  1. I went premium for primarily one cumulative reason: the many dreadful design decisions that catered to a small group of current subscribers and failed to excite the interest of and attract new users in sufficient numbers to sustain the game long term.

The creativity stopped with Going Rogue expansion. When they could have used that stepping stone as a means to move into other areas (into outer space and beyond to other worlds) and expanded skill levels (60, 70, 100 anyone?), they started the abysmally divisive Incarnate system which split the community into the haves and have nots; raiders versus solo/small teamers; min/maxers versus casual players. The Incarnate System failed miserably at giving players reasons to use the store more frequently and signaled to all that it was the end of end game planning.

Like it or not, it was poor design decisions that were the doom that kept this game from attracting the larger audience it needed to sustain itself for the future. and it is the poor design decisions that will forever haunt the memories of the studio leaders who now see the results of their actions upon the employees who depended on their direction as a means of providing income for themselves and their families.

When I finally tired of fighting the battle against what Paragon Studies was doing, I had no choice but to move on to another game more conscious of what is needed to sustain itself long term. I will miss what CoH used to be but not what it had become and was becoming.

That's the only character I've ever semi-retired simply because of bad gear rolls, something I didn't think was possible in CoX until trials came around.

All I can really say is that I don't really spend much time playing the trials. I'll be point blank here: when I think about the incarnate system, I really want to log off and play something else. The incarnate abilities and the way they are acquired remind of the kinds of things some players pay real life cash to acquire on the blackmarkets of action rpgs.

For me it's not so much about the trials themselves but about the strangehold they on advancement. As missions they are okay. As content that needs to be run over and over and over and over and over I really dislike them. So I just stopped.

I feel the same way about the "Summer Blockbuster" event FYI. I never did get the procs I needed. Rather than run those I just play an alt, or failing that, another game.

I wish the game would stop bribing us into content by putting a highly desired reward behind a very narrow band of content. It may get some players to play it, but it does the opposite to me. It just makes me wonder why I am wasting my time doing this when I could play something that is actually fun.
Echo. I wholeheartedly agree with all you said. Similarly, I got 1 character to T3 Alpha out of 10 level 50's.

I finally gave up on the future of CoH and went Premium, playing a character only when my primary MMO is down for maintenance. I just wish this dev staff had the foresight to see the Incarnate system, while it may appeal to a specific group, is not a viable end game solution for the long term.

CoH brought me so much fun and enjoyment for so many years and then it all was ruined by the woeful Incarnate stuff. I fought the good fight for a long time then finally had to give up, shut up and go do something more fun.
  3. Started on Virtue way back when. Got too crowded for me. Been steadily transferring all favored characters to other less populated servers where I rarely encounter other players.
  4. I solo exclusively 100% of the time and none of my 10 level 50's had a problem reaching max level.

The bigger question is 'why doesn't the team game of CoH work for you?'
    And my response would be:
    1. I don't want to share the drops
    2. I don't like negotiating roles
    3. I like solving in-game problems and determining strategies on my own
    4. I can wipe my nose without needing a team to help
    5. I have extremely low tolerance for bickering, politics, petty jealousies, etc.
    6. I like setting my own pace for play
    7. I feel more like a hero on solo but more of a minion when teaming
    8. Teams are for those not skilled enough to do things on their own
    9. Teams remind me of those despised high school and college cliques that only the it people could join
    10. I prefer being in control of my own destiny and not having it be dependent on the actions/inactions of others. "I am the captain of my ship and the master of my fate".
    11. It really doesn't matter to me if team flunkies get more and better stuff faster. I'm not keeping score or trying to keep up with the Joneses.

No MMO offers a "well rounded" RPG experience- it isn't structurally possible.

But hopefully you'll enjoy a different set of similar good guys beating up a different set of similar bad guys in a different similar setting.

MMOs are what they are. Other games focus on different aspects of the experience, but fundamentally they all come down to beating on stuff for rewards.
And some posters are obviously limited in their knowledge of what some other MMORPG's are capable of doing with the RPG aspect. Your loss, not mine.
  6. I must say that I agree with much of what the OP states and have felt that way for quite some time.

My biggest complaint about CoX is that it is so limited in scope. No matter the new Issue, it remains: some kind of similar good guys beat on some kind of similar bad guys in some kind of similar settings. Some players think (and I used to be one) that the limited scope is this game's Strength - it does one thing only and does it well. But now I see that as more of a detriment than an asset.

There just isn't the variety of things to do to keep me happy any longer and sustain the feeling that I'm role-playing a character to the fullest possible extent.

So, I am taking the advice of many on these boards by taking a long break and going Premium (should start tomorrow) since I've found another MMO that offers what is for me, a more well-rounded RPG experience.
  7. Oh great. More automated travel. All of CoX just got Fatter, not Fitter.

Next step. Completely eliminate zone scenery and just have all kinds of mission doors lined up in neat little rows in one nondescript area for quickest transport yet.

