I think those are both the first and foremost ones that spring to my mind.
They never said permanently, it might just change sumin else. Or have him step out the lime light.
Better yet, Statesman will die, Marcus Cole will live out the rest of his days?

I already kicked States' butt and Recluse's. Neither one wants to piss me off, so they'll keep sitting pretty offering their task forces if they know what's good for them.

Given the backstory of Statesmen the Dev... I'd say this day has been a long time coming... I know when I first saw the whole "who will die" storyline advertised, my first thought was, "I wonder if they're going to finally kill Statesmen off."
To make him actually gone, there really is a lot of work to do in various story arcs throughout the game if they choose to go that route.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
Interesting, but I'd like to know why you guys did this, Zwill.
Going by guesses for Issue 22 going live early next year, I wonder if an I22.5 might be a kind of follow up to the SSA?

Going to guess that the death of Statesman is the stripping/sacrifice of his powers, and we'll end up running the Marcus Cole task force soon... After all, States died once already and Numina fixed him, and Positron was killed by the Honoree, and he got better. Even better than he was in the first place, actually...

Here's the misdirection - Statesman, the persona, dies. Cole just changes his name and costume, probably to something like Freedom Man, and gets a little edgier.
Or he changes his name to Bastion. And then Citadel goes all @#$#@$#@$% @%$#%@# and terrorizes Talos with his fuming rampage.

Since State's is going to kick the bucket, does that mean we all "become" Statesman/woman and fill his shoes?
