  1. Xarei,

Between the two, I think Electric is better. I think the range that the chain knockdown and chain confuse work at are also the range in which the heal cone will be convenient. Then once you get some confuse and stuff going on, you can move in and do PBAOE buffs, and rock everything from melee range, and then you can move out and in as needed.

Ice would be crazy-high on endurance costs, and while the AA + Entangling might be neat, I dont think it would be as safe as an Ice/Rad doing the same since the Spores power isnt quite as good on the numbers. Also, Nature doesnt have much control really, and Ice (IMO) is one of those sets that needs a bit of extra control from the secondary. Not that the heals and regen and stuff wouldnt be good, but running the AA and Entangle toggles without being able to floor foe accuracy ... it could get tedious. Not that you couldnt build for defense but ...

I dunno. I just think electric has a lot more control. That targeted confuse is gold, in my opinion, and frankly so is the targeted knockdown. I find it under-rated. Plus you have the best sleep in the game and a typical long recharge AOE hold.

As for myself, I made Dark/Nature, Fire/Nature, and Earth/Nature. I may also make Illusion/Nature. My Earth/Nature is the one I am working on now, and it is very awesome so far. I am leveling fairly slowly, and I am only level 19, but its tons of fun, and I am super happy with my endgame build.

  2. I went a bit of a different route with my build. I still plan to be in melee range running Hot Feet and Choking ... I mean Entangling Aura but I shot for high-ish ranged defense. If I lead with Smoke in my build, I think I am 2% from the ranged cap or so. I could then more or less throw Flashfires in relative safety, run in while activating my -hitdebuff aura, and then as long as I re-apply Smoke every 30 seconds or so, if needed, my melee and s/l will basically be just shy of the cap.

I will post a build optimized for recharge using Spiritual, but in a way I almost think I might go for Vigor as well and play with both, since during my 10 second downtime window on Overgrowth (including the 3 second cast time plus my actual 7 second downtime) I bet the end drain is crazy.

There are a few things I might change. I could pull a slot from Hot Feet, and run with a Dam/End, Acc/Dam/End, and a purple Dam/End all with +5 boosters, then I could put a slot on Wild Growth to put a slot there, to make room for the Gladiator proc. Or, I'd put the Gladiator in Tough and move the Steadfast to Wild Growth. And I could put the perf shifter in Lifegiving Spores. Or whatever.

Anyway, I think a lot of your powers are underslotted or slotted in an awkward way. If nothing else, maybe my build will show you some alternate ways to slot.

  3. Basically.

I had been wanting to make an Earth/Dark Dominator for some time, and when I found myself making the character, I just kinda clicked through "Magic" out of habit, but then I was like "man I should really do something other than Magic". So the idea popped into my head to play a character that had power Mimicry as a mutant power, and that the mutant power was diverse enough to copy any origin power. But of course, switching power sets on the fly isnt part of COX so I thought of the idea of having the first powers he was exposed to getting "burned in" or "locked in". I decided that the reason this happens is that the first power sources he was exposed to were epic/powerful/omega-class characters. So he got overloaded and cant ever change again.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I would have liked for an epic class Earth controller to be in the lore, but Faultline II and Ghost Widow will suffice. Or I dunno, maybe the character witnessed a negotiation or tense stand-off between GW and a massively powerful Earth CoT Mage. I will think about it.

    I appreciate all the replies!

    Lewis
  4. Thanks! I expect the new Faultline will suffice. I just need for my character to have witnessed an Earth Controller (or thereabouts) fighting against (or even simply conversing with/being in the presence of) a Dark Blast/Darkness type character, as part of his backstory. Needs to be possible in the present time.

So I will go with Faultline (II) and Ghost Widow.

    Thanks!

    Lewis
  5. What kind of Earth Powers does the new Faultline have?

Are there any CoT mages that are big shots in any of the story lines?

I guess if worse comes to worse, I could use one of my own Earth Controllers as part of my little story line.

    Grr .....

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  6. All,

I am planning an alt who needs to have a connection to a powerful Earth Controller. No, not YOUR powerful +4 shifted Earth/Storm controller. I mean someone in the lore. I am not looking for random CoT mages or DE casters/monsters. I am hoping that there are some genuine Earth Controllers of epic/signature/powerful standing that I can use in my origin.

Only, on the channel I frequent, nobody could really think of any. Slate was mentioned, whoever that is, but he or she seems to be weak. Terra was mentioned, but seems to me Terra was as much or more DE/Plant/Gross-nasty as anything else and Earth powers were secondary. Someone mentioned Faultline but thats in the past as I recall.

