Maybe don't boycott NCSoft

I don't mean this to be as snarky as it's undoubtedly going to sound, I promise. But how about we not boycott anyone based on rumors? Some of us are diligently trying to save the game, and I really think that calls to boycott companies are not going to make any positive difference, and can only alienate us with companies whose cooperation we might need to keep City of Heroes up and running.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

There's not much that supports the theory, but even if this was true, that doesn't excuse the unceremonious way NCSoft axed the game. However, if this rumor is ever confirmed, boycott BOTH NCSoft and Perfect World.

Grrrrrrrr ...

THERE IS ABSOUTELY ZERO EVIDENCE CONFIRMING THAT WHOLE "5 YEARS LICENSE" THING. THAT WAS ALL SPECULATION MADE BY A PLAYER WHICH HAS BEEN TAKEN AS FACT. THERE ARE OTHER, MORE LIKELY REASONS FOR THIS.

Guys,

This rumor is just that. A rumor.

That is unlikely the case, as more info comes up.

Apparently NCSoft purchased another company called Ntreev Soft for 96.7 million. This plus unexpected or badly predicted profits for the quarter from the free to play model of Aion likely resulted in a loss of 6 million in last quarter. (Note: I'm not saying Aion had losses, I am saying it did not perform insanely amazingly, it just did moderately amazingly)

That strong-arms a movement to restructure the company in some way, even if it's to axe low profit studios, to start making up for it.

In manpower alone, Paragon Studios likely cost about 6 million a year (if you assume an average of 75k cost per employee a year, an actually low number when you consider health insurance and other benefits) plus any office space rent.

Given Paragon Studios yield the lowest returns on the company, it became the immediate target for axing.

Except Valve.

And if I'm not mistaken, that player was me! (At least I brought up the whole 'IIRC, the engine is actually licensed from cryptic' thing, which then was said in another thread by the player I was responding to as the license had expired, and it went from there )

Right now, there's absolutely no evidence to support any theory. Hell, for all we know, a rogue government agency forced NCSoft to kill CoH, or they'd murder the debs!

I think we should all hold off on the chants for 'BOYCOTT!!!!'... at the very least until the various contingency plans have been given a chance. If everything falls through, then sure, go wild screaming boycott. But, until then, hold off.

Edit: 'player' not 'power'!

Jack-bashing is sooooo 2009.

I'm not really boycotting NCSoft per se. They just don't have any other games in their stable I really want to play.

Without proof, there's no point to being mean and vindictive.

WITH proof... heck yeah. Go for it.

Me too, man. Me too. That's why I prefaced what I said with the comment about not meaning it as snarky as it sounded. We're all being put through the wringer on this and it's definitely showing in some posts, some more than others.

But hang in there, I promise that all hope isn't lost. I know some folks undoubtedly think I'm being too optimistic, but I really think something can be worked out somehow. I don't know what yet, but City of Heroes is just too good a game, this is too strong a community, for it to be irrevocably over. I honestly believe that with all of my heart and I promise I'll do my best to make it true.

Unlike Tony, I have basically zero faith in this, but I'm really good at working through my tears.

Whichever half of the glass you look at, having something to do to try and make a difference is infinitely better than having nothing to do to try and make a difference.

You guys go for the boycotts.

Me, I'm going to wander to the other side of camp and look for the girl cots. And see if there are any girls in them.

Thanks for chiming in, Zwill.

Meh, NCSoft gets the honor of being the second ever game company on my personal boycott list. (The first being Obsidian Entertainment for ruining great franchises by making half completed, unfinishable, bug infested games that, saddest part of all, had the potential to be great. Burn me twice, but certainly not 3 times.)

I'm burnt on MMO's too for the foreseeable future. All that time, money and, lets not forget, emotional investment just isn't worth it if you can't rely on it being there when you want it to.

This has already been debunked by a red name as a lie. NCSoft will have to try for better propaganda.

My sig says it all. I will not let this die. Facebook and Twitter, my friends, let's unleash the power of social media.

I'm not going to boycott anyone, but to be perfectly honest, I've never tried any other game published by NCSoft and liked 'em to begin with, so, meh.
