Short answer: most of the actual "game" is server-side and not preset in the code you install on your computer. The client just translates raw data into pretty pictures and lets you tell the game what you want to do... all the actual movement, power use, inventory management, AI, etc... happens on the server. That means any attempt to make a single-player version would require recoding the server software to directly interface with the client instead of connecting over the net, and would significantly increase system requirements. And by "significantly" I mean you'd need your own blade server to run the game...
Alternatively, a ton of recoding to scale the server software down to single player levels and integrate it with the client so it can run on a normal PC... which would probably take about half the work of writing a new game from scratch. -
Quote:I'm sure a lot of people are, or at least were, tired of fantasy gaming. On the other hand, people who got tired of it a few years ago and who have played mainly non-fantasy games since may well be back in the mood for elves and dwarves... I know I for one don't really get "over" a genre of games long term, I just get burnt out and need a few months' break if I play the same genre too long.On another note (and not for a minute knocking the OP) aren't people just sick to the back teeth of fantasy genre games? I mean granted, it seems that all the games NCSoft has axed have been games that have been something other than poxy elves, dwarves and paladins and they've done so as a result of people not playing them very much, but what I don't understand is why.
-
NCSoft may have done a lot for us in the past, but they also shut down Paragon Studios and tossed all of their employees out the door without notice. They didn't just decide to close down the game, they fired everyone on the spot and shut down everything but the actual servers without notice. That isn't something I'm prepared to forgive... not just because I'm mad that the game is ending, but because I feel for the entire studio of people who showed up to work on August 31 only to find out that they no longer had a job.
Maybe that's normal procedure for large scale layoffs. I neither know nor care. I just know that I would be angry with any corporation who did it ("everyone else does it" is not a valid reason for being total jerks) and when it also means my favorite MMO is going away, then yes... I'm even madder. -
I'd stay, though losing all of my veteran rewards would be annoying. I might not stay if I lost the various powersets I'd purchased though, particularly if they remained in the game and the only way to get them was to purchase them again. I would hope that if for some reason all of the data on who had bought what was lost, then all of the permanent purchases like new power sets, costumes, and extra enhancement slots would be given to everyone rather than forcing those who had bought them to repurchase.

Quote:Earth and Beyond was a fun game and I for one was annoyed when it got cancelled, but at least EA didn't just walk in and fire everyone one day. They had quite a bit of warning and it was (as far as I recall) a pretty standard MMO shutdown rather than coming completely out of the blue.Wow, that would make me I hyprocrite, if I had ever heard of earth and beyond. I assure if if I had been an e & b fan and ea **** canned it like ncsoft did with coh I would not be playing tor.
And to be fair, E&B wasn't exactly setting any subscriber records when it got shut down... it may very well have been losing money. -
The way I look at it NCSoft proved themselves to be:
A) heartless bastards
and
B) idiots
and as such I have little desire to support them in the future. Shutting down an entire studio with one day's notice? That is, quite frankly, inexcusable. It may well be common practice in large corporations, but if a lot of other heartless bastards do the same thing it does not make it any more acceptable. And shutting down a studio that was still making money was, quite bluntly, stupid in the extreme. Yes, NCSoft lost money last quarter. Boo hoo. They had a ton of one-off expenses and any sane company would simply accept the losses and wait for the investments to pay off. Instead, NCSoft apparently chose to look like they were "doing something" just to pacify investors, but any corporation that prioritizes quarterly (or annual) reports over long term profitability is stupid beyond belief. All too many of them do exactly that, but the fact is that it hurts them in the long term... and often the executives don't care, because they consider looking good and getting their fat bonuses more important than actually making the company stronger.
So bottom line... NCSoft acted like a typical greedy, stupid corporation and made a knee-jerk reaction to try to spin a bad quarterly report. Are they any worse than many other corporations? Nope... plenty of them do the same things. Except that this particular stupid knee-jerk reaction killed my favorite MMO, so I'm mad. And because I'm mad, I'm going to do my small part to screw over the corporation that pissed me off... meaning that I won't be buying any future NCSoft products and I'll be bad-mouthing them to my friends and anyone else who will listen. Not because it's the right thing to do or from some moral high ground, but because I'm mad and want payback. It's just that simple. -
I've got a lifetime sub to Champions (worst purchase I ever made, in hindsight) so I might give that another try, but otherwise I'll be sticking to single player games for a while. There just aren't any other MMOs out there that really appeal to me now...