Are there any powerful Earth Controllers in the COX game Lore that one could build a character history around. I need someone of singular power, if possible, like on a Ghost Widow or Signature level. Hero preferred, Villain accepted.

    Are there any?

As a side question, what are the top 3 Dark Blast/Assault characters in the Lore? I guess Ghost Widow is the obvious one, and she is the "other" epic/powerful character I need for my origin. But who would the next 2 most powerful (hero or villain) dark blast/assault characters be?

  7. Are the resist IO changes really that nice?

I mean, I've seen them, and maybe its because I favor recharge and defense on all my characters, but nothing I've seen particularly makes me want to go out of my way to do weird stuff like drop tough and pick up other set resistances, or even focus on the resistances stacking in from other sets. Where it happens, it happens, but I still plan to chase recharge, defense, and regen depending on what character I am playing.

I guess I will just have to look at some builds in MIDS to see what the dealio is.

The Mastermind Attuned IO set is fine, I guess. But one key thing to remember about sets is this:

There is no reason to chase set bonuses you don't want.

So then the question becomes, what set bonuses should you want?

That is where opinion starts to vary, and that is where you have to decide what your goals are. But putting in the purple pet set or the MM ATIO set or a Luck of the Gambler set ... simply because they are "good" ... well that doesn't mean anything. Those sets all provide very different bonuses. Having a little bit of 20 different little bonuses isnt really going to do much.

So in my case, since the primary concern of /Force Fields is defense, I focused on Defense. Now, it is true that one of the bonuses for the MM ATIO set is AOE defense for pets, and you could certainly try to factor that in. However, I personally value my OWN defense above my pets' defense, though I like to boost both. If you look at the character "totals" in MIDS, the Ranged and AOE defense for the player are both around 45%, which is the "soft cap" that is so nice to hit (it leaves most foes with only about a 5% chance to hit you. 50% base chance, minus 45% which is the soft cap the game allows, leaving a 5% chance, at least in a very quick crude description. It can get more complicated than that in reality).

Now, I could certainly focus more on the defense of my pets. With the build I posted, since I was trying to keep the pool powers and epics you selected, I had some constraints. I could have put the Edict of the Master defense IO for pets in one of my pets (affects all of them) and the MM ATIO in another pet. BUT THE DOWNSIDE to that is that then I would lose a LOT of my personal defense. I decided that for the build I would post, I would focus on MY defense.

That is why I didn't take the MM ATIO. The goals I selected for the build were not really helped by that set. So I took a different set.

There are always other approaches you can take. If I were trying to min-max defense values, I would plan on becoming a villain at some point and taking the Mace Mastery Pool from Black Scorpion's patron arc (which you can do as a villain at level 35+). That way, my smashing/lethal defense would also be higher if I took Scorpion shield instead of bonfire, and then I could also squeeze in Power Boost which more or less doubles (or close to double) the power of certain abilities for a short time. So you could click power boost and then cast deflection shield and insulation shield on your pets for even better defenses, all while still maintaining personal defenses. The trade-off would be that you wouldnt have as much area damage.

A different player might find a way to work in Aid Other and Aid Self so you can heal your pets. It is commonly done. I could have done so. There are always options.

So in a way, while I provided a build, it was just to show one thing that CAN be done. You might not know what you WANT to do until you've done it. What that means is, sure, you can have a build in mind as you play, but dont worry about it TOO much. As you get more experience, you will find your own preferences and then you'll have the ability to more effectively implement your choices, and you'll be able to focus your questions better. Eventually instead of asking "What do I do?" you will be able to ask "I want to aim for goal X, is it a better approach to do this, or to do that?"

You may even decide to try a different primary or a different secondary at some point.

So get out there, saddle up, summon some wolves, and see how it goes.

    Have fun!

  9. Here is a build that might be more serviceable. It would work well enough in terms of slot placement and power picks as you level. However, you can either have SOs or IOs in the slots eventually. This is one possible IO build for the end-game. For better or worse, I stuck with the power pools and epics that you had selected.

I will say that since the Beasts cant really heal themselves, you could always consider a build with Aid Self and Aid Other. As it is, you have to re-summon, or rely on defense and healing/regen or whatever it is from Fortify Pack (and I am not that familiar on whether its good or not).

But what the heck, here is a build that might help, in which I shot for end-game defense soft-capping (just barely) for you.

