Do you remember the first time?
Given the incredibly wide range of AT and powerset combinations we have in CoH (it's at what... 600+ now?) I'm curious about what you started off with, and whether your preferences have changed since?
The first character I ever created was a Claws/WP Scrapper - not a Wolverine clone, honest - with a red and black costume and the name Razerz (very 90s Dark Age anti-heroic, I suppose) I didn't stick with her very long, and scrappers are... okay, but by no means my favourite AT. I still like Claws/ though. Finally deleted a few weeks ago, when I was reorganising my character list. So what was the first character you ever made in CoH, and do you still play them? (The inspiration for this thread was me musing about the number of brand new no-vet badge players I see running Dominators, which strike me as the most newbie-unfriendly AT of them all, given how relatively complex they are to play.) |
The second character, Life Nova, became my first 50. Empath/Psi defender. She used a oriental-style costume (martial arts robe).

Yes. I can get lost on a straight-line map.
My first one was Satan's Robot (also my original forum handle). SS/INV Brute with a costume meant to look like Gort. Badly built and long gone, I think I got him to 22ish before wandering off to do other things, including rolling my "surprise" main Daemodand. I'm not even especially fond of blue side or Scrappers, but somehow he became and remains my main (and my first 50).
I guess it's true what they say: a painful leveling experience can actually make you grow attached to a character.
The best comics are still 10!

WARNING: I bold names.
My very first toon was and always will be my main -- an Elec/Elec Blaster. He's been through a lot -- I made him a few months before ED hit. He wasn't my first 50, sadly (that ended up being my first villain, a Bots/Dark), and it took me a while to figure out a build that worked for him. I finally got into the zen of blaptrolling, which was only made easier with IOs and set bonuses. Now he's actually enjoyable to play.
That said, I doubt I'd roll another Blaster. I tried Psy/Mental when those sets were proliferated, but alt-itis prevented the toon from leveling very far, and I wasn't really feeling it anyway. Ultimately, Blasters are too squishy for me.

My very first alt was a Fire/Ice tank. I deleted him and remade him a number of times so the "original" one isn't around any more, but the character does still exist. The latest incarnation is a few years old at this point. Sitting somewhere in his late 30s, and gets very little play time.
Spines/Regen scrapper. I jumped to an Ice/Ice blaster, which is a combination I stuck with for quite a while. I left for a while, and when I came back, Katana/Regen is what stuck. It's also the first thing I took to fifty. So, yeah. Damage is kinda where it's been at, for me.
Fire/Emp troller.
Being a bit shy at the start, i used brawl as my main attack for many a level and teamed up when i could. Soloing was *hard* for me until i hit 32, and then i just zoomed through the levels.
Still my main, and will be the one i take all the way through Incarnate Wise. I only have one other 50 (fire/psi dom, made the day of CoV launch) who took 3 and a bit years to hit 50.
My very first toon was a ss/inv brute named "Forefinger" but was a Lobo clone. Ahh. Good times. My first 50 and my only toon for a very long time until I had to make a mastermind and then I had the two of them for a couple of years.
@Joshua.
my main toon is a ninja/dark mm, ive never gotten tired of him and hes still my main toon after about 4.75 years and ive logged dang near 5500 hours on him, most of which are badge collecting (hes up to 1191 atm)
other toons that ive found an interest in are ill/cold troller, dark/stone brute, and earth/fire dom
i also have another half dozen project toons im working on IOing as well, but as for favs go my main and the other 3 listed are my top 4
My first character was an Energy/Energy Blaster, named Rush Bolt, who took Hover so he could blast away from way up high.
He's been long deleted, but I actually still play Energy/Energy Blasters. They're, by far, my favorite Blaster.
Nowadays, though, my favorite AT is Dominators because, while they can shoot from afar, they also do great getting in close and smacking stuff.

First ever toon was a fire/devices blaster. I was an instant alt-aholic though so he might have got 3 log-ins. First 50 came about 1.5-2 years later with a claws/SR scrapper.
My first toon ever is (cuz I still have her although I don't play her much) a MA/Regen Scrapper. I named her Red Hot123, cuz I didn't know that if the name was taken you could just put a ' or a . after it so I was getting alot of, did you get genericed, or are you a RMTer, so I paid to change her name, she is now Lily'.
She is level 50 also did the incarnate arc with her and got her the first tier on the enhancement.

My first character, Spectreblade (Broadsword/Dark Armor Scrapper), was created when I first got the game shortly after launch, and remains my main to this day, and is also my first character to reach Lv. 50. I've since created a lot more characters, but Spectreblade's still the one that I've put the most effort into developing.

Melancton was my very first hero and is my longest-suffering, most patient one at that. Virtually every hard lesson that I have learned came at his expense.
Electric/Fire Blaster sounded really cool, but /Fire was a gimpy secondary in i3 when I started, and Electric is not the most powerful set by far, either. Travel powers were very End hoggish and ED showed up in short order.
Melancton is now picking up Shards and still learning stuff the hard way, and will always be a Hero. I have never changed his Protector of Innocents title since level 10 when he got it.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
Claws/Dark Armor Scrapper named Pale Blood. It was the start of the first Winter Event...EVER!
Much PLing was done! Unknown to me, as I was new to the game!
I slotted brawl and hover!
I knew my build was weak, and so I came to the forums!
That character has been deleted ever since.

