What's the one set you will never EVER use again?
There are a few sets that I'm disinclined to play in the foreseeable future, not that I consider them particularly poor sets but just that I've taken them to L50 once and they don't feel like they'd have much "replay value" compared to others. I like my kin melee scrapper but it will likely be a long time before I roll another one.
The set I refuse to touch until its revamped is /devices. Its not a well-constructed set, made all the worse by being a poor fit for my personal playing style.
Umber's Hall of Heroes & Villains
Great thread topic !
Devices : I had an Energy-Device blaster to 47 once, deleted and remade because I hated the whole idea that I only used 3 powers from the secondary, and one of them was forced to take, or else I would have skipped.
ALL MASTERMINDS : Great concept, terrible implemention. Cannot stand grouping with them either. Its very annoying having to push and shove your way through a mass of pets to keep up with the lead tank. Have actually had to sit in a tunnel and miss an entire battle because the 3 MM pet hoard in our group would not let me pass.
Energy Melee, Electric Control : Love the sets, cannot stand the noise they make.
Illusion Control : not enough control and too many pets.
Peacebringer and Warshades : Wanted to love them, but hate Quantums with a PASSION
Spines, Thorny Assault : pukey green particles, spikes and thorns, just not my style, even though I like plant control alot, go figure
Any powerset or Power that overshadows my costume : Ice Armor, Stone Armor etc..
Not too keen on Stalkers, Energy Aura, Dark Armor, either
Most weapon sets : Loved weapon sets in the begining, but find less interest in them these days, so been thinking of adding them all to the don't bother pile. But I love Shields :/ and have high hopes for Staff Melee.
Stone Melee, Earth Assault : Big Hammers, no thanks. Purchased Titan Weapons on a whim and then realized it was not for me either.
Sorry, long list, but after 7 years, I have played most everything enough to determine if it will ever get played again.
BIOSPARK :: DARKTHORN :: SKYGUARD :: WILDMAGE
HEATSINK :: FASTHAND :: POWERCELL :: RUNESTAFF
You should consider another thread titled : Which powerset would/have you played more than once ?

Yeah but so what - it's not like defenders die like mad because they out-aggro other ATs. I suppose if you choose a team-oriented class to solo the game with then Traps might be for you. That's how I see it anyway.
|
I can solo 4/8 and AVs with all my Traps toons ( mm, corruptor, defender ) which include my AR Traps Defender. But then again just about all my solo and team oriented classes can at least solo 4/8 and not just traps.
Just goes to show you how different each persons perspective about power sets, Arch Types and play styles are.

I love the one character I have that has it, but I feel no desire to ever play it again on a different character.

This game has classes oriented as solo or teaming ?

You might know me as FlintEastwood now on Freedom
I've got a dual blade/invulnerability scrapper I haven't been that happy with and am thinking of deleting and re-rolling as something else, just not all that thrilled with Dual Blades. The combo system is ok, but so far it's the only primary power set I've tried where I just felt like I wasn't that strong.
With the word 'again' I feel compelled to consider power sets I have used.
And at the moment, there's just one: Fire Melee. There's a power that exists in Fire Melee (I forget what it's called) that looks like my character is reaching out and going "coochie coochie coo" like my character is attempting to tickle my foe with fire. |

It looks very much like your character is gently placing the fire on their enemy.
Scorch now has an animation that looks very similar to Power Thrust (it might even be the same animation, not sure)

Dull Blades - Having a secondary effect that fails 1 out of 7 times in the best conditions... blech.
Having typed this, I just realized I had a nascent idea for a DB/Elec Scrapper, and leveraging enough +Rech for the BF>AS>SS>AS> Chain...
So, none?
Although I doubt I'll ever re-roll Empathy... hard to beat the concept of my Ill/Emp that's sitting dusty and unplayed at 50.

Any Blaster secondary:
I'm probably done with blasters as a set.. But I've thought that before.
Peacebringers and Warshades:
Probably not gonna get made again as long as the ones I have sit dusty and un-logged in in over 200 days.
And won't likely use again, since I won't likely ever use it a first time
Street Justice: Pretty meh looking to me. Then again, if the change the animations I may give it a try.
Titan Weapons: Looks way too silly for me, as is. If perhaps they changed the animations, and the posture/stance, and added in a weapon choice like a Zweihänder or Claymore with realistic proportions, then there is an outside chance I might play it, but those changes aren't likely in the near future.
Pain Domination:
Really didn't feel this set. Trying hard to get my one Pain Corr to 50, but if/when that ever happens, I think I'm retired from this set, too.
Edit: Gotta say, I also agree with Errant, Dual Blades is really unlikely, too. The failure rate of the secondary effect just means the set always feels like it's underperforming, even if that isn't the case.
...Looks over his many characters to play tonight, hmmm who will it be?? Ms. Bubbles? I got you to 32 Forcefield defender! "Delete-eeet" Made two Dual pistols...delete-eet. Three empaths...delete-eet, Storm..who? Delete. The Presence Pool has been wiped from my mind like Robo Cop 3. I dont even notice it when making characters. That pool shouldnt even be an option
MA/REGEN: 50th Shadowgeist
SHLD/SS: 50th Justice Machine