Quote:The KB is also (fairly) radial if you fire off Explosive Blast at point blank range while surrounded by enemies. That makes it annoying for some playstyles, since normally targeted AoEs are better than cones if you like getting up close and personal but for Energy Blasters it leads to a lot of scatter. There it is. My Energy blaster is a hover blaster, so virtually every time I've used this power, enemies have indeed been scattered in every direction. My apologies for the misinformation! Thanks for the clarification, Hawk.
Of course the other reason Explosive Blast feels like it causes a lot of scatter is the fact that it isn't a 100% chance of knockback, so even if you fire it from long range and knock everything in nearly the same direction you still break a clump into two groups: those that got knocked back and those that didn't. Energy Torrent is similar, but for some reason EB has always felt more "scattery" to me. -
The OP might also be talking about the Zephyr KB IO, which is more expensive but saves you a slot if you drop it in a travel power (assuming you aren't planning to enhance the travel power for speed or endurance). I believe that one is purchasable with A-merits, and if you are planning a mostly-SO build with just a -KB IO then running tips to confirm your alignment and doing a couple of SSA missions might actually be faster than collecting 75 merits for a Steadfast if you don't do TFs. (Obviously that doesn't apply if you've done enough story arcs to already have 75 merits...)
Though if you aren't going to be buying other IOs I'd just purchase a -KB recipe off the market... 200 mil is more than enough to get even a Zephyr and still afford all the SOs you need. Though on a Fire/Dark Tanker I'd strongly suggest also doing tips and SSAs to snag the Miracle and Numina's recovery uniques, because that will really help your endurance if you aren't using set bonuses. Personally I'd just frankenslot everything and end up with 8-9 SOs worth of enhancement per power for around 10 million inf, but that's just me... if you don't want to fool with the market SOs do work just as well as they ever did. -
Quote:I would guess... slowly? You should PM me how you managed it with a dark/dark defender with SOs, because I couldn't manage it after multiple tries.
Dark/Dark Defenders don't have a lot of damage but with their debuffs and heals they're pretty safe. Plus he probably used temps or inspiration dumps... that's how I generally handle EBs on my squishies: munch half a tray of insps, smack them down hard (or harder than normal), and eat the rest of the tray if it takes too long.
Regarding that laser sword game, I actually think it's pretty good. That said, I don't see myself playing it for 7 years like CoX, and the fact that a freaking speeder bike moves about as fast as a guy with Swift + Sprint here is annoying as heck. One of the best things CoX did is to not use travel time as one of the main ways to gate progression (at least not after lowbie levels). Laser swords are fun (actually, huge blaster cannons are better) but that game feels more like a vacation from CoX than a replacement... I'll probably be back here more and more, at least until they get actual piloted space combat over there.

Quote:Blazing Aura has a couple of significant problems. Firstly, it uses a lot of endurance (nearly as much as Hot Feet). Secondly, it has a very small radius, only hitting things in melee range while Hot Feet goes out to 20 feet. Most importantly, it usually won't make the slightest difference in kill time. A melee range damage aura is nice on a Tanker or Brute, but a Fire/Fire Blaster has Burn and Fire Sword Circle plus Fireball and massive ST damage... nothing short of an AV that is actually standing right next to you is going to be alive long enough for damage auras to do anything. So there's no point in Blazing Aura because Hotfeet is the superior of the 2?
Hot Feet is handy because it adds some damage to targets that aren't in FSC / Burn range and therefore will actually live more than 5 seconds and it helps you avoid damage my making enemies run away (slowly) which makes them attack less often. Blazing Aura, on the other hand, mostly just does minor damage to things that are seconds from dying anyway.
If you want an AV killer and can afford the endurance then by all means take with Blazing Aura... it'll add a decent bit of damage over a long fight. If you are mainly concerned with normal spawns I'd skip it though. -
Making it a toggle is a great idea... they could make it like Phase Shift or Steam Jump, where it automatically detoggles after so many seconds (whatever the current duration is) but you could turn it off early if needed.