Not for me. I enjoy the scenery and relaxing a bit between mission doors. I don't even use the mission teleporter I already have. Hurry, if you must, but I prefer a more leisurely pace in my games.

Two thumbs down. Instant savings: 700PP
  8. Really big spender here. I've bought 6 (36 cards). That's 1/100,000th of the total sold. Using stipend points of course. Without my ginormous purchases, the whole thing is a fail.
  9. OP: Turn off the notifications to your phone. I've been Twitter following CoH and Matt Miller (Positron) since early last fall and all they mostly post is fluff stuff. Certainly nothing important enough to get a notification about. I just read their stuff when catching up on my normal timeline.
  10. 1. Echoing what was said above about the Hybrid slot. If they don't make it available to solo players in I23, my once 45 hours per week -> now 3 hours per week -> will most likely go to Zero (0) hours per forever.

    2. The second thing that would make me instantly quit is if they actually listened to the solo community; did right by them; trashed the incarnate system and created real end-game content, I'd quit due to heart failure.
  11. Once I was afflicted by altitus but I found the cure.

A few weeks ago I put the finishing touches on the one character that totally satisfies what I'd been looking for. Since then, I have no desire to create any other characters or try to duplicate this one on any other server.

I'm done. Finished. My end game is compete. This character is now my one and only. I've no desire to do more.

I've moved on to more fulfilling and challenging games now but keep this account open just so I can return every few days and spend an hour or so with my beloved character friend.

Now, if you want to do damage, most damage procs will work to your advantage. The best, of course, being Reactive since Fire is heavily unresisted and it will come with a resistance debuff. The drawbacks to procs based upon damage is that not every character can really benefit from that damage too much. If you already have a high damage output or if you have slow but strong attacks, the few extra ticks would do less damage than your damage aura.

If you want to take down AVs instead of the run-of-the-mill enemies, the two powers to look at are Diamagnetic and Degenerative. Most of an AV's defense comes from their regen, and both of these powers can reduce it. Diamagnetic can reduce regen directly, and can be quite effective at doing so. Degenerative will decrease their max HP which will decrease their regen, but it does decrease it less than Diamagnetic. Degenerative does toxic damage, however.

If you want more defense, the three to look at are Diamagnetic, Gravitic, and Paralytic. Diamagnetic has a 5% to-hit debuff, and with the option to have it work 100% of the time essentially adds 5% defense to all of your stats (then 10%, then 15%, ect...). Gravitic and Paralytic are niche powers. Gravitic is good if you have a -recharge powers, but it isn't heavily based on -recharge like psionics. Paralytic is good if you have damage reducing powers (Kin melee, Kinetics, ect). Outside of those two situations, I see little use for either Gravitic or Paralytic.

Of course, if you just want the fun stuff you can slot cognitive and pretend that Quills has Contagious Confusion slotted in it.

That gives me more detailed info to think about.
I don't take on enemies above EB and I fight EB's on -1. I just don't enjoy tough. long drawn out fights. The way I play the game is for relaxing fun.

This character is built around the quickest AoE and PBAoE kills possible. The defense is good at handling Alpha strikes and then is able to keep Bosses off-balance with topped out Ripper and Air Superiority. Longish single target fights just are not in my personal game plan so additional defense is really not a high priority.

I'd love to see the effects of Contagious but honestly most spawns don't last long enough for it to kick in and really make a difference. Diamagmetic then may be the best choice just in case I ever do decide to take on some toughies.
  13. S, if I go with Reactive, it seems that taking the Radial branch would be most beneficial to my character.

    thanks for the feedback!
  14. I have a Spines/WP scrapper who is decked pretty good with IO sets including Hecatomb, that has just opened up the Interface slot. I have enough salvage to put something into it but, after looking over the list of available choices, have no idea what would be good to slot because none of the choices looked good to me.

I've got a Tier 3 Spiritual in Alpha and a Tier 2 Void in Judgement. This character is pretty awesome at +2 x3 w/Bosses.

Looking for suggestions for what would could be done with Interface to improve the character. (As usual, 100% solo play, not building for team play at all).

    Thanks!
  15. I won't be buying the vanity pets but don't mind others having them as long as
they (and all the AT pets) are kept out of the Auction house; the vault; the train terminals and the University crafting areas.

If I have to trip over, dodge, shove out of the way or kill the sound to do what I want to do, then I do mind their presence in the game.
  16. Not one dime spent beyond the sub fee on 2 MMOs. Any left over money is spent on my grand kids.

But because the next series is already mostly developed, they'll probably continue with it. But, my money is on the next series being the last.
My guess is you are spot on.

I lost interest and stopped playing them after #4. If I had paid for them, would not have been convinced money was well spent.
  18. DL'ed for my iPod Touch 4G w/5.0+. Works just fine and is quite a bit handier than the Safari shortcut to the status page. I like being able to filter only for the servers I am active on. Good job, Kat!
  19. No. Never. Absolutely not.

