"I'm soloing" ... "ur selfish"
I just make multiple tabs so I can easily decide what I want to listen to. I don't go back and check the other sets of tabs typically; I switch what frame of mind I am in for how much communication, and exclusively use those tabs on my chat windows for a while.
This is especially useful for the various LFG channels, so I only have to look at them when I'm trying to find a team. |
Ever since I put "No farms or PL teams" as my LFT comment, I haven't gotten any invites in a couple years.
Seriously, though, I'm just on /hide and have my flag set to "not looking". If I want to team, I'll seek one out.

Then I'm selfish sometimes. Sometimes I need to be left alone to do something or have little time or constant intteruptions.
I've ran into similar situations before. I've caught alot of flak when trying to get enough people together for trying to solo tf's.
|
I have no problem with a group of players who need a body or two to get an ITF going, and am glad to help them out. I also think the required minimums on many of the TFs need to be adjusted downwards. But it's still pretty selfish for one person to make up to seven other people stand around waiting so that one person can get bragging rights for soloing a TF.
Samuel is minding his own business and being badgered by people who want to team with him. People who solo TFs badger other people to sacrifice their time in order to stroke their own egos.

De minimis non curat Lex Luthor.
I solo a lot due to distractions and in general just wanting to take my time.
I had a rash of "can I join" requests, all in the same week, shortly after Issue 20. Upon my reply that I was soloing, most would either not send anything back or I'd get an "K, have fun" reply. This one guy... He sent the tell asking if he could join my team, with an invite appearing as soon as I got the tell. I declined the invite and told them I wasn't on a team. They sent another invite and replied with "U could be with me." I declined the invite and explained that I appreciated the offer but wasn't really doing much, had laundry going etc. 10 minutes later I get another invite popup and tell from them. I'm guessing they either didn't realize they'd already talked to me (going down the list) or were trolling. I replied with "Still soloing " They send yet another invite and at this piont I just accept it. I'm a bit more frustrated than I should be so I don't say anything in Team. I was in the process of upgrading enhancements so I just kept doing what I was doing. A few minutes later he appears in the shop. I compliment him on his concept and notice that he has the 3yr vet badge. I again suggest that he look for a real team as I wasn't interested in inviting anyone and give him a brb so I could check on laundry. I got distacted by a phone call and didn't return to the game for 10 minutes or so. When I did... He'd invited a full team, then proceeded to set a mission and run like normal. This is when things got trollish. After seeing the full team window my eyes widened a bit and then I hear the tell chime. It's one of the team members chiding me for holding them up. I scroll up and read the chatlines from the team. One of the team members asks me if I'm coming. Without reply obviously. Then the leader, the guy that begged to join me, says lets just go. I keep reading. After a few minutes of what I assume is mission sweeping on their part another member inquires about my status. At this point you'd expect the leader to clue his new team in and kick me. Instead he goes on a tirade about griefers like me ruining the game for everyone. That I spammed the stuffing out of him for an invite and then pull a stunt like this. I've heard the tell chime 2 more times while reading... Looking over the tells, one is from a random team member calling me something I can't print here. The other is from the leader. It simply reads... "So, ready to team yet?" >.< Oy! Every since then, I send a single reply that I'm soloing and then ignore every subsequent request. Some people get their jollies anyway they can. |
Haha, wow...that's pretty epic...
Me, I'd be the one copying and pasting the "conversation" between the two of us back to the whole team for the lulz of it.
Mmmm... lulz.