Those points are all nuances, except for the Farsight point, which I think is important.
I will look into going for all LOTGs for the bonus. I could also think of a way to sneak a Kismst in the build.

As for the fact that I am skipping Power Boost and going with Heat Mastery, it is a character concept thing. This character is intended to emulate my Pathfinder (tabletop RPG) goblin sorcerer, who focuses in Summons and on Fireball.

I could possibly switch Fire Blast to Bonfire tho, I hadnt thought of that. That would let me get some AOE damage (in addition to my Fireball and my Ravens) and that'd probably be enough to focus the Distortion Field on the control/recharge aspect. That saves me a slot for a Kismet, and I can still switch the 2 Red Fortunes out to LOTGs, which should compensate for the accuracy loss in Fire Blast and still get me up to a good value for Time Crawl (in terms of chance to hit).

Thanks to everyone here for all the comments. Also, I have no idea if Farsight stacks. I assume not though, at least not from the same caster. But that's just an assumption. But if it did stack, you'd think you'd hear more about that.

Here is my modified build. How does it look now?

  11. All,

What would be the better way to slot Distortion Field on a Beast/Time/Fire mastermind? Should I go for damage procs or non-damage procs?

Isnt Beast Mastery light on AOE damage? From that perspective, I could see going with 2 recharge IOs, 3 damage, and then a 4th either as damage (at level 50) or maybe (pre 50) the hold proc or an end reducer.

But from the perspective of global recharge and ranged defense, I could see 4-slotting Basilisk's gaze (including the proc) and then I would throw another recharge proc and the hold proc in there for the proc crowd control action.

Which would be the best approach?

Below, I will post my build for reference.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

  12. I found Fire/TA painful to play at times, but eventually it matured quite well. Part of my issue was that I played mine up when the set was at its most bugged.

Here is the build I have on live. Fire/TA was my second level 50 Fire Controller (after Fire/Sonic) and so I have a soft spot in my heart for her, and therefore, I more or less tricked her out. I still havent got around to doing the incarnate stuff on her yet, so actually she doesnt have cardiac. But otherwise, this is my build.

  13. Thanks for the replies, I appreciate them!

  14. All,

Cheers to the Devs. I have lost track on all the confirmed powersets that are coming out. They are cranking them out so much (and so many announcements come in other venues such as conventions etc) that I cant keep track.

    Is there a comprehensive list?

    I know about:

    Nature Affinity
Bio Armor (does it have some different name now?)
    Martial Combat
    Martial Assault

I think I heard about some others, but I have lost track. What are the others that have come out as being available soon?

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  15. Sounds good. I plan to make a Fire/Martial build. Ooh, thats a good pun too, for people who like pun names!
  16. Good stuff! I can't want to make a Fire Control / Martial Assault Dominator!

Also, Zwillinger is just like me! I also prefer Controllers and Brutes!

  17. I put bonfire in there simply because if you managed to do the summer event (I think it is still going on until July 31) and you got the Overwhelming knockdown proc, its good to put it in bonfire. Also, unlike a lot of other people, I was actually taking and using Bonfire a lot anyway, even before this proc, and usually I put damage in it, despite the fact that without the proc, it knocks everything back.

But if there is a skippable power and any bonus slots to steal from somewhere, it would be Bonfire.

Anyway, I am not 100% sure how Catalysts drop. I got all mine by buying a bunch of booster packs. But i know that you can earn them in normal game play (assuming you are VIP and can get inventions and do all the cool stuff). But on the controllers I tweaked out, I either got Will of the Controller from the booster cards or else I bought them on the market, and I used some catalysts that dropped to boost a couple of my character's Attuned sets (Will of the controller) to the higher values. Mainly, I tweaked out my Fire/Storm and Fire/Dark controllers.

Even if you dont enhance the Will of the Controller with catalysts, you are still over 40% def to ranged. Heck even without the PVP IO and with just the normal (non-superior) WotController, you'd be floating at 40%, which means if you do incarnate stuff, you could get the incarnate power that gives 5% defense for 120 seconds and recharges in the same time frame.

So there are a bunch of options. This was just a framework/first cut.

And keep in mind that smoke is about like having 6% defense if you use it. Basically, the -tohit stacks in effectiveness with having good defense. So there is a lot of wiggle room in the build for having the equivalent of softcapping.

The -tohit from Radiation Infection from Rad Emission is also a big part (though not all) of why people say def capping isnt that big a deal on a Fire/Rad.

