Titan Network: SOPA Blackout

It's an american bill, but depending on the severity, it would have worldwide effects (especially since the main internet infrastructure is in the US), and also especially if other countries see the US as starting a new 'thing' to do.

And this is one of the many reasons why I still like/play CoX

If this forum allowed for it, I would "Like" or "Favorite" this comment.

There may be some users who cannot follow the "where is Titan" link in our blackout page. It goes to a post within the Announcements subforum of the Titan Network main forums, which appears to be partially blocked. Oddly enough, the reporting user can see the rest of the Titan Network forums, EXCEPT the Announcements subforum. So if you get an error that says something about not having access, it's not you...it's something between your modem and Titan.

Rest assured the post on the Titan forums is pretty much the same as the one here, if a little expanded because we're allowed to be political over there.

Notice the key word, "today." Freudian slip, Mr. Chairman? Mr. Chairman, who's already dreaming about tomorrow, a tomorrow where those irresponsible, freedom-loving companies WON'T enjoy any freedom in the marketplace?

Mr. Chairman, you and your cronies are ten kinds of wrong. And one day, the good guys will see to it that people like you are labeled as the criminals you are.

CNN's labeled it as an epic battle between Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Fifteen years ago, Internet based entities would not have had this kind of power, but nowadays they've become a forced to be reckoned with. I certainly hope this forces the suits in tinseltown to take notice once and for all that they can't just railroad over everybody with their army of lawyers. They're so eternally afraid of change; if they'd all originally had their way, we'd still be buying our albums on vinyl and never be able to own personal copies of movies. They always get pushed into new paradigms kicking and screaming (and litigating) all the way.

On the onehand SOPA is crazy bad.

On the other hand if it passes maybe all the internet companies will move to Europe, which will mean a lot more IT jobs...

Say that when the thread devolves into a political shouting match.

Well, more jobs over here, but SOPA is (IIRC) worded so that no matter where the site is located, it can be taken down with no due process (ie going through the courts)

Well the problem with that is... Many counteries would consider that info terrorism.

>.> Considering one could argue that the point of the black out is an act that is meant to cause fear and panic to force people to recognize an issue and take proper action it could be labeled as terrorism, which is a flimsily defined word, which means hypothetically if the US decided to do that every single company that decided to do this could be considered terrorists which means they could be arrested and held without trial as well as have all their assets seized and controled by the US government under the NDAA...

Someone could argue and it could be done... This would circumvent the courts from ever ruling against the NDAA which it should do, but will never get a chance to.

I actually think that SOPA should pass to the degree that when it does it would cause enough of a stir that they would get to the Supreme Court and it would be labeled as unconstitutional and thus repealed... and it would also label the Internet as a Free Speech zone thing that would fall under those protections. My feeling that SOPA and PIPA are being carefully worded so that doesn't happen with every try at this they are going to get slicker and slicker until they get it passed and if that does happen the court will likely favor it rather than what it should do.

As far as effecting the rest of the world...only in so much as the majority of the structure of the internet is in the US as the US is behind, i believe it's either the EU or the UK, that which has ruled that internet is a natural right type thing that would go along with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And the Japanese internet would go largely the same way as it's more or less in the same camp with the high speed internet being free for all type thing. The other countries of the world would be largely unaffected politically as they already have these types of things in place and everywhere that doesn't realizes that it's against what the US is about and/or realizes how much the internet is needed for things such as what has occurred over the past year.

Basically it gets removed from DNSs forcibly... however people have already taken to creating their own DNSs and such so it would be useless.

What would happen is someone for example searches for...
cityofheroes.com
...and would find nothing
BUT
If they were to type in something like...
64.25.35.107
... They'd still get to the site.

Though not CoH for some reason...
Netflix works if you want to test it... 69.53.236.17

Most effected would close unless they had a client base in Europe. If they depend on US clients it doesn't matter where they move operations if the sites can't be seen in the US.

Hm. I'd heard that House Majority Leader Cantor has pretty much shelved SOPA due to 'concerns' (probably 'concerns we'll all lose our jobs next election' but hey, whatever works, right?). Unfortunately, PIPA is still going ahead. Thanks, Reid, you dribbling clot.

It's funny, really. About the only people wanting this legislation are the conglomerates. I'm seeing conservatives, libertarians, liberals, small companies, individuals, just about everyone is looking at this and saying 'OH HELL NAAAAWW!'.

Care to list some that are happening on the 23rd? By all accounts that i can find (granted quick google search of "23rd January blackout") it appears that the date shifted for them!

Current blackout participants of one form or another that I know of:

Google (logo only)
Wikipedia
XBMC.org
Ars Technica (theme change, still covering)

(list taken from http://sopastrike.com/ )

Unlike some of the semi-useless game-oriented squabbles this forum deals with from time to time there are occasional "political shouting matches" that are important enough to openly talk about because they have the serious potential to collectively affect -all- of us who enjoy playing this game. Obviously if things get out hand the Mods can always step in, but thankfully Zwillinger/Paragon Studios are willing to allow for special situations like this.
