What's the one set you will never EVER use again?
/Trick Arrow for a MM or almost anything really. I took it for thematic reasons on my Demon MM. Fully IOd and T4 on all incarnates, this was still the weakest toon I've ever played since beta. I've had grav/emps that were better soloing than this monstrosity.
Only fully incarnated 50 I've ever deleted, after burning a bunch of freespecs to pillage IOs first. I even played this as a level-pacted pair with a friend so had twice the normal playtime with the toon. TA needs some serious attention. Oh and PeaceBringers. What a waste of dev time and my own. |
Wild Streak - Lv. 50(+3) Beast Mastery/Sonic Resonance Mastermind, Amnesty - Lv. 50 Staff Fighting/Dark Armor Stalker
So much hate for Willpower because it's "boring"... it's just a defense set that lets you focus on your attacks instead! I took it on my Street justice brute so I could worry about my offense and hit combo finishers when they'd be most effective. I love it on my Broadsword scrapper because redraw is never an issue. Back before Willpower, Regeneration was the go-to for scrappers who wanted "invisible" defenses (like natural-origin ones); I tried to go back to Regen after Willpower came out and just couldn't do it... there's so much work involved! Okay, maybe not that much work, but how much work is it to change the channel on your TV without the remote handy? For me it's like that: it's really not a problem, but I'm still a little annoyed by having to perform such a simple task the "hard way."
FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.
Super Strength. Rage crash drives me up the wall.
The problem is, /TA looks GREAT for animations and GREAT on paper for the stacking -RES of its own powers (plus the -RES from the Demons themselves). But it just doesn't work out that way in practice.
Force field. I had one and played it up to maybe level 20, it was the most boring character I've ever played.
Empathy. I have one at level 50, but I almost never play it.
I'm really torn on super reflexes. My single favorite character is a fire/sr scrapper, and I absolutely love him. Playing SR to 50 though was brutal.
Masterminds. I love the concept, I hate playing them. Every single one makes it into the low-mid 30s and gets deleted.

DA has insane psi resists and lots of mitigation though it is end heavy....great survivability
Any of the Auras have a damage aura and secondary effects which are more useful to my thinking
Invuln is what it is, the tanky scrapper secondary no problems surviving with this one...
Regen is what it is...massive amounts of regen with a tiny bit of resists...
Willpower...wishes it was one of the others...it has no defining trait except that you can play it lazy with that set...
Currently Playing:
Rage King - SS/Regen Brute (50+3)
Soulfire Darkness - Dark/Fire Tank (50+2)
Deaths Final Embrace - Kat/Dark Brute (50+3)

You were either not sufficiently experienced with that or you didn't get your level shifts IMHO. Only time I faceplant is if nearly everyone else already has, and I am one of the few left standing taking a mob worth of damage...
Mine is Willpower...it is so blah...nothing special...nothing to keep you engaged...it's just there...meh. I would never play empathy again either...I discovered I am not a buffer...I like to hurt baddies... |

Stone Armour, because Rooted... because Rooted.
SR, because Inv, Shield, EA, WP, Nin and Ice are just better with a little IO investment.

Thugs
Don't get me wrong though, thugs seem -awesome- and a lot of fun but..
I can't stand the concept, I've tried it because they seem like a great set by no matter how I try it I just can't find them cool to run around with.
When i first started playing around the end of 2008, I tried running stalkers. After 2 failed tries, I hated them. I tried once more months later and started having the same results. I got angry and started to play dirty with hit and run tactics. That's when it started getting fun. It seems you don't run a stalker like a scrapper. Since then i've perfected my stalker technique and stalker has went from most hated to one of my favorites. Because of that, I don't say 'never again' to anything.
Until they put the option into PB's and WS's to kill the squid and lobster forms i won't play em. i don't mind the mechanics of the sets, or the mechanics of the different forms, i just don't want to see em. just give me a "no animations in pve" option for the squid and lobster, and i'll be thrilled!
and i can't "play" MM's, too much time watching AI fight AI... just boring to me.
Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.
screw your joke, i want "FREEM"

