Titan Network: SOPA Blackout

Hey all, I just wanted to post a quick message so that no one will worry that the Titan Network (including the Paragon Wiki) is down due to technical or security issues. We will be participating in the site blackouts tomorrow, January 18. We are still discussing internally the extent to which we will be participating, whether it will be a "soft" blackout (an interstitial that you will have to click through to get to the sites), a "hard" blackout (a total site outage with information about why the site is temporarily unavailable), or something else.

Hopefully everyone has already had enough advance warning due to other major organizations, including Google, Wikipedia, and other major sites participating. It has hit most major news organizations as well. So don't panic, follow the link that will be up, and read up on the issues and why we feel that SOPA is a direct threat to the Titan Network and the Internet as whole. If you want a head start, you can read up on the bills here.

Whatever we decide to do, the site will be fully restored and functional on January 19.

If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up on Skype (tonyv.paragonwiki) or drop me an e-mail at tonyv@cohtitan.com.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

Regardless of what you do, I'm glad you're participating in the protest against SOPA.

I do believe that SOPA and PIPA, if they passed, would even have serious repercussions for City of Heroes? The kind that would make the old Marvel lawsuit feel like a walk in the park.

Quick where's the .gif with Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge?

I totally appreciate you and Paragon Studios making an official stance on the issue, here.

I would just like to point out that several things have changed and SOPA is unlikely to pass now that supporters have backed out and the person who put the bill up (whatever the name of that is... I'm stupid with terms) has now said he wants to change the thing that is what a lot of people have the most problem with...

personally though I think the whole SOPA/PIPA thing was never likely to be passed and was just a way to get NDAA passed while all of us internet people raged at SOPA... Sure SOPA would kill freedom of speech on the internet but NDAA can be abused to such a degree that you've already lost the war and most people didn't even know it.

Also, pre-emptive. I apologize if the second paragraph is a little bit too political, but NDAA's as relevant and more important considering it did pass and has a much wider breadth that includes everything that SOPA/PIPA affects and is far worse... but i understand if you want to erase that part... people should really look into the NDAA though.

Cool news, thanks you two!

Mr. Reid will surely be confounded tomorrow when he tries to put together the top DPS chain for his DB/MM blaster and finds himself having to rely on Mids alone.

Seriously though, good on ya.

Actually there is a Hacker Internet being set up. A group has gotten together and launching low earth orbit satellites that will allow users to connect to the internet/sites... if i remember right within the next year you'll be able to pay (i think it said $300) to get a satellite sent up for you that will be set up to work the best for you...

It's not a 100% replacement because it is low earth orbit which means the satellites go faster or something which causes latency problems but they're also talking of setting up higher orbit satellites that wold be more expensive or other solutions.

Basically with this the internet just got taken out of the hands of the governments of world and that is a good thing because well... read world news.

Also this along with the whole DNS addon that you can get for your browser makes SOPA 100% a waste of time even if it were passed and just wasting more money that the world cannot really afford at the moment.

Please. By all means, continue to support people who want to be able to stomp all over your rights in the name of their desire to profit regardless of the crap they shovel.

The only reason you think this is "lame" is because you don't understand what's at stake here and are more concerned with simply consuming whatever's been handed to you.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Before you say it's lame, you need to read up.

These bills are from groups that are so bloated with self-importance they've sued for copyright violations of the rights of people that they don't represent, and had given the accused the right to post their content online.

I'm all for copyright - but these people have a shoot first, shoot later, and sue if they ask questions mentality. If either of these had been law back when marvel sued... the game, website, and forums would of been shut down (and possibly crypticstudios.com and www.ncsoft.com) without notice, most likely. Depending on which version of which of the two bills, judges wouldn't even be involved, as I recall.

Mind you one of the groups behind these pieces of legislation compared VCRs to the Boston strangler. The exact person who said that is dead, but I'm still waiting for a nice quote of "the Internet is to [Copyright] are like Hitler to those of Hebrew decent."

Our ability to provide this good service will be significantly compromised by these laws if they are passed. They are aimed squarely at sites that host a lot of user-generated content, which is almost exclusively what the Titan Network is.

Hopefully even if you think this is a "lame internet protest," you can see what kind of position it puts us in. By making web site owners personally responsible for everything that is posted, it would dramatically hamper our operations. We could no longer allow the City of Heroes community to edit the Paragon Wiki, upload avatars to our forums, allow player-written bios in CIT, or any other unvetted user-generated content because we would be at risk of someone posting copyrighted material. This would result in us--not the infringer--losing our site, getting sued, and possibly even thrown in jail.

Believe me, if I thought that personally going to Washington and declaring these bills dead would do any good, I would. I've already contacted my Congressmen, and I've been preaching about the issue to friends, family, and coworkers. Maybe you see this protest as pointless, but 1) we are hoping to reach even more people to help educate them on the very real possibility of the Titan Network being gone under these new laws, and 2) we want to add our voice to the numerous companies, organizations, and individuals who want to make it clearly known that we oppose this legislation.

Hope this explains a bit more. If not, then we apologize for the inconvenience, but it's the first time we've done something like this, and the sites will be restored to normal functionality at or around midnight on January 19.

Even with the condition, you. guys. ROCK!

It's not how many times you get knocked down that count. It's how many times you get up.

More sites should be doing this. However, I'm thinking Wikipedia and Google will really make the protest felt hard.

Wow have I been in the dark, never heard of SOPA until I saw this in the dev digest....

I glanced over the bill, this is an American thing or are they partnering with other countries or how exactly would it work?
