The New Look for Circle of Thorns
Hmmm... the costumes are a bit... loud... and busy.
But, other than that, they do a LOT of things right. And almost everything about them is better than the previous re-design. For the most part, this appeases me (not that that was necessary for the Dev team ). |
^This, pretty much.
I'm not a fan of the spiky style at all (see also Ascendant Armour) and these are still a bit too OTT for my liking.
The Mages gloves are what annoy me the most, if they were toned down these would actually be ok. As individual cossie pieces the Mages look should work better, simply because you could use just 1 or 2 elements and blend them with other, less busy pieces. Thrown all together though they're just too spikey, like they're trying to hard, and smack of Games Workshop designs.
Still too WH/WoW but tolerable.
*semi-off topic* Q: How many Games Workshop employees does it take to change a light bulb? A: Three. One to change it, one to wield the chainsaw and one to glue on the spiky bits. |
Back on-topic, I think these look worlds better than the first revamp pics we saw, but still just strike me as having raided the Dark Eldar's closets.
It's an acceptable compromise between keeping the old and the previous revamp revealed at SDCC.
I just hope the legacy models remain in the AE for those of us using recolored critters for special enemy factions. I may not make arcs anymore, but I often put factions together for friends' arcs, and the CoT as they were before filled a very necessary niche for that. These new ones will not work even at all for that purpose.

I like the new CoT costume with the exception of the long purple thingies that stick out of the Death Mage shoulders.
This thread immediately gives me two inescapable thoughts:
1. These costumes are AWESOME! I love 'em! To be honest... I kind of like those better than what we had before This isn't so much of a reimagining as a straight-up improvement, and I am very much in favour of it. If I can use those funny hats on my characters... Well, "Shut up and take my money!" essentially
2. I'm glad I resisted the urge to join the cries of "They're treating us like idiots!" because Matt Miller was right - seeing better pictures with more of the complete set on them did matter. Nevertheless, the extreme violent reaction did get rid of CoT in Tights, and for this I feel much of that thread was worth it.
Corollary: Please give us a larger picture, if you haven't already. The thread is up to 17 pages and I haven't checked the Dev Digest yet, but if you haven't, put one in. As a link if you have to. These costumes are too good to squint at from a mile away.
*edit*
A bigger picture does not appear to show up in either the list of digested developers or moderators. We need a bigger one, please.

Man, the Circle of Thorns are dead, but long live the Ministry of Silly Hats! To me, the Energy/Life Mages look the best out of the new designs, probably because they're so close to the originals. The Boss designs are growing on me, except for that Death Mage. Less menacing, ancient evil and more "spines scrapper pink foam cosplay", in my opinion. The minions, though, have awfully tall pointy hats for just being minions... If the Eath Caster's color was made more earth-tone and less yellowy, that would improve him in particular quite a bit.
I think they're only throwing me off so much because, of everything coming in i21, none of it has to do with the CoT. So having a revamp of 'em, while entirely welcome, is right out of left field. WAY better than the pictures we saw at first, though!

I like it. Now I wonder if there will be a story arc or something to give us a reason for the change.

"Those are Circle of Thorns?"
"They are Circle of Thorns, and it is a long story."
"What happened? Some kind genetic engineering? A viral mutation?"
"We do not discuss it with outsiders."

Death is part of my attack chain.
Perhaps a story involving time travel back to the beginning of the game...

Much much much better!
I especially love how the energy and life mages have bare scalps again, while the higher-ups have even crazier hats than they did before. Very nice tweaking.
Took a while to really look at the CoT redesign.
Overall, I like it. There is enough to evoke what makes the CoT, well CoT.
Now then...
I do like the 'Pope' Hats. It just seems that w/the Casters and the bottom row of Mages, they look like Sentai Nazgul (more out of Jackson's Two Towers and RotK). The minion featured kind of evokes the Nazgul ('Dark Rider' in Fellowship) look, but I think it's the lack of black inside the 'V' part and face of the 'Hood' that makes it look CoTish, but not Nazgulish.
And what's with the Sakura blossom belts on that bottom row of Mages? At least that what it appears like to me.
As stated, I do like the redesign so far. Now what about the Specters and Deamons?
Thank you for the time...
To me, the Energy/Life Mages look the best out of the new designs, probably because they're so close to the originals.

I guess what I am wondering now, is just what a whole room full of these guys is going to look like.

I absolutely ADORE the Energy Mage's look... as for the others... well, I am not 100% happy, but I didn't expect to be, nor do I think that should change anything.

My gut reaction, untainted by reading the rest of the thread: Excellent job Devs! *THIS* makes me think Circle of Thorns again!
Well done, and thanks for listening to the feedback (even if so many people said what I was thinking that I didn't feel the need to add to it).

Great job. I'm just amazed at the speed of the response here and the respect shown to the player base. It's why I still play this game. Good job, devs.

I'll miss you all.
I know I am late to the party, but consider me among those who have done a complete 180 in reaction to these parts.
These look fantastic. Good on you, Devs! Way to stick to your original guns, but take the player feedback as well. I'll say it again, the Dev-Player relationship is what keeps this game going strong.

Very Nice Indeed! They are scary looking now.. Yippee!

These are much, MUCH better than the initial version of the revamped outfits. It's great that you listened to our concerns regarding the revamp and changed them appropriately. I can definitely picture these guys as the Circle of Thorns, as they have the faceless aspect of the minions (Now added to the bosses, even!), the flowing garments, and, of course, the "pope hats". As easy as those hats are to make fun of, they are iconic of the bosses and Thorn Casters and I'm glad to see them retain them. The hats look retextured too, so they don't even look as ridiculous as they used to. I also love the fact that the color on the ice casters actually indicates ice, when the current ice casters look a little strange with their purple and red robes.
The colors on the Madness Mage look a little odd but other than that, these are definitely excellent and I am looking forward to fighting these guys for real!
