That's not actually what would happen. What would happen would be more insidious. SOPA would allow content creators to send a take-down for that icon, even though its not even here, its only linked here. NCSoft would have to notify the user and request a counter-claim. In the absence of the counter-claim, NCSoft would have to then remove the offending link. If NCSoft doesn't comply in a timely manner, the one making the complaint would then be allowed to notify businesses that themselves do business with NCSoft, such as advertisers and financial processors, to stop doing business with them. The safe harbors that currently exist for this would be significantly curtailed.

When presented with that possibility, the logical thing for NCSoft to do is to simply ban linking on the forums, to eliminate all that work and hassle. It could decide to more quickly ban players that otherwise violate SOPA's requirements. It would definitely place more strict limits on what could and could not be discussed, and in what ways.

Whether any specific content creator would invoke SOPA in a particular way is hypothetical. But what internet operators would do to protect themselves from SOPA is less hypothetical, because those actions would likely take place proactively. And that illustrates the chilling effect of SOPA and its relatives.

Well... That's a much more detailed version of what I called "locked down".

For those saying this issue is closed... i just got around to watching yesterday's AOTS and they had Reddit's co-founder on who brought up that there is yet another bill that is being brought up called OPEN

MovieBob has a video talking about why this will continue on after SOPA and PIPA as does AngryJoe.

This may actually be a good thing and save the US in the long run if we take and compare to Rome and why it fell, that being that it stopped caring... Maybe if the government keeps going more and more insane this quickly people will once again realize that they need to be active and involved and we'll start getting things done again... and things fixed up.

That's crazy talk

I'll admit I'm very anti-politics (very apathetic towards it all).

Haven't been around most of today, but just want to say glad to see Paragonwiki went black. I took both Virtueverse and Unionverse down, they'll be down as well until Midnight. I had a few people tell me they had no idea about it until they came across sites that were blacked out. This bill is especially a danger for Virtueverse and Unionverse. They're primarily original/creative content posted by users. It would be a monumental task for me to try and screen every single line of text or image that goes onto the wiki by users to ensure it doesn't include someone else's copyrighted content.

Thankfully it seems that today has had the effect the protesters were hoping. Congress members seem to be leaping away from the flaming sinking ship that is SOPA/PIPA, though its a bit sad that it took this level of effort for them to realize it was a terribly written bill by people who have zero idea how the internet actually works.

So I guess we'll have to wait and see if this rears its head again after the elections or if it comes back in another form.

If this whole situation has shown anything is that being 'anti-politics' doesn't solve anything, it makes things worse. If everyone had been apathetic towards these events, because "meh, politics" then this crap would have quietly passed.

If you look at twitter feeds and plenty of other places you can see loads of reactions from 'anti-politics' people who still don't have a clue as to what's going on.

hehe I think I would "lol" at some of those "tweets" (ugh ).

I am apathetic towards quite a few things (which is my personal issue that I try to fight/get over)...but when I saw this and then the Google's website change, I actually did sign the petition as well as email the Senators/House of Reps. people for my state....something I've never done before.

By doing so I achieved the "morally superior to those that didn't do so feeling"!

Because of all this I learned that Senator Lindsey Graham is actually a man.

Maybe it was PIPA - or maybe they removed it, but I seem to recall to fully protect themselves the notified party (in the scenario you describe NCSoft) would actually have to take it down without notice to be fully protected from prosecution by the copyright holders. They could then go and give notice, etc.

OPEN isn't the right answer to the problem it's trying to solve but it's a better one.

That was a Gawker site.

They're about on par with the National Enquirer for reliability. They're attempting to be The Onion, without any real humor behind them. They post crap just for the INTARWBZ RAGEZZZ and all the subsequent clicks they (and by extension their ad network) gets because of it.

If you don't read any other article that has been linked to here, please at least read the one ImpulseKing linked to.

It will put a smile on your face and make you feel good. If you're an American, it will make you relieved that some senators are on your side. If you're not an American, it will make you relieved that some American senators are on your side. Because I think we've established that we're all in this together. It's a co-op!

Those who have said the war's not over are correct. But if you signed a petition, sent an email to Congress, blacked out a website or otherwise spread awareness, you've helped win a battle. That's how wars get won.

If you didn't do any of those things, you'll get your chance. If the war never ends, then we'll have a lot of battles to win. But look around you, at all your favorite online games, communities, devices, educational aids, and so on. We own our Internet. For many of us, it is a substantial chunk of our lives. Actually, those "barbarians" were loyal to Rome until Rome turned their back on them. It was a General that was screwed over by Rome because the government decided it didn't need to honor it's debt or those men who were loyal and fought for Rome. None the people really knew that the "barbarians" were betrayed and didn't really care because they were in economic crisis created by splitting the nation in half and because Rome was Rome, the center of the world and if it wasn't happening there then it didn't matter. If it wasn't happening to them it didn't matter. And you know those barbarians were, after all, barbarians... or as we would call them today, foreigners, so who cares about them.

They stopped caring which resulted in their infrastructure breaking down, their government not working, their economy not working, and really them becoming uneducated people in the center of the world of culture... It was all one big cluster that created a series of events that lead to Rome (part of it) to be sacked by Barbarians, but really eastern Rome really didn't have much longer to go when it was sacked... it was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I'm just curious when I get a bill that allows me to forcibly remove and indefinitely detain politicians whom I feel are violating my civil rights without due process of law.

For the one asking about Anon's involvement..

Their presence is about to be felt. Yoda's feeling a disturbance in the net, spiderman is tingling, and super man's brow is wrinkled.

I think it's fair to say there's going to a carpstorm a brewin' and the epic turnabout is soon to be seen as not fair play.

Good luck intarwebz.

Yes, and history is repeating itself in many ways. Now when can we get to the sacking?

Although I suspect that if Harper keeps going the way he's going, with his lips firmly planted to American backside, there will be no sacking and I will be joining you in Denmark.

Sadly, Congress is structurally corrupt. As an example, did you know that if you get caught engaging in insider trading, it can pretty much trash your life. If a member of Congress does the same thing, it's not illegal for them. Nice, huh?

Well, it's after midnight, and we've re-enabled all of our Titan Network sites. As someone posted above, today DID have an impact. Several Congressmen who were supporters and even co-sponsors of the bill have back-pedaled today and rescinded their support. Best of all, the blackouts today have generated a LOT of discussion and prompted people to get informed about bills about "techie stuff," ones that normally would cause people's eyes to glaze over and that would have been easily ignored until they were passed into law.

We at the Titan Network would like to say a HUGE "Thank you!" to everyone who expressed support for us, especially to everyone who took the time to sign one of the petitions and/or contact their Congressmen, and also to Zwillinger, who allowed the thread to stay open and supported us by posting here, causing it to show up in the Community Digest.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