Quote:So Statesman dies in #5, there's a big all-out brawl between the bad guys and the remaining Phalanx members in #6, and in #7 someone gets a demon to erase everything that's happened since Issue 9?Once it's in the game, it's an already happened.
Now, it's something that's going to happen. But how will it happen? What could possibly lead to the demise of Primal Earth's Champion of the Well?
This approach is something that's been planned for awhile now, taking a cue from other famous, or infamous, comic book deaths. -
Quote:Shows how often I play Electric...Elec has a TAoE and PBAoE too, and Ball Lightning+Short Circuit slightly outdamages Irradiate+Neutron Bomb. Rad only pulls ahead if you're willing to use the cone as well.
I always think of Short Circuit as a sapping power but it does seem do do decent damage.
-
Really, anything with a targeted AoE plus /Fire is good. Electric Blast isn't that good for AoE damage but it does have a decent TAoE so Electric/Fire works well. Rad is probably the absolute best to pair with /Fire simply because it has both a TAoE and a PBAoE, but Fireball is one of the highest DPA AoE attacks so Fire/Fire is also very nice. Beam/Fire would probably be the worst fit, since Beam has redraw and lacks a targeted AoE outside of its mini-nuke (which can't be used every spawn even on a top end build).

I love the Leaping pool. My personal take on the powers:
Combat Jumping - Fantastic in-combat mobility, immobilize protection, a bit of defense, and a place to drop another LotG recharge and / or a Kismet 6% to hit IO, and it costs virtually no endurance to run. Pretty much my go-to power for non-fliers when I want a place for a Kismet.
Super Jump - My favorite travel power for general use. Plenty of vertical mobility plus very good speed means it's usually the fastest way to get around aside from teleport and it works much better than teleporting indoors. Afterburner is faster, but that requires a second power pick and can't be turned on and off repeatedly. Super Speed is faster in wide open zones, but being able to jump across rooftops instead of running around buildings usually makes SJ faster in most places. Plus you get to play the "try to get from point A to point B without ever touching the ground" minigame to make travel less boring...
Jump Kick - Pretty much sucks, just like all the basic pool attacks that aren't Air Superiority. It isn't completely useless like Flurry though, so if you need extra damage on a Controller or something it can be semi-useful.
Acrobatics - Kind of endurance heavy but very handy on some squishies. The KB protection can be had easily enough from IOs but Acrobatics also protects against a single hold. On a character with high defense and no mez protection that can be huge since things aren't too likely to land a second hold before the first wears off. If you just want KB protection I'd go with IOs though.
Spring Attack - Very fun though only semi-useful since it really doesn't hit that hard. I like it for adding some extra AoE to single target focused melee characters like my Bane Spider, but if you already have decent AoE it's kind of redundant unless you want it for thematic reasons. -
That depends on the situation. If by "top ST damage" you mean top possible damage with no other considerations then sure you need to factor in melee. However, Blasters tend to die a lot in situations where DPS really matters, so unless you are on a team with strong buffs and / or aggro control you are really more concerned with top damage you can stay alive while dishing out. On a S/L softcapped Blaster that will likely be melee + your best DPA blasts, but on a range capped Blaster it will probably be a pure ranged chain. I suspect Beam Rifle is right up there with Ice or Sonic when it comes to the sort of all-ranged ST chain a range-capped AV hunter would use, and redraw becomes a non-factor in that situation.