I was minding my own business, soloing stuff with Kia, my Sword/Shield Scrapper when I get a tell asking me if I'd mind padding for a Manticore TF, since apparently they were one person short to start. I look at the clock, run my plans through my head and realise that I could actually afford to run the TF itself. I say I'll join, but ask if I could stay for the actual TF through the end, and the people agree.
It was a fun TF, it was relatively clean, we had some fun, tossed some banter around and at the end of the day, they directed me to their own community website, suggesting I could make an account and keep in touch. I did, and as it turns out, that was a great decision to make. The thing is, most of my characters are on Victory and most of theirs on Pinnacle, so even today, I don't get to team with my SG a lot, nor participate in many of the scheduled events, but I do chat them up over Global and post my walls of text on their forums just as I do here, and it's still a lot of fun.
The moral of the story? I guess "teaming is good," and while that's true... I do team when I feel like it. The above experience was as good because at the time, I actually did feel like teaming and indeed insisted to stay. Had I not felt like teaming but been forced to, I'd probably have acted like an *******, complained the whole way and ruined everybody's fun. That's why I'm in favour of everyone teaming when and only when he or she feels like it, and never having to be forced to team when that person is not in the mood.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Got a request to "join my team" while I was running around today filming. I explained I was only on to film, so it wouldn't be much fun. (Literally spent two hours jumping in and out of my Sound Stage AE mission creating quick filming setups.)
The reply?
"sokay i can just doorsit"
I didn't know what to say to that so I just went right on filming.

'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.
This particular beehive seems to have major issues understanding the difference between "I think some of you people should try teaming now and again because it looks like you never have before" and "I think none of you should ever be allowed to solo again."

This is re: Bosstone:
Telling people how to play the game is the foundation of this forum as you are probably aware. I disagree that finding teams is a trivial matter. Broadcast can work, help channel can work on some servers (not on Virtue, let me tell you!), but the devs did revamp the search function recently for a reason. They specifically made it possible to see someone who was solo on a mission. I don't know about you but that was the point where I started getting way more requests to join than I ever had before. It was expressly designed to work this way, and it seems to work pretty well. That's part of why it bothers me when people revel in avoiding the system. |
Professor "Twixt" Manchild.
Is this another hairbrained "social experiment?"
Here's the thing, I have bipolar disorder, agoraphobia with panic disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. City of Heroes is a coping game for me, and yes, I have teamed, but when I want to play alone... I. WANT. TO. PLAY. ALONE. PERIOD.
And you have no right to demand otherwise of me.
Generally if I'm not interested in teaming I respond with "not at the moment, thanks. have a good one" and that usually gets a "thanks for responding, have a good night".
But I do have a couple of stories.
A few years ago I received a blind invite. I turned it down. This particular character's flag states "Blind invites will be ignored or ridiculed." The first invite was followed up by a couple more. Slightly exasperated by the repeated blind invites, I sent them a tell. "What part of 'No' don't you get?" Their response was "The part where I don't care." Needless to say they were put on ignore.Really, if I'm not interested in teaming with you, why would you want me along anyway? Find someone who is.
The second story happened last week. I'd just finished up a Tanker Tuesday event and was taking a few minutes to chat with the team leader, who was running an Ice Tank, before logging. While the two of us where chatting we had someone dash up to us, repeatedly asked to be invited to the team. In spite of our telling them several times that we were just talking, they kept insisting that we "invite them!" Eventually I told the leader that he should invite the guy and let him figure it out on his own if he wasn't going to listen to us. So he did. We kept chatting about Ice Armor and the Incarnate end game while the new guy kept asking what we were going to do now. The Ice Tanker and I kept chatting until the other guy got bored, said he was bored, and quit the team. We both got a chuckle about that, wrapped up our conversation and logged. Was it our fault the new guy didn't believe us, and wouldn't listen?

That's not how it has to be. The others can log onto characters they don't intend to play for a while, join the TF, and once it's started, switch back to do whatever they like with their other characters.

This of course means that duoing TFs 'wastes' other people's time only for as long as it takes to form them and start. Recently I've been trioing TFs with my SG-mates, and it's generally taken about five mins tops to find enough padders in my global channels and Help. After that five minutes, everyone who's padded can quit the TF anf carry on. There's precious little 'standing around waiting' for them.
That said, since the padding method exists, the devs should just go one step further and remove all minimum starting reqs from everything in the game, so soloers/duoists/trioists could attempt everything on their own without being forced to team or being at the mercy of the kindness of strangers or bother those strangers when they dont want to be.

