Doesn't look much like Superman, either, but in fairness they're only working with what Jim Lee's left them to work with. 21st-century redesign my pancake.

I think that would be a better look.

The only think I think they have done right with the costume is the boots and the size of the S-shield. The shield on Routh's costume was too small.

Dear DC,

Please stop destroying your characters. I hate the suit now. I hate you. Thanks for crushing my hopes of a decent DC character flick. I still hate you.

I really dislike the redesign. The costume works better with the trunks breaking it up in the middle.

The darker tones remind me of the Kingdom Come suit, so I can't completely hate it; it's just, again, you know they've made advances with suits like these and this guy looks like he could pull off a pretty badass Superman, so why did they feel compelled to fix what wasn't broken?

Let's hope everything else about this film is good enough to help overlook the unnecessary tweaks to the costume. It'll be jarring enough with the new Spider-Man.

Yeah, this is an appalling design. I don't usually object to a little tweaking, but Superman's outfit is iconic well beyond comic book fans.

What's with the horrible black plastic webbing?
The blue is completely the wrong shade. Superman is supposed to be a BRIGHT hero. Are we doing elseworlds Superman/Batman hybrid? And no-pants is going make him the laughing stock of the tabloid press.

Maybe this is supposed to be a Kryptonian suit that will evolve into the proper suit. If not, this looks like a movie to avoid at all costs.

I really should do something about this signature.

As long as I can remember I've been a huge Superman fan and regarding the new suit...

I kinda like it. Yes the blue is a bit too dark but I for one am glad they finally got rid of the circus strongman outside underwear.

Who knows what that suit will look like on screen? Every shot I've ever seen of the Batman Begins or Dark Knight suit have looked terrible but they look great on screen. Cinematography and lighting change a LOT of stuff, the suit most likely wasn't intended to be viewed in poorly lit spy shots.

This costume (though quite a bit brighter) is the norm in comics now, if they stick with it I can see the trunksless version becoming the iconic costume for a new generation.

So here's to hoping this movie rocks and in the sequel they tweak the costume by removing the webbing and making the blue brighter, other than that I'm fine with the changes.

Being nostalgic over the old costume is nice and all, but let's face it, this movie is for the youngin's. Young people respond well to these updated looks and it's their attention and money they are after. Just look at Spiderman, Thor, Captain America etc etc.

For every old school adult that won't see the flick because of the costume there will be 5 teen age girls oggling over the fake cuts and bulge, scores of boys emulating this Superman, as each generation has their own. And to top it off they throw in a little Russell Crowe for the older ladies.

Not to mention the biggest factor, merchandising. If toy history has shown us anything it's that alternate or updated versions of heroes is big money.

I consider that design too dark. It looks as if it's trying so hard to be "serious" and "not some stupid, childish comic book" that it goes past "serious" and straight into "unintentional self-parody."

This is a Christopher Nolan project, so I suppose that's par for the course.

The fabric Brandon Routh wore in Superman Returns was similar to this one as it also had a patterned look (they were tiny "S" symbols IIRC). They were far less pronounced on that one as opposed to this new one though.

I'm in with the camp that really doesn't care for the plastic look and no undies.

But you'll be able to buy copies of the new costume to put on your own characters!

C'mon, that makes it awesome, right?

They might as well just let Supes wear a black leather trenchcoat and be done with it.

Anyone remember in Louis & Clark when some time-travelling villain asked Superman why he wore those pajamas? He said his mom made them for him

P.S. The new guy needs a haircut.

I think you might be mixing episodes, I specifically remember the "my Mom made it for me" line as being his response to a kid (in the first episode, IIRC) asking him where he got his costume.

I'm just not getting a 'Superman' vibe from that costume. Perhaps it's because I grew up with the Christopher Reeves films. I dislike the dark tones, ya, I think that's my main issue.

If you only look at graphical elements, maybe. The underwear on the outside has been such an outdated relic of original superhero costume design, it's past time for an update. Anyone remember those Charles Atlas ads they used to run in comics? That's what they did with Superman's design, keeping the trunks and coloring in his legs and chest to cover up too much skin.

Otoh, Captain Marvel always wore pants, if tight, and kept his underwear where they belonged. maybe the history of graphic costume design woulda been different if DC hadn't sued the pants off Fawcett Comics back then.

Granted Superman is the preeminent comic book character but Batman's been around a long time and that costumes been through more makeovers then Lady Gaga in a given year... in short Chris Nolan having some say in this latest Supes flick leaves me with a warm sense of anticipation and little concern over 'tones' 'tweaks' and 'underwear' or lack thereof.

Superman is after all an extraterrestrial and it's always been a silly premise that while the characters alien skin might deflect 40 caliber machine gun bullets, that polyester jumpsuit he wears should be torn to **** after every battle leaving him nearly/entirely naked... so something that looks like it could've come from his home planet (which the last superman film also attempted) is fine with me, and my wife, and both of us were huge Superman the Movie fans as kids.

I still pretty much hate the hair the most. My wife is pissed that they removed the briefs look, but it doesn't bother me much. I think the movie is going to flop no matter what though.
