Do you remember the first time?
My first character was my Invulnerability/Energy Tanker. Soon followed by a Martial Arts/Regen Scrapper.
I occasionally still play that Tanker, but he's only level 36 IIRC.
I'd probably still play my Scrapper, given that he's my namesake, but they took a powerset that I was enjoying as a rather passive set (and which makes more sense as such) and turned it into a click-intensive pain in the backside; then they released Willpower just to rub salt in the wound. Thus he sits at level 38 and I only log into him occasionally to remind myself that I abhor playing him.

We're talking a very long time ago here...
The first time I logged in, I made one character of each archetype. I don't remember the order.
Mr. Normal: AR/Dev blaster. CIA agent tasked with leading teams of supers, using technology to keep up with them. The first character I took into Perez Park, I think, but didn't play much after that.
The Librarian: Dark/Dark defender, a Lovecraft inspired academic who stumbled across a book of forbidden lore in the back of the library. Later recreated as Professor Gloom (my go-to 50 for teams), and also as Baron Gloom the warshade (who just hit 45).
Iggy: As in igneous. SS/Stone tank. Never played him much, level 10 tops. Probably less. I really can't stand to play tanks.
And there was a scrapper... hmmm, I've played a lot of scrappers. They're my favorite AT. The first might have been Vain, dark/dark, inspired by a character from Thomas Covenant's White Gold Wielder. But I think the first was Metroninja: a kid who ordered a "Become a Ninja in Ten Easy Lessons" book from the back of a comic book. Actually, the very first might have been Katana Guy, who was reborn as Joey Katana when they changed the katana animations a couple of issues later. Joey Katana was my first level 50 and is my only Incarnate. Kat/Regen, survivor of many nerfs and still kicking butt.
Oh, and a controller: Mentat. Mind/FF, I think. Name taken from Dune, costume from... I don't know what. All swirly blue and black. Victim of a Crey labs accident, if I remember correctly. Never made it past level 10.
I also had a set of characters I created in my head before I got into Beta, none of which turned out to be possible once I had my hands on the character creator. A dark blaster, an axe scrapper, a skeleton, etc.

Hy-Beams was my first character and my Main. Created her when I downloaded the trial and signed up after about a week. She's an NRG/NRG Blaster because I went into the game wanting to create a Hero that shot lasers from her eyes. She couldn't shoot from her eyes but she is a lot of fun to play. She is also my first 50.
I still remember the first play session. I picked Protector because it was the top of the list and after the Tutorial, I dropped in Atlas Park. The fanfare music, the crowd of people (I guess I was fortunate Protector was crowded that day). I saw a character standing near me just take off and fly and I was like, "Wow!". I was such a noob, I missed the message about training and went right to City Hall and took missions. I think I was level 4 or 5 before I ever actually trained the first time.
On another account I had Lightning-Seed. A Plant/Elec Dom. I loved her and thought she was the most powerfull thing in the world. that account is done now.
After coming back years later, (I left when AE came in) I can't seem to play anything long enough to compair with her, other than the fact that I now can no longer play doms for some reason. Even though I tried to remake Lightning-Seed.
I play a lot. To much sometimes, I think. To many hours, and I think I got spoiled by another hero game which let me essentially make anything I wanted. I could have a claw wielding, Psychic, who threw snow storms while swinging an acidic chain...and if that didn;'t work well Id throw fireballs from within my magical personal forcefield. But that game sucked for reasons I just wont get into.
I guess my closest now is the Hybrid Night Widow. Even though I got her to 32 and that seems to be when I stop playing anything.

My first character was a Canadian hero with two robotic arms that was an energy/energy blaster. His name was Normallis and his costume was like a golden-age amalgamation of Puck and Guardian from Alpha Flight.
I was a slow, slow learner. There was a "Reserved" sign for me at the hospital.
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

