I agree with most everyone, in that it is an improvement over the initial redesign. However, they really are an improvement only by comparison. At least now you can tell they are supposed to be CoT.

But, I agree totally with the large minority. Way too brightly coloured. Way too pointy. Way too armoured looking. Still managed to completely lose the mysterious cultist look and feel that made the CoT so much fun. Way too much like you're trying to look like one of the other MMOs.

That said, the artwork is great,a nd as an item to sell to the players, they are fine, and judging by a lot of responses, great. Not something I'd buy, but it's still nice work, just totally inappropriate for the CoT.

However, I agree with everyone in that it's wonderful that the devs DO listen to their fanbase.

I completely understand the need to update the looks of the NPCs, but feel you still have failed to create CoT NPCs, but instead created some totally new NPC group. To try and offer some constructive criticism toward that end, I'd like to suggest to the art team a couple of specific models of how to change an iconic enemy group for an environment with a vocal and dedicated fanbase such as CoH. Less is much more. Reference the changes made to the Daleks or the Cybermen appearance over the years. Their changes were made over a lot longer than 7 years yet they are much more subtle.

Thanks for listening. Hope you get these well done costume pieces out for sale, since obviously everyone thinks they look great and appreciates the great work and effort put into them. They for sure will sell. Now, lets hope you realize that they only barely resemble the CoT and try to squeeze in one more redesign (I realize that this isn't likely, but I can hope). If this must be the new CoT (than at least it's better than the previous redesign attempt), try to at least keep the Daleks in mind on future redesigns.

Devs, I gotta tell ya, after 6 years of on and off playing, you have never ceased to disappoint me in how much you care about us and value our input as a fanbase! THOSE are absolutely awesome! I love you guys!

I was with just about everyone when these we were first shown the revamp and now I'm with everyone on the revamped revamp. Very nice, its a tad ornate, but, its very cool and I'm glad you paid attention to our demands. I especially like the death mage and the ruin mage.

That said, if this is the COT we get, then I suppose I can live with it. Beyond that, very nice of the devs to listen to the fanbase, hope things get resolved in a way that makes everyone happy.

Ok back to my life.
You call this a doodle?! Egads, go forth and doodle more! I LOL so hard my belly still hurts! Do more!

They still look a bit too flamboyant with parts of their attire touching the sky and what not =/

Better than the skin tight stuff though, however I still like the original concept's gloves and shoulders.

Well, their better than the first re-vamp, but not near as cool as the original. They could still be toned down alot. The minions should still just be in plainer brown robes but the bosses look pretty sweet.

I'm really happy that the devs have listened to player feedback.

However, I'm really ambivalent about the new-fangled CoT look. Other people have said it better I think, basically that the flavour of the group is changed.

Since the change is going in no matter what, I guess I'll just request the minions be made more drab and unspikey. It makes the Lts and bosses stand out more.

Its now clear that as you progress in rank in the Circle of Thorns you become more spiky.

To be honest I think they are a little bit ott, but they are reminiscent of the original so I am happy. Heck, nothing wrong with something being ott in a super hero game, right?

Well, they still look like WoW, but at least they look like the Circle again.

Old designs are still better. Wish we could have just had the old designs with a little polish, but I didn't have my hopes up.

All I can say about these is that they look like a flamboyantly ridiculous looking Circle of Thorns, instead of a new group that had nothing to do with the old Circle whatsoever.

I'd conceal my face too, if I had to dress like that.

But for what it's worth its a pretty solid improvement over the original proposal... and still not as good as what your playerbase came up with

P.S.

You know, I've seen a few parody posts already criticising the ridiculous costumes of the Circle of Thorns, and while I don't disagree... Isn't that kind of the point? I mean, look at even the legacy mages - funny hats are what we wanted. What I wanted, anyway. They ARE ridiculous and absurd wizards, but that really is how I've always seen them. Sure, the simple robed monks are the first thing we see and what most people remember, but by the later levels even the basic casters are sporting ridiculous shoulders.

And, really, "ridiculous wingspan wizard" designs like in Red Sonya (I think it was) are what I expect the high mages to be. Funny hats, fancy robes and all the other absurd garments that tell you "This man could not walk through doors... Because he doesn't need to!" I honestly feel that this kind of wizardry is very welcome in City of Heroes, where most of our "magic" tends more towards the technomagic aspect, or post-modern aspect of magic. The typical ridiculous wizards you see in much of high fantasy are generally absent from the game, and these guys, I think, do a good job of filling that void.

So, yes, "a flamboyant pope," indeed. But that's what I like about it.

This is my view on it as well. The main difference between the old mages and these are more polygons and high res textures. Those 'pope hats' aren't anything new, nor are the colors.

That's what struck me back in the other thread; everyone was saying they wanted the brown robed and hooded look back for the mages. They never had that look. The only ones with hoods were/are the archer and cultist minions in the low-mid levels. Other than those it's ALL pope hats (or bald) and funky colors.

I believe you're thinking of Kulan Gath, the magic-using nemesis of Red Sonja, both of which were created for Marvel Comics's Conan series in the 70s (the cheesiest decade on record). He was later integrated into the regular Marvel superhero universe - and given a much spikier collar. The character design doesn't quite count as high fantasy so much as the comic book version of the sub-genre. There's nothing wrong with that as a template necessarily, but the new CoT redesign for the mages goes to extremes in adding spikes, spines, and random pointy bits.

Hot pink and violet are not part of the typical high fantasy magician's color scheme, so yes, definitely, "flamboyant pope" rather than ancient lost civilization wizard.

I wonder just how many of these costume pieces we'll be getting? I sincerely hope we'll get the loincloth and butt cape piece- a lot of people have been clamoring for something like that for ages.

Yes, the devs have a history of taking items requested by players and giving them to NPC's instead, but they also have a history of listening to player feedback, hopefully including how frustrated people are with that- asking for something for themselves, only to see it given to NPC's and locked out from player use.

Like I said - I don't find "flamboyant pope" to be bad thing. We need a few of those in there, as well. I like that they managed to combine what was sinister about the old CoT with what made that very same group so very goofy, and still keep them stylish, at least in my eyes. I'm sure we'll see more hoods and simpler designs for the low-level minions, but the flamboyant, over-dressed grand masters are pretty much exactly as I'd have liked to see them, given the limitations of the engine, back spikes and all.