Quote:Can't Oil Slicks be killed but not lit by other damage types though? Or was that just part of the long-term bugginess of the power? Because I could have sworn I'd seen non-fire / energy attacks destroy them before...The Oil Slick lights when the target is defeated, regardless of the type of damage that defeated it. It happens to be immune to all types of damage except fire and energy though, so in practice you need one of those two types to do it. It doesn't trigger based on the damage type though, just on defeat. In theory if you had access to unresistable damage you could light it with that.
-
Fire and Beam Rifle are the best primaries for ST damage... Fire has Blaze (the highest DPA attack a Blaster can get) but also has a slightly weaker than normal tier 2 blast, and Beam Rifle has the extra damage from Disintegration plus a full strength tier 2. Of course the absolute best ST damage a Blaster can do comes from mixing Blaze in with high DPA melee attacks (Fire/Electric is probably top of the list) but for ranged ST damage Beam Rifle is also a contender on hard targets.
Ice Blast is a pretty hard hitting ST set since it has full damage tier 1 and 2 attacks and one of the best tier 3s that isn't Blaze. I'd rank it 3rd on hard targets and 2nd (just behind Fire) on things that will die before Disintegration really matters when it comes to pure ranged ST damage. /Ice is pretty middle of the road on damage, but it has lots of mitigation to help you stay standing in melee so that's something. Ice/Ice isn't going to do as much ST damage as an /Electric or /Energy Blapper or a Fire Blaster with a secondary that has decent melee if survival isn't an issue, but it will outdo most everything else (probably including Beam Rifle once melee is factored in, since Beamers can't mix in melee attacks without redraw penalties lowering their DPS) and will be able to use melee in situations where most Blasters couldn't. -
Quote:It's in the game, but currently "when die, do this" effects are based on the mob type (on death powers like ghoul heals) or situation (ambushes spawning after a defeat). The problem is that these trigger when the mob dies, period... what would be needed is a conditional on death effect that only went off if the mob was killed by an attack with enhanced KB on death. That probably wouldn't be hard to do with a code change, but I don't believe there is currently a way to specify "when killed by power X but not power Y" as a trigger (Oil Slick suggests "killed by damage type X" is a valid trigger, but that doesn't mean "killed by one of these specific powers" is). Having a power with such enhanced death KB generate a pseudopet that used a KB power set to "if target = corpse" a server tick or two after the damage is dealt might work, but only if the engine can currently apply KB effects to corpses (which it may or may not be able to do) and you'd still have the problem of the power doing its normal KB first and the enhanced KB kicking in a fraction of a second later. I'm not sure how good that would look. With Nightstar and Seige, the countdown doesn't trigger at all if the other is dead. So it definitely does a check when each of them dies to trigger the countdown. This is same with basically alot of common missions in the game eg. In AE, you already get when this mob dies, trigger this objective. So this effect of when die, do this, is already in the game.

Quote:Because once he switched to his dev account and pulled TW from the store he dropped back in the channel and chatted with us for a minute. He told us he'd been on his private account, noticed our conversation, freaked out a bit, and fixed it as soon as he could. So how did you know a dev was playing their personal account?
He also mentioned that the people who bought the set could keep it (we'd been wondering that after it vanished from the store and we realized it wasn't supposed to be out yet) but warned them that it was buggy in its current form so use it at your own risk. Until it vanished we weren't even sure if TW being in the store was a bug or not since we were playing right after the Tuesday patch and the notes weren't up yet, though we suspected it was since there had been no previous announcement.
(I think it was Zwillinger but I don't remember for certain.) -
Quote:I assumed he was talking about positional defense, which no epic shield provides. 32.5% Ranged defense is a lot cheaper and easier than 45% regardless of what epic you pick. If you go S/L defense then 32.5% plus a resist based epic shield is actually slightly harder to get than 45% with a defense shield, though the difference is only about one set bonus. But if he's doing an epic resist shield it's not going to be easy to get 32.5 in def without the epic def shield.
I mean, he said "the latter is cheaper and strains the build less", and if he got to 32.5 without an epic def shield (and is an AT that gets an epic shield), then it would be no more of a cost or strain to take the epic def shield instead and hit 45 than to take the tough and stay at 32.5.
There is no way to reconcile your interpretation with his "cheaper and strains the build less" comment.
As far as total mitigation goes, 32.5% defense lets you take about four times as much damage as 0% defense (you get hit 12.5% of the time instead of 50%) so with 50% resist that would be 8x normal mitigation. 45% defense is 10x normal mitigation, so under perfect conditions softcapping is better... however, in practice you're one unlucky roll away from a faceplant when pushing the softcapped defense to the edge while defense + resistance gives you a bit more reaction time to pop a green if things go bad. You can also boost 32.5% defense to the softcap with one Luck, and with the resistance you get 20x mitigation then... increasing softcapped defense to 20x mitigation requires quite a few oranges so decent defense + resistance is easier to boost to really high mitigation levels (through inspirations or buffs).
Overall I'd prefer 32.5% defense plus 50% resists on a character with mez protection. However, a mezzed squishy is often a dead squishy so with no mez protection I'd rather softcap and minimize my odds of being stunned (since many stuns have a S/L component). Sure you can use Break Frees, but it's a lot easier to avoid running out of them if you don't need one every fight (assuming you fight large groups of enemies with multiple stuns... if you cherry pick your foes to avoid mezzes then it's obviously a non-issue). -
Maybe Titan Weapons are coated in Flubber and gain energy every time they hit something?
-
-
I remember that Titan Weapons leak... we were chatting in one of the Virtue global channels and someone noticed that Titan Weapons were up in the store. The funny part was that a dev was playing on his personal account and happened to be in that channel and he immediately switched to his dev account and yanked it from the store, which is why it was only up for a very short time.
