Avengers shatters all boxoffice opening weekend records.
It may be pretty close, given how well Dark Knight did... but it had Heath's impact lifting it, too... so, yeah, I expect Avengers to remain king for quite a while (unless Spiderman really surprises).

Superman 3 and 4
Star Trek 5, 9 and 10
Highlander 2, 3 and 5
Xmen 3
Any Friday the 13th movie after number 2
Well Heath's performance and death definitely gave the Dark Knight a lift. However as with many trilogies, I expect the upcoming Dark Knight to be good and entertaining but also showing signs of the franchise running out of steam as it were.

I'm looking forward to both Prometheus and Dark Knight but I really doubt either of them will outdo Avengers.
I still talk to people who don't even realize that Prometheus has anything to do with being in the same general universe that the Alien movies were set in. And although I'm quite sure Dark Knight will make hundreds of millions of dollars it just doesn't seem like it'll be able to seriously challenge Avengers. To be brutally blunt about it I just don't think Anne Hathaway "alive" has the same kind of drawing power that Heath Ledger "dead before the movie" had.
As for the new Spiderman I'll probably end up seeing it but I'm honestly not -that- excited about it. Almost seems like Spidy's gotten a little too much exposure in the last 5-10 years to get me overly hyped about it. By that same line of reasoning if somebody managed to produce a movie that even remotely involved Wonder Woman I'd probably throw a hundred dollars worth of ticket sales at it instantly.

Fixed that for you.

As to Wonder Woman in any movie......I just don't see it. Unless DC finally wakes up and tries to interlock their movies like Marvel did and lead up to Justice League, I just don't see Wonder Woman happening. Batman gets rebooted after this Dark Knight movie and supposedly the new Bat movie will interlock with the upcoming Superman movie as a potential Justice League spring board.....but Wonder Woman should get an origin movie unless they fit her in like they did when the JL cartoon started. Also Hawkgirl and GL and Martian MAnhunter may need to be brought in the same way they were in the JL cartoon pilot movie, the Flash should be able to hold his own movie though.
As to what movie could topple Avengers:
1. Avengers 2
2. a very well done Justice League but again DC really needs to wake up regarding non-Batman movies.
3. George Lucas turns Star Wars over to others and authorizes/approves of a complete remake of all 6 movies starting with Phantom Menace. All 6 movies of course have their scripts tuned up a bit to ensure they all fit together nicely and remove or reduce certain absurdities (Jar Jar, Greedo shooting at all.....)
Highlander 3 = rewritten Highlander 1
Highlander 4 = decent attempt to bring first movie and TV series together, this movie is proof that bad editing will kill a movie as there are about 3 versions of it, theatrical, cable and DVD
Highlander 5 = worse then two.
Only a 50% drop off from opening weekend, which is great for a blockbuster.

The international appeal of Avengers seems to be much higher though, which means that could translate into about $1.5, $1.6 billion worldwide. That would project Avengers to be the third highest grossing movie worldwide after Titanic and Avatar.
I think it would be difficult to surpass Titanic and take the #2 spot in this original release of the movie.

It looks like it might have The Dark Knight's legs, or maybe even a bit better than that, which would imply Avengers eventually coasts to a $650million-ish domestic tally like six months from now.

The other thing. Both the top two had extended releases and a re-release before going to home video. That helped pad the numbers a bit...
While I want to see Battleship >_> What?! It looks mindlessly entertaining to me. I don't think it will do as good as Avengers, I do think it might have a chance to topple Avengers out of first place for the weekend.
It's new. It looks to have big special effects. And never underestimate the power of mindless entertainment!
Though it does seem to have bad word of mouth going for it, this doesn't mean the general movie going population won't go see it.
Lucky for them, they seem to have already made back their production costs plus extra from the foreign market.
Also have to think, people have seen Avengers. They may not be like some of us who've seen Avengers more than once, and thusly, Battleship is new, Avengers they've seen already.
We'll know for sure in a few days, but I wouldn't count it out just yet.

I still have my original Battleship game in a beat up box in my basement. I've played Battleship a lot when I was growing up (along with Risk and Stratego). I'm pretty sure Battleship didn't have invading aliens from the sea.
Haven't we had enough "Aliens invade Earth" movies in the last two years? Even with ignoring Transformers 3.

Is Battleship only just being released in the US?
It came out here around a month ago. Without making much impression. A damp squib.
Given the choice, I chose to see The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! A far superior nautical movie (with added Brian Blessed).
I really should do something about this signature.

Does the movie contain the classic line from the commercials: "YOU SANK MY BATTLESHIP" ?

From what I read on Wiki about the movie, the aliens fire weapons that look like the pegs in the game. What a tie in.

edit: non-supers, I still doubt Prometheus will top it either.