Here's a wacky idea, if someone sends a tell asking to join up with you, why not invite them?
|
You were soloing and now you're teamed. |
Do you really care about their grammar skills or presumption? |
Do you feel that a random lowbie is an unconscionable burden upon your shoulders? |
If you're just taking it easy and soloing while you do something else you could say "I'm taking it easy and soloing while I do something else. Still want to join?" They might. |
I almost always invite anyone who asks because if nothing else it's nice to have an audience for my badass spawn shredding. |

If I want to be anti-social or I don't agree with the grind for XP mentality of 95% of those who insist that a team needs to be maxed out to be worth it, that story arcs are a pain, that the only tactic is to bum rush mob after mob and believe you need a specific makeup of a team; too bad I'm soloing tonight.

On a tangentally connected point, my SG-mates and I were trioing synapses TF the other week, so I asked in one of my globals 'can we get some padders for Synapse please? My friends and I want to trio it. You don't need to stay for the while thing, just long enough for us to start, then you can quit'.
After a short while we got enough (it may have only been 1, I cant remember if synapse minimum is just 4?). The thing is, one of the padders, after he'd joined, said 'mmind if I stay for a bit? I'm bored".
Now it would have been an ungrateful wretch indeed who'd have replied 'no sorry, we'd rather you didn't' after he'd been kind enough to pad for us, so I said 'sure' but felt obliged to warn him we were going to be taking it slowly, we'd be chatting on skype so he might think us a bit quiet lol. He stayed for the first mission and then logged out, but he didn't quit. We were a bit confused at that, but when we had to log out after a few more missions one of us parked her toon somewgere safe and left her pc on all night until the next day in case he logged back in and continued without us when we were offline.
I'm nit suggesting ge would have done, but it illustrates an issue with needing padders. I have been on a duo TF attempt where one of the padders did stay and did do a large portion of the TF when we were offline, 'robbing' us of the fun of doing it ourselves.
The minimums need to be removed.

I've had my own dealings with this in the past, whilst on Arbiter Fabulous, which allows me an interesting way to troll a bit.
Note: I don;t always do this, I pride myself on being a very helpful, receptive player willing to guide new players and veterans alike, to those who've met me or played with me know this, at least I hope.
AF: *doing random thing*
Other guy ((OG)): HI, u want 2 join teem?
AF: Oh! Hello darling, sorry a bit busy at the moment, fashion week coming up!
OG: Whut? Join Team, good XP! We need a Widow.
AF: No thank you, but I appreciate the offer, I see on the team finder there are many Widows online, a few in the high 40's. As a 50 I don;t need the XP, it should benefit them.
OG: We want a 50, you shuld join us, y can't you just help us?
AF: Well, I'm a bit busy at the moment, prepping my auction house for funds to make a few new costumes.
OG: Whut? Well join team, we need a 50 Widow. You'll get XP. *invite sent*
It is at this point I get a bit miffed. However those who know me know I have a tendency to... sidetrack bad situations in a unique fashion, emphasis on that last word.
I join the team, to which two members sent me a tell to run for the hills, and that they've seen me in the D. I send them a tell back to enjoy the show and play along.
AF:Oh, saving people in the Television! We're going to be on TV?
OG: Huh, yeah LOL.
AF: *enters mission* GASP! WAIT A MOMENT! We are on TELEVISION, look at what you are WEARING!
OG: Whut?
AF: Oh no no no! You come here, we need to put some clothes on you, that outfit will not do. ((Player realizes some people actually DO use the Random button))
OG: What? We have DE here, kill them.
AF: I couldn;t be seen on television with someone so grubby.. and look at the rest of you, a few of you can be salvaged but let's be honest here... Iwas sent here for a reason.. whoever wants free makeover and fashion advice, meet me at the mission start. *All but the leader zip over*
OG: *gets killed promptly* WTF?! Help me!
AF: I am darling, but you need to help yourself, I knew you needed MY help, but I thought it was going to be a silly battle.. now who all here has the Valkyrie Pack? I'm thinking BIG SHINY BOOTS...
OG: Come help or I'll kick you from the team.
AF: Actually pass star I have a friend who can help. *we are an 8 man team*
OG: ok. *passes star* Who's your friend?
AF: Tim Gunn, I'm watching Project Runway, and I'm INSPIRED!
*mission turns into an hour discussion of costume options and how best to tweak the various looks, OG ragequits after team agrees he looks like Corn Chex soaked in bacon grease, we beat the mission eventually as a side not, then hit the ICON in RWZ*
