According to wikipedia, Avatar made about $2.8 billion in the box office. Should be interesting to see how badly Avengers trounces Avatar's record.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
I've got to say that I am surprised (and I am happy to say so).
Not that I doubted this particular movie would be popular, but just in the historical sense... A super hero movie with a full team of very different make-ups, primary-color costumes and quite over-the-top characters not only was massively successful and popular... but shattered Harry Potter weekend numbers?
I'm not one to drool over these sorts of numbers and records, but, man... I remember going to see the first X-Men movie and how, going into it, all comicbook fans were buzzing about how this one movie could make or break the potential future of comicbooks to movies (due to Hollywood's streak following approach and fear of stepping outside the realm of a sure thing).
Congratulations, Marvel, Avengers and comicbook fans... and to all you movie-goers who weren't/aren't comicbook fans (now maybe you get to understand the appeal)!

In Truth, only the "mine is better than yours" crowd gives a crap about the the box office money. The rest of us want to see TWO successful cbms. I want both of these films to be successful but, more importantly, I want both of these films to be GOOD. Let the fair-weather wannabe fans and company muppets worry about who makes more. The real fans want good films. [frick] the rest of the dumb crap.
Good going Marvel/Disney.. this movie was a true success.. and was worth all the accolades its getting.

Yeah I was pretty happy to see that it did so well...
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and thought they did a great job all the awesome characters in. It really lived up to the hype for me

Something that I've noticed the two times that I've seen it:
During the previews at the different times and crowds, the crowd was talkative and such, but when the Batman trailer came up, it was dead silent. You could pin that up to the fact you had to listen closely to make sense of it all, but that went for other trailers as well, they just happen to get quite for this one, heh?

That said though, I don't care for the competition in $$ that the franchises(batman specifically, the other DC movies aren't -that- bad of $) are generating, I'm just happy both are doing well and will probably continue to do so. Which means more entertainment for me!

One of the friends that I saw the Avengers with Sat. night is a much bigger DC fan so we were talking afterwards and he's like, "so when are they making a JL movie?"
Poor guy...I sure hope DC makes a good JL movie like this Avengers one but...I just don't see it happening when they just keep rebooting franchises AGAIN....

I'd like to see another hulk film. Hopefully, there's enough financial momentum to get one airborne. I think Ruffalo could hit it out of the park with a smart script.

I'm pleased for Joss Whedon, given the number of times he has been smacked down by the big media companies.
I really should do something about this signature.
Joss has yet to disappoint. Cabin in the Woods was so over-the-top amazing and to be followed up by this... Wow. Not since the Matrix have I wanted to see a movie repeatedly in the theater. The opening weekend pretty much guaruntees the next film and to have Marvel's big bad looming for it... I can't wait.

Also the Superman movies need the reboot.
But good luck getting a Wonder Woman movie, a better GL movie.... etc.

Avatar opened over the winter holiday season with pretty much NOTHING to trip up its run. So it was able to hold top stop for longer, generating buzz for doing so and driving more people to the theaters.
We're starting into Summer Blockbuster season here.
Even if Baytleship doesn't dent the earnings, MiB will.
Then Prometheus is probably going to hit it as well, a month out.
Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter could go either way.
Brave is a Pixar flick. It's going to do well, at the expense of its competition.
New GI Joe flick will whittle off some.
Then we're into July and it's all about Spidey up front, followed by Batman at the end of the month.
Thinking Avengers will probably land in the solid 1-billion territory though. Which, for the first blockbuster of the summer of blockbusters is an ADMIRABLE place to be.

Saw it for the second time today with someone who's not remotely into superhero films and even they were raving about the performances and the script and of course, the already-legendary Hulk/Loki moment.
Joss Whedon has now hit the A-list (some would say a decade overdue), Marvel Studios has proven to Disney their approach works, and no less than about three actors have had their careers given massive boosts (Downey, Hemsworth, and Evans), one has had a massive exposure (Ruffalo), and at last, at long last...
The geeks have inherited the earth.

MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS Set For A Shock Weekend Record Of $200.3M Domestically
Deadline confirms that Disney and Marvel Studios made a record $69.7M at the North American box office yesterday after earning an impressive $80.5M on Friday. While official figures aren't set to be released until a little later today, Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble is currently on track to add upwards of $49M to that total, making a final sum of $200M a guarantee (we'll be sure to update you when those figures come through later today or tomorrow). Basically, The Avengers has managed to do what Voldermort failed to acheieve across eight films; they have crushed Harry Potter, smashing the previous record held by The Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169M) with ease.
