Avengers shatters all boxoffice opening weekend records.
If people think any of the fights were too long, just wait until the DVD's with all the deleted scenes
It's even better when compared to how big it opened - it means that not only did a lot of people think it was worth a second viewing, but that word of mouth for it is also very good, bringing in first time viewers at the second weekend.

There's also marketing, which can be added into the budget, or taken out, depending on what the studio wants to prove.
I thought the movie actually cost 200 mill to make?? Evry time I see the cost it seems to have gone up another 100 mill.
|
For example, with a massive flop like John Carter, Disney could hide its marketing budget under general Disney marketing, which would help hide just how much money it lost them.
Adding in marketing budgets to filming budgets can also help generate hype by using big numbers, especially if it can be pushed into a "most expensive" catagory.

For a metaphorical representation, she's peeved about this:
She was all grumpy because "Avengers" trumped out her "Hunger Games" so soon. She understood that it isn't a zero sum game, but she wanted the rosy period of recognition for her favorite to last longer.

Ha! That's pretty apt, actually. In more than one way.
That moment came up specifically in the discussion during the car ride home. She didn't like it much, she thought it too random and out of place in the moment of the film.
I liked it because it showed the Hulk keeping memory across appearances and doing something 'playful' if a bit violent to a cohort...
In short, an example, I think of the contrast between someone who grew up enjoying Marvel comics and someone who didn't sitting in the audience for the film.

I thought it was a cool little character moment. Kind of helped to reinforce the idea that the Hulk is a "loose cannon" even at the best of times. It also led into the Hulk's final chaotic ragdoll moment with Loki and made that little "outburst" seem that much more realistic coming from this huge green dude who we now know is randomly willing to punch even his own friends around much less the bad guys.

From what I've seen lots of people who didn't grow up enjoying Marvel, loved that part.

Avengers now surpasses Dark Knight to become the #1 comic book movie adaptation and 11th highest grossing movie of all time.

Marvel-Disney hopes to get the new Hulk TV series going in 2013 (TV series will NOT be in the marvel movie universe it will have its own continuity) and a new HULK movie in 2015
I am not sure this is a good plan, but we will see...

When the Hulk is handled properly on screen it works pretty well. But as recent movie history shows there seems to be a lot of ways to mess up the Hulk character-wise. Hopefully the few minutes of cool Hulk action in the Avengers won't encourage a rush to churn out hours worth new (but bad) Hulk material.

Yep, that's what I'd hope for, but I'd have greater expectations on the movie front.

The idea of a TV series, with the issues of budget and it being disconnected from the continuum with which the average audience would connect makes me leery.
(edit: related to series budget, while I could see an exec thinking that the Hulk change would be pretty cheap to repeat, the computer effects in new scenes for the Hulk himself, and the special effects of things going SMASH would get pretty high on a week in and week out basis. And we all know that if they try to go character driven and not let the Hulk out fairly regularly there would be... issues... with ratings unless what they did do was done very, very well.)

I honestly don't think it'll drop off that much more until next week when Men in Black 3 comes out. I have no real desire to see Battleship and don't really think it'll eat into Avengers ticket sales too badly. I suppose we'll see soon enough.

Well the new TV show was in development before Avengers hit the screen and I don't think Marvel quite anticipated how well the Hulk would be done in Avengers or how well the fans would receive him. There were no plans for a third Hulk movie (that I'm aware of) until Avengers blew the box office away.

I fully expect Battleship to sink on its own but I'm sure Avengers will help sink it too.

MIB3 may make a small dent in the Avengers momentum, but that would be it. Nothing against MIB 1 ,2 or 3 at all, just stating an observation.

Didn't really mean to imply MIB3 would completely murder Avengers' numbers. Just figured it would be a strong enough movie to come along a few weeks -after- Avengers to finally cause its numbers to dip significantly. At any rate it's safe to say MIB3 will be a much better movie than Battleship regardless of what either do to Avengers.

Oh I know you didn't mean to imply that, to be honest I don't think even the upcoming Dark Knight movie is going to surpass Avengers. Take some money from Avengers, yes.

Mrs PRAF also thought the Avengers fights went on a little too long, especially Thor v Iron Man. But the Aliens? I'm pretty sure they where deliberately left mysterious for future instalments.
I really should do something about this signature.
