A smaller percentage of the workforce (Seems roughly 1/3rd belonged to the union) causing everyone to lose their jobs isn't right, no matter how you slice it it.

Not saying that Hostess isn't totally infallible here either. It just seems like opting for no job, instead of a pay cut, in an economy where people are having problems finding jobs in the first place, is pretty stupid.
  2. Well that's a nice punch in the gut.

Indeed, it is joint trademarked by Marvel and DC Comics.

Regardless, I really like what I'm reading.
  4. I agree with most all of that article..

    Agreed.

Kinda like the 92' Dream Team *cough*
  6. I don't understand why we don't see a "Sidekicking" system very often in other MMOs..

There are a few that have limited versions of it..

GW2 auto-down scales you depending on what zone your in. But you still retain most of your powers and traits/talents, so you're a bit more powerful than a "level appropriate player"

FFXI implemented an Exemplar system sometime after I quit playing. I believe it scaled everyone's level down to match a specified player's level. Also scaled down gear stats too. The exemped players also got full experience. I remember jokingly saying to my brother "Wow, if you wanted to you could level in the Dunes from 10-75!"

EQ2 has it in some fashion, no idea how it works.

And of course Cryptic games have it, well at least CO does.. Does STO?

It just seems like such a great system for so many companies to just kick it to the side like they do. Perhaps they don't want to bother with the balancing headache of stat/item/trait scaling? Or maybe they don't think it will be utilized much because everyone just rushes to end-game anyways.. Who knows, but I miss it in every game I play that doesn't have it..

    Outsold WoW? Highly doubtful.

WoW had a few major advantages going for it.. It was set in the already-popular and loved Warcraft Universe, it was released by Blizzard (Who had a highly devoted fanbase), and its timing was perfect. By perfect timing, I mean it was released before the MMO market really got over-saturated. It didn't have a huge plate of competition and had the opportunity to really help redefine the genre. CoH also shared in this timing advantage though.

I believe WoW's massive popularity took everyone, even Blizzard, by complete surprise.

I once worked with a kid who could literally quote that entire movie word for word..

I would go up to him and just start saying some random sentence from the movie that I happened to remember. He'd then start spouting off the rest of the scene's dialogue until someone came along and shut him up lol...

  10. Haha very nice job.

The voices were close enough that I would recognize them without anyone telling me who they were, so that's good enough in my book.
  11. That I will likely never find support classes as robust and dynamic as they were in CoH..

Forever to be shoehorned back into the "heal bot/super squishy" role..

Faultline revamp, Croatoa, misc other new zones, and especially the IO system. All of that would have likely been saved for some sort of "Expansion" in other MMOs.

We got a lot of added content in this game, and it didn't require buying half a dozen expansions in order to obtain.

While I do love the game proper, I think you're right. I likely would have lost interest long ago if IOs never came about.
  14. As I reach out and try to fill the CoH-shaped hole in my heart, I am constantly reminded of just why I loved CoH so much, and played it all these years...

Here's just a few reasons why I was/am a dedicated CoH fan. In no particular order.

    Teams

CoH is one of the few MMOs that I felt really got teaming right. Teams are not only easy to get into, but you can join one right out of the gate. They can be fun, hectic, rewarding and non-essential (meaning you don't *have* to team). More and more MMOs these days seem to save teaming for loot-farming or end-game reasons only. Nothing wrong with that, but it's more fun to me to be able to team to level up.

A fair take on the "no holy trinity approach". Many games are trying this, some more successful than others. I once again feel that CoH pretty much hit the nail on the head. Sure, you could take along a dedicated tank and healer/buffer. But they were seldom required for the vast majority of content.

Lastly, since teams were so easy to get into, they were also easy to get out of. I never felt "locked" into a team after I joined. Knowing that if something came up mid-way through the team I could easily back out. This is substantial to those of us prone to having unexpected interruptions.

    ---------

    Interesting powers/abilities

This is another personal biggy. I loved the powers in this game. Nearly every one of them felt substantial. They *did* something.. you *felt* them, they were flavorful and you were excited to get them. Buffs and Debuffs were especially strong, potent, and fun. A far cry from the barely-there versions of other MMOs

For what its worth, I also feel similar about WoW. It had a lot of neat interesting abilities that really made classes feel unique.. I say had because Blizzard seems to be hell-bent on standardizing every class. They took away Paladins freaking auras for crying out loud.. a core mechanic for that class since its inception... no, since Warcraft 3! But that's neither here nor there..

