The New Look for Circle of Thorns
Much better then what we saw from comic con. I like it.
Not reading the entire thread, but I just want to say, I love, love LOVE these changes. A billion times better than what we originally saw! This is just what I was hoping for, I think!
First off, I want to say this is not an attack at the devs, or anyone else.
I will state, again, as I think I have stated already, that while I think these are step above the look that was seen at comic-con, I still feel they don't fit the way I've come to see the COT over the years and are just a touch too liefeld an McFarlane.
That said, this little rough doodle only exists thanks to a few comments made by some posters that would not keep my mind quiet, as such, I had to do this.
That said, if this is the COT we get, then I suppose I can live with it. Beyond that, very nice of the devs to listen to the fanbase, hope things get resolved in a way that makes everyone happy.
Ok back to my life.
This is... awesome...
Not only because it looks cool.
But because its an awesome show of respect that the "People that be" are showing to us, the players...
This is the best game.
With the best players.
With the best developers.
With the best cookies (well, at least the Guardian server!).

Yes. I can get lost on a straight-line map.
WTF? The devs read the forum and LISTEN?
!!
Also: YES!
[edit: Can you uh...get rid of Oranbega while you're at it? <.< Or at least open it up a little bit like the tunnels? And maybe narrow down the hostage/glowy locations? Honestly I pretty much skip Oranbega missions automatically these days. They kind of give me a headache like the small cave maps, not to mention being really annoying to hunt glowies & the like on. Not the best intro for a new player maybe? I've hated them since the beginning. But maybe that's just me.
Also, 'bega is totally outshone by these new bad$$$ heavy metal CoT dudes anyway...]

kinda looks like they're attempting to cater to a Korean market with the new costume styles. The artwork is very Aion and very Korean.
Wow they did an amazing job redesigning them thanks for listening to us
the only change I make is with the Death Mage I replace the pink with Grey or White
How about just hoods for the minions instead of those crazy hats. Everything else is perfect. Thanks,

Agreed. Kudos on the comic XD

For what they are, the new boss and lieutenant designs are quite nice now. Objectively I do think they're still a little too busy, but they at least look like the Circle of Thorns took a level in badass rather than completely changed their look.
The basic cultist minions I'm still a bit shaky on. The green is a little overpowering, and black is an odd accent color to go with it. Black originally only appeared under their hoods to contrast nicely with the brown robe and glowing green eyes. Now their color contrast just seems...bleh.
The Air Thorn looks 100% fine, while the Earth Thorn looks a little odd. What I would charitably call golden brown rather than more proper earthy tones make them look a bit strange. Was there a particular aversion to brown in this redesign? Reversing the colors could possibly do the trick, though admittedly might make them look a little samey with the Air Thorns.
The Ice Thorn also looks okay, though I feel like the colors should be reversed there as well, perhaps. Something about them just doesn't pop the same way it does for the others.
Never surrender! Never give up!

A comment about Quake Weight, Complete Gym, Bend Flex. Some reference about a hero catching a groups of Circle of Thorns using the Quake Weight. Avoiding name brands.
If it ain't broke set it on fire, then say it was a fault in the design.

Not entirely sure about the new look, but as it's a thousand times better than the old update plan I'll take what I can get.
Thank you, Paragon Studios, for listening and acting on our comments. I know redoing a planned art change this late in the development process was probably one of the last things you wanted, but I'm very grateful you did.

So, this is what the change was going to be all along, right? And the prior version was just to make the real change look better? With the added bonus that the devs got to pretend to listen to the players?
It just seems more plausible than the prior version actually being deemed acceptable.
These new designs look good, though.

think that too. The PR guys here really seem to love that move. Though the pics weren't
released here officially this time, so I think it wasn't intentional. I'm more inclined to fault
insular artist-think than anything else.
I'd hope not, anyway. If it was intentional, they're getting a little too Nemesis for my tastes!
I am really really happy with this change. Much flashier than we are used to, but now my mid-level toons get to have their butt kicked by something that looks awesome.

You seem to be arguing strange tangents, and handwaving away the fact that the current minions and bosses actually look visually distinct while the updated ones do not, and the death mage looks visually distinct from the other bosses and the minions, which means its possible for the bosses to look distinct without violating the artistic boundaries the artists have for the costumes.
So just to be direct: the current minions and bosses are visually distinct: they have radically different silhouettes even if the difference can be described on paper as just a few parts. The proposed update radically reduces the visual difference between minions and bosses for all but the death mage. That's an undesirable feature both in artistic terms and in gameplay terms. The death mage is an example of a visually distinct boss, and while it may not be the best model to use to create that visual distinctness across all the bosses, its being noted for the fact that such visual distinctness is ipso facto possible given the current artistic guidelines for the CoT update. |
However, and here's your tangent, there is actually a far more drastic difference in silhouette between the Thorn Casters and the upper-level Mages that they appear with now in the revamp than there is in the old one, it's just that it's in the legs now. Check them out. The old ones are identical, not nearly-identical, but exact matches in form, from the waist down. You can't say that the Agony and Death Mages look like the Thorn Casters from the waist down now. But (here's the part where I bring that tangent back into agreeing with you) I don't think that's enough. It's not where my eye is drawn, and it looks like you made no notice of it, either. Our eyes are drawn to faces, so distinctions above the waist are more noticeable and useful to us in distinguishing between different models. This is why I think that, at the very least, the Agony Mage needs some kind of back piece similar, but possibly a little smaller than, the one the Death Mage has, and that Boss Mages in general could benefit from something more up above the waist.

Personally, I love the new look. However, seeing them all in line-ups like this does make me wonder...
Have you, the devs, considered spreading out the types of minions / LTs / bosses in the Circle of Thorns across level tiers at all yet? Similar to how the Devouring Earth used to have only one type of their LTs appear at any particular level range, and level 50 missions used to only have the rock-type minions and LTs in them. I would love to see a mixture of the Air, Fire, Earth, and Ice Thorn Casters in spawns... and higher-level versions of Madness, Ruin, and Agony Mages mixed in with Death Mages at the high-end levels. Is this a possibility at all?

So excessively better than the first revamp, there are no words to describe it. Other than being kinda more colorful than I prefer, this looks absolutely awesome.

These costumes for CoT are great. But I'm still wondering how the ghosts and demons look. Will we have the old low-res demons and ghosts playing with the circle or have they been tweaked too?