1. Try Stalkers now on BETA they are...wow lol.
2. Try Ice Armor especially once you Get Icy Bastion makes you play like a Scrapper. Ice armor is now a nice mix of defense, -recharge/-dmg debuffing and massive Regen.
Psi assault for blasters, defenders or doms. I find it more painful than a root canal to watch it slowly, and tediously travel to a target.
"Hi, my name is Ail. I make people sick."
A partial selection from my 50's on Freedom: Ail = Ice/Traps, Luck = Street Justice/Super Reflexes Stalker, Mist = Bane, Pixy = Trick Arrow/Archery, Pure = Gravity/Energy, Smoke = Fire/Fire Dominator

ULTIMATE REGEN GUIDE I22
Energy Melee: Too much 'flash', only one AoE. The stun sounded great until the stunned foes stumbled out of melee range; I hate having to them chase down.
Kinetic Melee: The tier9 animation killed the set for me(I hand-wave-you-to-death!). The coolest animation is also the worst power: Repulsing torrent.
Stone Armor: Only tried it when Power customization hit, but Granite will(apparently) never get customization. Also having to really on -Fly, -Run powers for Mez protection? I don't like that. Also the armors are all weak outside Granite. The set needs some kind of Synergy system to make taking the other armors worth while.
Stalkers sets: They all get gutted to nerf AoE attacks into single target, and add their one trick circus of Assassin Stirke, Placate and Hide. (If Hide and Placate are standard for each stalker why aren't they inherent?) Even with the i22 update, I'm unlikely to play them. They're Scrappers that dropped out of Scrap-School.
Necromany: Zombie. vomit. no.
Spines: Completely grosses me out. I can't stand to be near characters that leave Quills on all the time.
The plastic tips at the end of shoelaces are called aglets. Their true purpose is sinister.
--The Question, JLU
Deranged,
Necro/poison/leviathan is where its AT. You join your zombies in puking on your foes, by laying into the bad guys with neurotoxic breath and bile spray. Yay!

I dont understand the dislike for presence, though certainly the pool powers are not as effective as arch type. I do get it, sometimes, for scrappers, as opposed to a single target taunt they get. Not arguing, but might as well ask.
/stone.... I cant get into it. I am a concept player, so it is highly unlikely I will "never" use any set, but I have deleted every stone tank I ever made. It is ugly, it changes the look of the toon (if I wanted the toon to look like that, I would have created it to look like that), and the negatives seem to slow my play down waaaaaay too much. I know, get tp....blah....not my favorite travel power, and again, how many concepts can one come up with for teleporting rock people.
"Look mah, its a rock person!"
"Careful Jr, we know they all teleport, and we will never forget that tragic accident that took your paw away from us."
While I do have a regen at 50, that was done back in the days of toggle IH. I've tried many times since to do regen builds, and consistently can't stand the result. I'm not willing to shell out the influence to make it durable enough, when I can do a lot more on the cheap with other sets.
Of course the latest one really did it with a TW/Regen brute when both the squishiness coupled with redraw made it just not worth the time. Made it to 44 on that alt, but then looking at the cost to make it not die like a mayfly has me considering re-rolling as WP or maybe EA.
Never played empathy. Never will. I don't see it as comic booky. The set is plenty useful, and I've certainly seen it used well. It's just not my bag.
Too many alts to list.
Battle Axe, War Mace, Broadsword, and Katana.
I didn't like any of those except Katana. I just have way too many katana toons >_>; |
I am pretty sure any time I spent trying to start up a new broadsword character would just make me want to play either my main, or my stalker alt of the same character.
That said, I do think this is a very interesting and informative thread. I'm glad to see something other than "I don't play x power set because lol it sucks (is underpowered)."
Still hate the visit Winscott mission- make it dropable, have it give actual exp or remove it altogether. PS- Down knows who you are.
J/ Wilde/ / AIL - Celebrating five years!
Force Field. Its too far on the defensive multiplier side vs. offensive multiplier side of support to make it very interesting at high levels in the current game. I'd play Cold (and tinker with the graphics on the shields to make them less obtrusive) instead, or worst case Sonic.
I would also have said Gravity, but at least its getting a look.
Ice control/sonic. I felt more like an inconvenience to the enemy, rather than a real source of control and I was always sucking down blues to do it.
/Devices on blasters. Seriously. Screw devices.
Empathy... My playstyle is to aggressive to be standing in the background buffing.
