The New Look for Circle of Thorns
This is what I am pushing for, done with AE custom edits.
The reason for them being so dull is that they looked silly in their more colorful incarnations, when put next to the demon and ghost NPCs within their ranks. After testing a lot in the open air maps and Oranbega tunnels, the more dull tones help them to look like they belong while also having varied colors. |

I am sorry.
I am sorry that this "modern take" on the CoT is the final version. While the CoT do need a revamp (even though they look perfectly fine (minus their sleeves) on ultra mode, IMO), this look is just not right. It is a definite improvement, but the look has not been "hit out of the park" to use Posi's words. They are the Circle of Thorns yes, but that is not a excuse to make them look like walking pincushions. Tone down the amount of spikes a lot, and the brightness of the colors a bit, and the look would be more bearable. Don't make their robe things flare out so much, it makes them look like they are wearing pagoda roofs.
I'd say go back to the drawing board, but it seems like I am in the minority now and it would just be drowned out by "OMG THIS IS REALLY COOL!!!1!!11!"

What's more worrying is that the Devs were so out of touch with their original designs for the revamp.
The artwork looks wonderful... BUT!!!! and that's a big one....it doesn't translate well at all in the field.
I'd been reading about the new COT in forums, and on the beta chats so I mozied over to the Hollows to check them out and I thought they looked HORRID! And I don't mean that in a good way at all. The COT now look like just another creature (a la coralax and spawns) only with points. Pretty shapeless, and even less recognizable as anything that ever started out as human beings. (At least the old mages still looked somewhat human.) Maybe in other environments they translate better, but I gotta say that I'm terribly disappointed. Too pointy/blobby. |
I know everybody was heatbroken that I wasn't down with the new COT costumes, so you can all rest easy now. =)
After having a chance to fight them in a couple different environments, I gotta say that the new look works. Still not wild about glowy eyes, but then I give my husband a hard time for his glowy-eyed alts. too. I especially like that there are now recognizably female COTs.
Slow to come around I guess! Good job!
I was running through the Hollows yesterday, passed by some CoT, and actually noted, "You know, guys, that Jawa look just isn't working for you anymore." So I'll be interested to see how the new outfits look (haven't been on Beta).
I just ran into the new Circle for the first time, and all I can say is that they are amazing! I had only seem the old preview up until now which many including myself had criticized. You took that response to heart and turned it into something exquisite. Thank you so much, and great job on all of Issue 21 I've explored so far!

The CoT in tights were never the intended end product. They fully intended to cover the tights with more clothing.
The very bright garish colors... now *that* was the intention. And when they got feedback, they pulled that back a bit.
If people waited til the actual rollout ("Whatya think?"), and gave reasoned reponses ("Disappointed no actual robes, but, if going with the new look, tone down the colors"), then this epic thread of doom wouldn't have had to exist.

While I generally like the new Circle of Thorns look, I still don't really like the minions. The complex textures and multiple layers make them feel less like people wearing clothes and more like people whose skin has been replaced with some kind of mould. The first time I ran into these guys in a Port Oaks paper mission yesterday, I first thought I was fighting the Devouring Earth. My first question was "Why am I fighting an army of swamp things?" Only upon reflection did I think to look at their faction given and realised these were supposed to be the Circle of Thorns - people in robes - and not walking mounds of seaweed and dried leaves.
The lieutenants are much better, I'd say, as they have a two-colour design which makes it obvious they're wearing clothes, but the minions just look like coral reefs on legs. Also, I really liked the bosses. I fought a mage with a strong pink motif, and yet somehow that didn't really look out of place with the overall villain group. I'm impressed
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

What's more worrying were the hysterical reactions from the players that saw an unfinished product.

What was Paragon supposed to do: Not show off anything at a trade show because some aspects aren't finished? Or wait til everything is done and delay launch so that they can show off a finished product at trade shows?
And a simple word fromteh Powers That Be, saying that these were not the finished product wouldn't have hurt either. They have to be well aware about how most react to even minor change of existing product!

But neither the obviously unfinished nature of a cell phone snapshot or the very words of Developers were enough to stop a good panic attack (cf. Market Pricing).

I saw the new CoT yesterday for the first time, and realized that they finally added females to the group! =O_O=
Not sure if there's females in the various Mage categories, but there are certainly female minions. Considering that most of the people I've rescued from the CoT were civilian females, this makes sense to actually have female models.

I like the new CoT look.
I'd love to see a new badge where we can have one of the Circle of Thorns Hordelings as a pet. First I thought one of the ghosts would be cool, but we already can get Soul Mastery if we go villain side and do the patron arc, so that would be redundant. A pet Hordeling would really make me feel more like I have a Circle of Thorns toon. Also if we could do a series of missions or some kind of arc to get Mages, Spectral Knights, or Spectral Followers to ambush us in any kind of mission just like Void Seekers do Kheldians that would be awesome and this would make your toon become a Circle of Thorns epic.
I'd love to see more Circle of Thorns arcs, more contacts, a way to get random Circle of Thorns missions via the paper or radio rather than just all random missions. I know I'm asking for a lot but I am a Circle of Thorns fan.
I think the new look is awesome ... can I have the boss back detail PLEASE and thank you.
