets in PVP, which is what I meant to do when I quit but CoH took up all my free MMO time instead.

I am not interested in starting from scratch in a new game, so... I'll probably be done with MMOs. Maybe I will go back to tabletop; adopt one of the many superhero systems and get with my SGmates and see if we can adapt it for CoH, just so that we'd have a system to continue to play out our characters' stories in.