Assault Rifle.
It just doesn't speak to me creatively. Whenever I come up with a concept that's all "yeah! that could use a rifle" I get bored with the concept very quickly. Don't get me wrong, apart from "creative differences" I see nothing wrong with the set.
(Not sure why but Dual Pistols speaks more to me; I keep planning on making a DP character)
The game ends at 50. Smilegasm
Do not ever give Mind Control a pet. We need more control sets without pets.
My characters are not "toons". They are all project characters, though.

Masterminds.
I forced myself every day to log into my lone MM to simply tell myself one day that I had an MM 50. Never again. So boring. |
I'm getting close to the same dislike of Defenders and Corruptors. They just don't do enough damage for me, and being able to debuff or buff isn't an obvious enough bonus to me for playing them.

Although they don't fall under 'never EVER':
Sets that have more 'target ally' powers than 'target enemy' powers just don't fit with my playing style.
(The only exception here is Masterminds, but even then it gets wearying)

Devices. I see no reason to make a /Devices toon when Traps is so much better and fun and Corrs are great as well.
Probobly Empathy
Somehow I don't like the single target buffs, when playing it I could not shake the feeling that I could just play a kinetics character and easily buff the entire team to new levels of awesomeness instead of spending time and energy trying to keep Fortitude up on as many people as possible, bleh.
Spines... Tried it. Hated it. A lot.
Illusion... It just bored me to tears.
KM on a Scrapper... I love my KM stalker dearly and have no complaints about my KM tank, but getting a KM scrap to 50 was enough of a pain to make me say "Never again!"
Plant control... I don't care how effective it is. It's a butt-ugly set with some of the least attractive powers and pets in the game.
Dark Armor... Another "tried it and hated it". I deleted that version of Ke'khali at 38.
Titan Weapons... Very cool idea, but the momentum mechanics and the resulting jerky, stop-and-go attack animations drove me absolutely crazy.
Warshades... I love my Peacebringers, but never really "got" my 'Shade. I found playing her to be pretty much the opposite of fun.

Logged my Warshade in yesterday (First time in a while) to finally complete their journey back to full Hero. Nearly ripped my hair out. I just can't get with the vampiric nature of the buffs. "Gotta make sure I don't ashtray all the minions so I have the damage/Resistance to beat/survive this boss. But I gotta kill something so I can heal and bring out some pets." The difference between a buffed Warshade and baseline performance is just too big. Way too much roller coaster for me.
Peacebringers, on the other hand, are my favorite AT. They've got all the tools they need and can use 'em without any specific conditions. Want more damage? Hit a power. Want more Resistance? Hit a power. No enemies or bodies around? Not a problem. Sure, they don't peak as high as Warshades do but I'd much rather have the consistent performance regardless of the circumstances.
Wanna play a Peacebringer? Don't believe the hype. Check out my guide and get the real truth:
PEACEBRINGERS SUCK!!! (Now fully up to date for i21+ )
Stone armor. I tried 3 times, but not since before CoV came out. I can't play the set with rooted as it is. The set still has nonsense mechanics from the begining of the game.
/fire for blasters. made two characters, a long time ago. maybe if they made the toggle auras suppress instead of detoggle when I get hit with a 1 second duration mag 1 stun i would feel differently.
/elec for blasters. i hate blapping.
/dark for blasters. I havent even made one of these, and i already know just from looking at it I wont like it, because i hate blapping.
elec blast. I made one in I2. I tried it again quite recently. it is just too gimp. why doesnt tesla cage do any dmg? Why havent the devs updated the avatar for VS from launch? Why wont they let VS have more then one power? It is really a shame, I really enjoy the graphic FX of the set.
broadsword. god this set is boring. i dont care how many fancy new weopon skins they make for it, the set animations and mechanics are just plain ol button mash. its the kind of set you can put your character on autofollow on a tank and watch Tv while pressing 1-3-2-4-1-2-1-etc-etc with a free hand.

I do like my energy/dev blaster and it's still my main badger and all-around most played character, but I don't think I'd ever actually level one up from scratch again. At least not without some significant work done on the set.
Edit: To clarify, it's /devices that needs work.