Samuel_Tow: Your avatar is... I think I like it
I cant remember my first actual toon, but the first one I stuck with was a Claw/Regen scrapper. I was so bad *** I could have 2 people pad my missions on the highest difficulty and still live, rawr.
I went through beta with an elec/fire blaster, which I recreated when CoH went live but soon started playing a fire/mace tank instead.
My first character only hit 50 late last year, almost 7 yrs in the making.
Inv/Nrg tank. I deleted her when they did the big nerf on Energy Melee. I just couldn't play her anymore. But she sure was fun for a long time. I really had no idea what I was doing back then. I haven't rolled another tank since. After nearly six years, I still play almost every AT like a tank. I guess that's why a defender never sticks!
I started just after issue 7 came out when a friend bought me the box for City of Villains to lure me in... kindof "the first hit's free" sort of deal. So here's a not-so-brief history...
My first character was a Rad/Rad Corruptor (named, you guessed it, Siolfir). Once she got into the low 20s, I made my second character - Mister Grimshaw, a Robots/Dark MM. He was deleted in the teens (after I got the title "The Terrible", which was the whole point in making him!), in large part due to my dislike of the running and jumping animations for the male model and in small part due to finding myself always out of endurance because I felt I had to always be doing something other than hitting binds that said "do I ever kill anything?" and "would you guys quit shooting me?".
My third character was a MA/Regen Stalker that I don't even remember the name of anymore who very slowly made it to level 28 before being deleted after being two-shot by a Warrior boss because I assumed Instant Healing meant I'd have time to do a CAK after Assassin's Strike (nope!). I've been fond of defense secondaries on Stalkers ever since (although I do now have another MA/Regen Stalker on another server at level 43; I learned that I have to pay a little more attention with her than my /Nins tho! ).
While the Stalker was in the teens Siolfir got to level 34, and I got tired of what I saw as "plinking things to death" with Neutrino Bolt and ended up deleting her and made an Ice/Rad Corruptor named Frigid Waste that was my first 50 - she flew through levels even when soloing, and I was asked to team a lot from people wanting to kill AVs. Once the first batch of free transfers came around, she shifted servers a couple of times to come back to Infinity as Siolfir.
When Frigid Waste was still level 28 I teamed with a kinetic for the first time and discovered the joys of Speed Boost. I immediately made Frozen Rush (Ice/Kin Corruptor) after that team, and she got to 50 but never gets played anymore although she still has my personal fastest time to get Elusive Mind: it took around 20 seconds after the Rikti started showing up in her first raid (she got the bombs during that one, too!). That was when you could target them while they were teleporting in, and Fulcrum + Ice Storm + Blizzard got me both Sentry and Chief before the Blizzard stopped falling.
After Frozen Rush was my first Brute, an Electric Melee/Electric Armor named Tara Volt that I took neither Tough nor Aid Self on, and still managed to do just fine with, but stopped playing a lot when I started running into lots of EBs and AVs in the 40s because I felt like I was just plinking away again... so I made Saveur du Mois (EM/Elec) and never felt like I was plinking anything (but myself) to death with her.
Knowing I was going to take Energy Transfer, I took Aid Self for her, and then smacked myself for not taking it on Tara. She's also the first character that I tried to get all of the accolades on, and tried to get them asap - Force of Nature really helps endurance woes before Power Sink, and who needs Power Surge when you've had Demonic Aura since level 6? Saveur ended up being my second 50, but found herself not being played much even before the EM nerfs because I spent too much time using Aid Self to get the full damage potential out of ET (lowering my overall damage to where I may as well not have had it); instead I made a SM Brute and once the nerfs came and the entire feel changed I only kept her because she was my badge collector. Energize let her worm her way out of retirement, and moderately heavy IO investing has me tolerating the slow animations better and she's played as much as any of my 50s.
And that's probably more than anyone's likely to read, let alone care about, so I'll just wrap it up there.
So, the TL;DR version of my first 6 chars:
- Rad/Rad Corr (deleted at 34)
- Bots/Dark MM (deleted before 20)
- MA/Regen Stalker (deleted at 28)
- Ice/Rad Corr (first 50!)
- Ice/Kin Corr (retired at 50)
- ElM/ElA Brute (retired at 50)
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

First character created:
Annon the Fury (since just plain Annon was taken on virtue where I made him first), a BS/Regen Scrapper created 9/30/05. He currently sits at 34ish and I haven't played him in years except to collect anniversary badges and some event badges. He was later (2/09/08) created on Guardian as Annon, a BS/WP Scrapper and was one of my fastest 50's; he dinged on the ides of March (just a little over a month after creation).
Current scrapper count (on Guardian, which became my home server due to friends): 14
First "main":
Wendy O, a Fire/Kin Controller created 9/30/05 (about 2 hours after I made Annon the Fury and well before I knew about Fire/Kin's stigma). Played her up until she got to around 40, had a falling out with the Supergroup I was helping to lead, and moved on to other projects; which delayed her hitting 50 until January of '07. And since then I haven't really played her much at all, especially after Hami got changed to what it is now.
First level 50 character:
Gwynevieve, a Fire/Fire/Fire Blaster created 3/12/06. Hit level 50 on 12/01/06. She still has a mostly HO/SO build and I haven't played her much at all in years.
First Incarnate:
Becca Blue (formerly Rebecca Johnstone, but I wanted a shorter and more hero-sounding name for her) an Inv/SS Tanker created 10/29/05. She was one of my slowest characters to hit 50; achieving that final ding on 4/12/08. Johnstone is my Scottish clan name; my great-grandmother's maiden name was Johnstone and my grandmother was very proud about her heritage. It rubbed off on me(even though I'm a total mutt); hence my global name and the multiple characters in my roster that share the surname. After my grandmother died this past August, I brought Becca out of retirement and gave her a proper IO build as a small tribute. And when I finally got a chance to play the incarnate content on live, she was the first to run through the arc. She's now my main and I rarely play the other 122 characters that I have floating around the servers because I enjoy playing her so much.
That was fun to share, and I enjoyed reading about others' firsts. Good thread. Cheers OP.