But frankly I am with you. I like to shoot for lots of ranged defense (or even other types if I can .... Stormies and Sonic controllers are good for softcapping lots of stuff) AND THEN stack even more -tohit on top. I find it relaxing. So in a way, Fire/Rad is a good choice for you since you'll have the tools to simulate def capping (RI and smoke) while getting up to the level where you can actually slot for it and cap out without using powers (endgame).

EDIT: My tactic for Flashfire is usually only that I open with it, and then use the period where the foes are stunned to toggle on my Radiation Infection (to lower their accuracy) and then move in with Hot Feet, Containment (Fire Cages), Choking Cloud, etc. Effectively, Flashfires (or Smoke + Flashfires) is my alpha-retaliation-mitigation strategy that I use as an opener to achieve control of any fight as much as I can. Bonfire is used more to block corners, or maybe to use to damage a boss or other bad guy that is immune to knockback. Also with the Overwhelming Force proc, it can be more conveniently used as a damage source.

    Hope that was helpful.

    Lewis
  18. OP,

I played my Fire/Rad back up to 50 on SOs, so any kind of ranged capping is more or less totally extraneous. Still, if you wanted a perma-hasten Fire/Rad/Fire at the ranged defense cap, it can be done. Here is one that is at 44%. It does use 10 enhancement boosters on the 2 Hasten slots, and it does use the gladiator 3% defense PVP IO, and it uses Will of the Controller with 6 catalysts, and it is otherwise expensive as well. But if you were committed to just doing a cool build that you enjoy with a max level Fire/Rad/Fire controller, you can.

You can do even better than the build below, certainly. I could put the purple set in Fireball. I could use 15 enhancement boosters to boost the first 3 slots in Fire Blast so that I could move a slot to super speed and pick up 1.25% more ranged def to hit the cap. Etc, etc. You can always make a build more suited to your goals. But here is a build that is a good first (expensive) stab at hitting the ranged def cap without sacrificing much if anything (other than time and influence). If you also use Smoke and Radiation Infection (which are in the build) then you can be even harder to hit.

Whatever you decide to do, a Fire/Rad controller is a joyful build. Have fun!

  19. I am not considering blasters of any kind. I more or less loathe them. I hate all blaster secondaries (except Ice and, oddly, Devices) and even those are only barely adequate. Also, I am terrible at playing blasters. I don't have the right mindset for them.

I think I have decided to just go with Archery/Storm, even though I end up rocking the Storm Summoning a little too often. But I love it. I am just going to hope that I can adjust the sets so that the redraw is minimal, in terms of what order I deploy powers.

    Thanks for the replies!

    Lewis
  20. Yeah, I already have a FF/Beam, so I am set there.

I do love both Dark Miasma and Storm summoning. I just worry that I will get burnout there, because I do them so much.

    Lewis
  21. Well rats. Now it is doing it on my mobile to all 3 accounts, so I am stuck back where I was.

May have to clear all my cache and stuff but then I will have to remember my passwords on other sites all over again.

    Bah, humbug!

    Lewis
  22. I think I will go with this build. I know that Snipes are about to be improved but I dont have any interest in Moonbeam regardless.

  23. I normally prefer the higher defense of Defenders, but in a way, I want to get my attacks sooner, and have longer to space out the slots on the Traps side, and I am actually quite happy with the defense numbers I seem to be able to get endgame even on a Corruptor. Not incarnate softcap (other than melee) but still good.

So I think I am leaning towards Corruptor.

    Thanks!

    Lewis
  24. Cool. I think I would like the combo.

If I combined Dark with Traps, should I be a Defender or a Corruptor?

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  25. All,

I am trying to make a Dark Blast character. I dislike Blasters. I used to have a Storm/Dark Defender who I liked, but I had not touched her in years, and I am kinda burned out on Storm, and I needed the name, so I deleted her.

So I kinda want to get back into Dark Blast and add one to my stable. Any suggestions on a DEF or COR set to pair this with, and whether to be a DEF or COR?

I think the sets that interest me most right now are Force Fields (always), Time (meh, but not opposed), and Traps (greatest interest).

The sets that interest me the least are Trick Arrow, Sonic, and Dark Miasma (I dont like matching powersets).

Any suggestions? Dark/Traps and Traps/Dark are appealing to me because they seem wacky, and I like wacky, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any strong feelings or warnings about power sets or DEF vs COR.

    Thanks,

    Lewis
