Discussion: A Death Revealed....
Why do so many people think Recluse will break down when his opposite is bumped off? He doesn't care whether States is dead, alive, or just sleeping, he wants him OUT OF THE WAY! He'd probably offer half of arachnos in thanks, with a stern glare that says "Don't you dare accept this."
Grandfather: She doesn't get eaten by the eels at this time.
Grandson: What? Grandfather: The eel doesn't get her...I'm explaining to you because you looked nervous. Grandson: I...I wasn't nervous. Well, maybe I was a little bit concerned but that's not the same thing. Grandfather: Because we can stop now if you want. |
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
What the Hell was the point of the mystery and build up for so long to just spoil it yourselves? That was stupid. Way to ruin something that could have been an awesome bit of storytelling. I guess CoH really is all about grinding to the end and skipping all the content, now.

Knowing something in advance but only one detail with no context to it whatsoever means there can not be an awesome bit of storytelling still? How does that make sense?

I also didn't like this early reveal. Poor idea but I can see how the studio would hope to create a buzz over the event and get some hype. Ah well.
States was beyond cheezy and almost a cliche. He was also Jack's alter ego. Good riddance to both. This game has enough fromage.
I hope the STF isn't removed. It is one of the TFs I don't mind. The earlier TFs really suck so don't don't away one of the decent ones.
Well, as a writer myself, I'm extremely disappointed in the manner which this supposed reveal/spoiler/whatever has been dropped. The whole point of these arcs has been teasing and leading into a big reveal, and to maintain interest in the structure of these stories, this being the first.
How does openly advertising and declaring this encourage people to play? Zwillinger, I appreciate your position as Community Rep, but you can't spin somethingt that won't spin. To go on and say 'well, the interest is in why he dies and what comes out of it' is rendered moot by the fact that pretty much anyone who plays this bit of the story now knows what's coming and there'll have been at least a month of speculation (including what's started right now) as to the implications and fallout.
Because of this, I'm sitting here and wondering 'well, what's my incentive to play out the arc?' Tagging it Who Will Die and then telling us just that defeats the purpose of setting up the suspense!
And to the rest of you discussing it...shouldn't this be your actual concern? I don't have a lot of faith in a storytelling team who can't at least try to maintain an air of mystery about it. Does it actually matter if there were signposts? Weren't people actually more interested in playing the story every month to see what happened and reacting to that on its merits? I was. I didn't try and second-guess the story, I didn't try and put any pre-supposed notions of like or dislike on a given NPC because of non-game reasons (and it saddens me to see so many going 'yay, Statesman's gonna die because Jack Emmert was an idiot', etc) and importantly, I was happy to let the story surprise me as it came along.
Now I'm thrust into a situation where the speculation becomes when/if he returns (I'm sorry, but until the actual advertising for the game changes, it's not a done deal) and why we should continue to maintain an interest in the story.
I'm really genuinely saddened by the spoiling of the story, and it'll take a bit to get my interest back in it.

Part of Sister Flame's Clickey-Clack Posse
In the words of my Mother, "One less white man in the world."
Something to cause rampant speculation and a dozen dev headaches:
Statesman being an incarnate, maybe his death will help unleash power and unlock the next two slots ;D They did say they wouldn't be coming out in Issue 22 and they did say they'd be out together
I don't get why they just ruined it. Maybe our guesses were getting closer and closer, but they were still unconfirmed. I'm bumbed and disappointed.
On another note, Ms. Liberty will take his place. The battle between the Phalanx and Recluse needs a Cole.

If that's a reference to the FREEDOM PHALANX novel (and I really think it is), it should be "Grandpa, can you fly to heaven?" (From the conversation Jessica has with Marcus after Monica Cole's funeral.) And I agree - this is totally spoilerish with the arc not even out yet. What the hell was Marketing thinking? (Though the picture is awesome.) Michelle aka Samuraiko/Dark_Respite |
I am gonna go out on a limb here and say that I suspect I know who may be taking his place. At the Player Summit, the developers stated that they were "moving towards" bringing Hero 1 back into the fold. He would be a logical candidate to step up and take the helm, even if Statesman was NOT going to die. So, I think this may tie into moving that storyline forward.

Wacky theory:
Statesman may die, we may resurrect him, but at the end of the arc he's hanging up his cape and cowl..and passing it on to Hero 1.
How this will work as Hero 1 is British and fricking carries Excalibur, I have no idea.

Okay, let's assume Darrin Wade or whoever is after Statesman's power, they take that power and then what? It's just power.
To make yourself a real presence in the world, you've got to get some kind of support base in the world, a chain of islands is not looking too shabby. So, mad dash scramble to usurp Arachnos' power. Recluse dies. Thereby, giving both heroes and villains the same sort of possible position. |

Now I just wonder how Glacia factors into all this. She's the 5th SSA contact up in Peregrine Island.
Along with Specialist Greer, the 6th SSA contact.
Not going through entire post to see if anybody else mentioned these but....
First, anybody else say "WOOHOO!!" when they read it was Statesman who died??
Secondly, ever consider that Statesman's death is not THE death hinted at by the title of the arc?? Maybe this is like Harry Potter where Harry needed to die so that Voldemort's death would be permanent (dear HP fanatics, I know that's not entirely right, but I'm summarizing). If you remember the CoH comic books, Manticore killed Statesman to win the favor of Prometheus (dear CoH fanatics, Iknow that's not entirely right, but I'm summarizing).
Also, tell me if I missed something, but the title of the arc is "WHO will die?" and not "ONE will die". Why then do so many sound as if there's only one significant death in this arc??

Maybe already said but my thoughts since they announced the Statesman & Recluse Tribute Helmets were that Statesman dies, and somehow Recluse takes the road to redemption, changes his name and costume, and take the lead of the Incarnates against the Praetorians and the Well.
I'm actually quite surprised. And really, anyone saying this kills the suspense forgets the most important part of what Zwill said:
"You know WHO dies, but you don't know HOW."
The 'How' has to be the most important part of this. I mean, we're talking about freaking STATESMAN here. Guy who punches things and lightning explodes everywhere. Someone with a direct link to the Well. How exactly could anyone just kill him? That's the suspenseful part. And if this person/thing could kill Statesman, what does that mean for everyone else?
Also, I'd be fine with Ms. Liberty. Honestly, after Part 3, I have no problems with Longbow's activities anymore. If Ms. Liberty goes full Vigilante, I'd have a characters who would be ALL too happy to help her. It would be fine time for a little eye-for-an-eye payback after being forced to act like an idiot the last 3 parts of this arc.

Seriously, what does it say about a guy when every other version of him ever encountered has been a meglomaniacal, evil, murderous *******? The only real difference I can see is that the Paragon version managed to keep everyone fooled...