All my characters
Mad Hatter Man was my first toon, AR/Energy blaster made when i joined my first 50, was my badge toon till i just gave up on badges (Too many one time only keep your sub active badges carrot on stick badges). Took me 6 to 9 months to hit 50, back when debt was actually a problem and AR wasnt COMPLETELY terrible.
He was name nerfed 2 years later because some how ncsoft thinks mad hatter is copy written by disney? even though technically its a term describing people who sell hats who have mercurey poisoning and that Louis Carroll character is now in open domain. I switched his name to MHM for a while till they allowed free server transfers and i got his name changed to Hatter. Once in a while i log on to him hes now a villain and im working on doing story arcs i never have done red side with him, i plan on doing incarnate stuff with him eventually but AR is such a pain to play. My fav at is and forever will be blasters and my fav secondary is /energy, i have had or still have every blaster combination with the energy secondary to 50. |
My first character is a Forcefields/Psychic Blast defender, rolled during May of 2004. I distinctly remember duoing with the Mad Hatter Man on his AR/Energy blaster. A lot of people in the first few months gave Forcefields a rough time, but my new teammate had a saying, "With bubbles, all things are possible!" Our duoing days were extremely successful.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
My first character on my own account, was a Fire/Fire Blaster named Flamin' Fred. He was deleted a few months later. I was unimpressed with his costume once I had gotten my graphics issues resolved. I still have my second character created on my own account. a Dark/Dark Defender named Dark Dave. he was made a few days after Flamin' Fred. But, I made a few minor alterations to his costume and wasn't unimpressed enough to delete him. Over the years, I have created well over 100 characters. But, I've only deleted, maybe, a dozen of them.
Yes, I have come up with better names for many of my characters. Dark Dave and Flamin' Fred were let's-see-what-this-game-is-about characters. Neither of them really had a back-story. Although, Dave did acquire a bit of a back-story as he progressed.
Arilou was my first main character with a back-story and my first 50. Most of which was made long before containment and done mostly solo. Not bad for an Illusion/Force Field Controller, if I do say so myself.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
My first character was Ironblade, a broadsword/regen scrapper. Broadsword seemed very straightforward and I figured regen would keep me alive while I was learning the game. I was not disappointed. Ironblade was my first 50 and remains my most-played character.
Paragon City Search And Rescue
The Mentor Project
My very first was Mr. Notorion. Yeah the name was intentional. I just liked the sound of it better than "notorious". Except for the chest symbol (he didn't used to have one) his costume really hasn't changed a whit since day 1. He did, however, start out life as a rad/rad defender. He was rebuilt a couple of times until I finally found what he should have been in the first place as an energy/energy blaster.

Rolled an AR/DEV at launch, since I liked the concept. Figured out that blaster wasn't for me. She hit 41 in Issue 1 and then slowly crawled to lvl 48 during the years and still stuck there : )

My first was created on 2007-04-12. She is a MA/SR Scrapper, known as Honey-Bree, a nicknake given to her by her sensei back when she began her training (Honeybee, Honey Bee, and Honey-Bee were taken at the time on Virtue, so I decided that her real name was Bree and then punned it.)
Here is how she looked when she arrived in Paragon:
The robe got swapped out when the Magic Pack was released though:
She's currently level 47, and I do still play her occasionally. But I have a couple others I am focusing on heavily at the moment.
My first character was a Mind/Kinetic controller that I created during my 14 day trial. His costume was awesome and I took Repel and LIKED IT! Anyways, despite loving the game *something* was missing and I didn't subscribe.
Then they released City of Villains and not only did I buy the game, I took on a 1 year subscription right from the getgo.
My first real character was a Mind/Energy Dominator. His costume was awesome, he was a natural martial artist who had perfected body and mind controlling chi blasts and weaving his brain waves. I ended deleting him at level 34 because I stole the name from another game (Elite Deathguard) and there were no rename tokens.
My first main and subsequently, 50, was my Dual Blades/Electric Armor brute. I so loved the mix right from the release of DB that I actually did not play any other characters. My altitis had been cured, temporarily. Her name though, is almost exactly as the Dominator, despite both being my original creations, this one also had a name taken from my own imagination, not another persons. Elite Dreadnaught. Mispelled and everything too! I just blame it on her being a demon from another dimension.
My first character was a SS/Inv tank called the Crimson Timberwolf. I don't know how long he lasted, but it probably wasn't more than a week. I didn't understand tanks and he felt underpowered. 3+ years later, and I'm still not a fan of playing tanks.
(Sometimes, I wish there could be a Dev thumbs up button for quality posts, because you pretty much nailed it.) -- Ghost Falcon
Given the incredibly wide range of AT and powerset combinations we have in CoH (it's at what... 600+ now?) I'm curious about what you started off with, and whether your preferences have changed since?
The first character I ever created was a Claws/WP Scrapper - not a Wolverine clone, honest - with a red and black costume and the name Razerz (very 90s Dark Age anti-heroic, I suppose) I didn't stick with her very long, and scrappers are... okay, but by no means my favourite AT. I still like Claws/ though. Finally deleted a few weeks ago, when I was reorganising my character list. So what was the first character you ever made in CoH, and do you still play them? (The inspiration for this thread was me musing about the number of brand new no-vet badge players I see running Dominators, which strike me as the most newbie-unfriendly AT of them all, given how relatively complex they are to play.) |