I made an emp/elec defender, Before I knew what CoH was about, and before i had played any MMO, I was worried about self healing and surviving. Now though, I know Buffs>heals. I got some good use out him on teams, back in issue 6 people broadcasting 'we need healorz' But I grew bored of him very quickly and I basically got him to 50 and shelved it.
my 2 other early characters were an Ma/Regen Agent 1099 . Kinda got lucky on him, Regen is real easy to play early on, QR and multiple self heals? score!
The other, and my first 50, was Radical Raptor, an inv/axe tanker. I quickly loved the dynamic. charging in first, getting all the badies attention, and chunkin that axe around, making them fly up in the air. It was a real fun ride and cemented my love of the AT.
Radical Raptor is also the character that i've rebuilt the most as well. Back then I hadn't discovered the joy of mids, and I came into the game before IO's, but after the GDN and ED. Im sure most are aware of the difficulties invuln had during this time. I believe it was my primary that kept it fun for me, all the knock up and knockdown kept the incomming damage to a managable level.
Once IO's appeared, and Willpower came along, I made a huge mistake and began to build him for +regen and +res bonuses. It just didn't seem to do anything to his survivability. I had gotten to the point of almost shelving the thing and rolling a willpower. However, after a little more research, and wonderful pointers, like Call me Awesome's Invuln guide , I began to rebuild him. He still isn't complete. But I know that we are in need of an amazingly survivable tank, Radical Raptor can do the job. Already I can go afk, surrounded by CoT, and comeback to a barely touched health bar. Something I never could of accomplished before. His performance finally matches his primary's name sake, Invulnerbility.
Through all this, he is a much beloved character, It has felt like an accomplishment, Just like I have written here, he has a story to him, besides the little background bio he has in game. He has in a sense, grown and matured over the years to become a dependable and powerful character that still, makes me chuckle when I play it

Jirra Roo Plant/Storm/Stone/Musculature Controller
Combat Kangaroo Rifle/Energy/Mace/Spiritual Blaster
Kung Fu Kangaroo Martial Arts/Reflexes/Body/Spiritual Scrapper
Tribal Arc Shield/Elec/Mu/Spiritual Tanker
I wasn't engrossed by the game at first probably because my first character was a grav/kin controller. It was very rough going. I remember fighting some Igneous and getting absolutely creamed. On top of that, my costume was pretty crappy.
My first character was my Broad Sword/Invulnerabilty Scrapper named Sir Slasher. While I did make a few mistakes with his build (All of which have since been fixed), I kept him and he is now my strongest Incarnate character.
to TO THE END!
Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!
My first character was Ullikummis, stone/stone tank. My first 50 as well, and my first incarnate.
That blue thing running around saying "Cookies are sometimes food" is Praetorian Cookie Monster!
Shoot on sight, please.
My first character was probably either my MA/SR Scrapper named Seiben or my (deleted years ago) Elec/Elec Blaster named Mechageist. Some day i'll get Seiben to 50. She's taken almost seven years just to reach 46 when i have alts who took less than 2 months to reach 50.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
My very first character was Johanna Sinclair, an en/en blaster - the timebending, troublemaking, techie pagan nun. Absolutely LOVED that character (created her on every server, in fact), and en/en remains one of my favorite sets. She was also my first 50. Not my first Incarnate, though.

Hm. The first two characters I ever made were on my brother's account, when he was convincing me to try the game. First was a BS/SR scrapper 'homage' to a certain sci-fi franchise signature order, second was a mad science themed grav/storm controller. The scrapper never got remade when I got my own account, the controller did but I never really played him much (I think he's sitting at around 20 on a server I don't play on anymore - I'll get back to him someday, though, I swear!).
I don't think the controller was the first character I made once I got this account, but I don't really remember who was. It could have been my storm/dark defender, or possibly a (both since deleted) ice/ice blaster or ice/ice tank.

This is what it means to be a tank!
My VERY first character was actually on a friend's account before I joined the game: A kat/SR scrapper named "Ronin Blair" a terrible terrible character concept: He was an anime fan who fried his brains on watching too many anime one night and came to believe he was a shonen hero.

It was actually the second toon i played. not sure anymore what was my original toon but i do believe i didnt like it- either boring or the style of it at the time.
my second toon i made ever and is still going is my Stone/Invul Brute- HardRider V2 originally made in Issue 6, i just feel in love with the set- stone melee- sounds awesome, invul- feck yer why not...Really glad i did, its now super strong and even now is a rare set (in my eyes) to see around- union that is..compared to other sets ofc. its not even end heavy now thks to the time i put into it and the creativity of the IO'n (not even purpled or pvp io'd- and never will)
However i do wish we/i had more pbaoe/aoe to the set but dont regret my choice ever.