Joined a couple of globals in 2010 and found them to be boring, inane and totally devoid of useful information. Now I delete all the chat tabs I can and edit out broadcast, local & private messages when setting up a new character. Only info I see is mandatory game info. LMTF alone while in-game. Color that Bright Red.
  20. In addition to playing CoH, I'm also playing another MMO - the one with hobbits in it - and as I advance into the higher levels there, my one thought of CoH is that it stopped way, way short of what it could have become.

While the other game grows with each expansion by adding more territory; greater depth to its story; 100's of new solo quests; a few small team and raid quests; and absolutely nothing that has to be repeated to gain the major rewards, CoH remains basically a quaint little game where everything worthwhile can be gained comparatively quickly with little thought or time investment. And, oh, how much more so the devs of that other MMO understand the true potential of solo play and ceaselessly work to keep that at the forefront of their development goals.

But that isn't an all bad thing to be. I think of CoH as my MMO comfort food where I can come into it and play relaxed "point, click and shoot gaming" for a bit before heading off for the deeper immersion in a wholly realized RPG fantasy world that the other game provides.

CoH - massive unrealized potential - but, oh well, what can you do about it.
  21. I'm all into the relaxed play mode. Spines/WP Scrapper is my fave followed by a Bots/Traps or Bots/Storm MM. The Spines/WP is the first one out to play every day for a nice easy romp. Only bad thing is that it doesn't really hit its stride until level 32 when you get Throw Spines although getting Ripper at level 28 helps a lot. Up til then it might be a bit of a struggle but afterwards, they are a lot of fun.

I know that if all I did was play one character I wouldn't have lasted more than a few months. Similarly, if all I did was grind one fire farm solo I wouldn't last a week.

Most people also tend to desire human contact, so promoting team activities encourages players to have a wider circle of friends and provides more "social inertia," making it more likely that people will stay because the people they know are still playing. Players seem more likely to quit when all their acquaintances drop out, and the smaller your circle of friends, the more likely you are to quit as well.

You may in fact be different. But you're the exception: most people need variety to avoid burnout, and are bound by social interactions.

If you want to do nothing but grind the same thing over and over, you can still do so and reap maximum rewards by making multiple alts and grind the same thing out on each of them in turn. Yes, it will take you more time to accomplish the same thing. But that's the entire point of these exercises: to keep us subscribing.
I would suggest that those who subscribe long term do so because they play the content that they favor most in the game. For some that favored list will be quite long, for others rather short. What I do not approve of is the dev staff trying to force players out of their comfort zones to grind through content they really don't like but with rewards they feel they cannot ignore. I would bet most players stay for the fun over the rewards but when the rewards start taking away from the fun, they lose interest and leave.

I simply refuse to fall into that trap. Since I resubbed in August 2010, I have produced 6 level 50's by playing only that content I enjoy playing. Each character is developed along a custom path that fits within my comfort zone. I don't care how long it takes for each character to develop as long as I am having fun and not being bored or stressed with it.

As for the DA arcs, I did not find them fun to solo at all. Only Heather's arc meets my needs to run it 3x within an hour or so. By tossing that 2x Emp bait out there, for no good reason, they are trying to force me out of my comfort zone to do content that I personally to not find to be compelling. I choose to ignore it. A few will try to do it. And others will get bored with the grind after a couple of weeks and move on.

I just feel they could have conceived of other strategies that reward progressive involvement by the players. Like say, extra threads for doing 'clear alls' within the arcs or two chances for components at the end of every other arc. Strategies like those just seem more like they are more respecting of player comfort zones than the crudely conceived and implemented 'TMG 2x Emp' system they just tossed out there.

I don't like your intrusively weird obsession with the idea that the devs are out to 'get' the playerbase.
There is no indication in my feedback that they are out to get the player base. It would seem logical that in raising the maximum reward, the minimum would be raised proportionally as further incentive for the players to play the content more frequently. As it is now, most will play an easy repeating mission once per day for the ten then ignore it.

This is not a 'out to get the players' criticism but a questioning of their logic and consistency criticism.
  24. Normal TIP missions appear silently now. No "jingle" like with drops.

Taskmaster General and 2 Emps is nothing more than a bribery system set forth to encourage players to satisfy Positron's intrusively weird obsession with trying to get players to play all the content. Again, why should he care what we play as long as we are PAYING? I intend to ignore the TMG and just do what I want. Missing out on 2 Emps per week is hardly a death blow to character incarnate progression.

The 10 thread reward for the completing first repeatable mission each day is good but the other times run that day should have been raised to 5 threads from 1. They do some things that indicate they want players to do a greater variety of content but here is a case where they are discouraging it.

Other than those observations, the patch seems to correct a few annoying problems and is a worthwhile DL.

    Your DXP Plans

Yay! As I do with all DXP weekends, had a fun time and accomplished all my goals by not playing a single sub-50 character. Great time to let the lower level ones rest and accumulate patrol time. Thanks, Paragon, for providing this event for the contrarion.