    ----------

    Dynamic Support

I love Defenders and Corruptors in this game. They were done splendidly well in my opinion. Not only were they great at support and team play, but could also pull their own weight around as well. Sure Defenders might have taken a bit to get off the ground, but once they did they became quite potent. Compared to the "Support" of other games they are much more active and fun to play. They have truly spoiled me when trying to make support in other MMOs. Where you are plagued by being squishy as hell, and only relegated to a very specific role. Usually spamming heals and using barely-there buffs once every 30 minutes.

    ------------

    Costume Editor

    'Nuff said.

    ----------------

    Invention System

The IO system let you warp and distort the preset restrictions on your AT, or you could use them to further boost their primary role. I love IOs, best damn system I have ever seen in an MMO.

Well those are the couple of things that tend to pop in my mind while journeying into other MMOs. How about you folks?

    I was wrong.

For those unaware, in CO there's an auto chat banning system where if you are petitioned more than X number of times by other players, the game will auto silence you from chat. I think from *all* chat. For a long time. It was meant to allow players to self-police RMT sellers.

Which in and of itself is prone to abuse, but that abuse can lead to your own account being banned if you do it too much.

    And then they went F2P.

Remember all the debates we had here about how important it was to be careful about what free players could do, what premium players (who didn't sub but bought something at least once) could do, and what VIP subs could do? In CO, F2P players can petition towards auto-banning.

The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. PS: I have eight F2P City of Heroes accounts.
    That is.. pretty ridiculous..

And ya, there is a LOT of CoH hate going on over there. It got to the point where I filtered out the Zone chat because all they were doing was spewing anti-CoX propaganda (along with a lot of male genitalia jokes, poking fun of how you'd pronounce that acronym), and I didn't want to read that ****. For the record, I am very tolerable of BS chat, I lived through the dreaded "Chuck Norris joke-riddled Barrens Chat" of Ye' Olde' WoW, after all.

Then there was a gem of a player verbally assaulting another over ZONE chat, because he *dared* to join the new Alert system under level 15. Then everyone dog piled the poor guy.

The apparent lack of teaming I also find a bummer, unless you want to spam Alerts. My first goal in the game was to make a sort of "Corruptor/Defender" type of character.. After finding the support system hella clunky, and no one willing to team, I just said "screw it" and respecced her pure DPS.

Granted, I'm still having an alright time.. But I dunno how long it will last. I also find most the powers quite uninteresting.. Can't put my finger on why, but the powers in CoH just seemed so much more substantial.
  16. So.. I notice the crafting system is gone? A shame, I actually liked that..

Replaced by these "mods".. I guess I need to combine these mods with gear that has slots or somesuch? When does this gear start dropping?

    Helps improve performance too!
  18. Channel CoX, cool, thank you =3

I'll join it if the server stops lagging every 5 seconds, guessing the servers cant handle the flux of CoH players ;P

Not to mention, many attacks have no cooldown, or no appreciable cooldown.

Hell, when I first played it near launch all I needed was one or two solid attack powers, with no cooldowns, and the rest of my power choices went either went into defensive choices (which you needed a lot of back then) or flavor choices.

Right now I'm tinkering with a few lowbies, trying Alerts, and tryin gto get back into the game. What are these "CoH channels" people have been mentioning? There doesn't seem to be a way to search channels like there is in CoH.
  20. My absolute favorite thing about Coh was the pugs. Easy to get into, easy to manage, no guilt trip if you had to leave.

Aside from the Burst Alerts, which I've tried a few of, and they were quite fun for a bit, is there anything like the CoH teaming system in CO?

Last time I extensively played it was during launch, and I don't think I teamed more than once or twice, and when I did we sat around trying to line quests up more than we actually did anything..

No one even teamed for the instances that were around.. I had to slowly solo those for the quests (Thank god for the overpowered TK Shield back then LOL)
  21. I remember when they had those origin logos on the character select screen, was pretty bummed when they removed them.. Which was around CoV's launch iirc?

Interesting how the origins all refered to human back then though. "Superior Human" must have evolved into Natural. I suppose so we could use it for Aliens and whatnot.

To add fuel to the fire, you only seem to rip that texture when you have males in the scene...

I've seen a norm map, and what could either be an alpha map or a specular map, along with what Arcana posted (which could also be a spec map, or masking).. really the grayscale things can be for a wide array of material settings.

Also, glad to hear it helped VoodooGirl =3

Arcana, in simple terms you need to turn the Tris (3 vertices per poly) into Quads (4 vertices)

This allows loop cuts, and better Subsurfing.

Quickest way to do this in Blender is Alt-J, though its automated and still leaves some funky edgeflow.

Highest quality way to do it is Retopo(Retopology), but that can be time consuming.
