There's a difference between reserving a name (especially if it's one you're already known by) for future use and taking up a name that someone else is known by for purposes of either holding it hostage or griefing. Most of the toons in that screenshot were likely the former rather than the latter.

Uh. I hope. My opinion of human nature has taken a lot of hits in the past few years so I freely admit that I could be wrong.

This thread is hysterical.

If you really want the name that bad, just email the person who has it and *kindly* ask them if they'd be willing to give it up/back. I don't think there's any real harm in that. Just be careful not to harrass them if they keep your name.

One will never know. Though my instinct tells me otherwise.

This.

I'll freely admit to hurrying to grab specific names. All of them have concepts I want to play, some are waiting on future power sets (I'm such a melee person), or just the right costume piece to make things gel.

And of course, if someone was really set on having a name that I currently have reserved for a future character, I'm willing to consider releasing it.

Then again, to my knowledge, I don't think I grabbed any name that was high profile. At least, not intentionally.

In general, you can't copyright names. You can trademark them, but only when used within the scope of an actual business doing actual commerce. For example I could trademark "Arcanaville" if I did some sort of business under that name, but I don't.

Even if I did trademark the name, by using it on one of NCSoft's services I was required to extend to them a non-exclusive worldwide perpetual license to use that mark within any context, which in effect allows NCSoft to grant the use of that name to any player of City of Heroes. Its not really the other player that has the right to use "Arcanaville" its NCSoft that has the right to grant that name to anyone in the game, whether I had any actual legal rights to it or not (and I don't).

This. The OP might try simply asking nicely.

Although, considering how vociferous the OP has been in the past on the issue of unique naming in this game, the irony here is palpable.

No matter how creative you are or how many thesauruses you open, sometimes that one perfect name is simply taken. Probably by another Orson Scott Card fan.

So did you do it to prove a point? Or just to make him grovel a little?

I had to take the two characters I had come online to make as generic placeholders myself when Exalted came online because of how bad the server was acting. By the time I had created the first of them, when I went to enter the game it told me my connection had been lost and to try again later.

After several attempts, I had to back out, which put me to sign on and eventually I had to exit and restart the game. After that, I came back, snagged the two names on generic characters, and made the actual characters the next day after the server downtime was over.

I doubt I was the only one. Oddly enough, the couple dozen generic placeholders I saw during this time all had people names, not super-hero names.

Are you actually hinting that you targeted posters deliberately based on their position on naming? Because I do remember you. Since you stated your plan to drop down to premium, there would be no point in making characters on Exalted as they would be inaccessible to a Premium player, if those characters were being made to actually be played.

He's dropping down to Premium? Wow, that kinda adds another dimension to this, doesn't it? :/

That wasn't you? I saw 'Arcanaville' quitting just as Fire in the Sky had made it to Atlas Park and thought 'I didn't know Arcana was into cats'.

To be safe, I just snagged Exalted Flamethrower Ferret. My ferret. MINE.

Sonic/Sonic, Science/Magic/Tech origin (These are the easiest to explain the powers, Mutant can work but doesn't feel right, Natural would be harder.) A musician/composer (famous or struggling, whichever works better for you) decides to use his knowledge of acoustics and the psychology of music to fight for good/get rich/gain fame, etc.. Seriously, Lyrik is rich with possibilities in terms of concepts and back story. And you can combine either Sonic set with other powersets to fit the mood of the character you want.

Fire - He can generate so much energy from the sound waves that it ignites materials.
Ice - He uses his control of vibrations to suck energy out of the target. (Super hero physics, anything can work. )
Dark - Part of the sounds are ultra-low frequencies, reaching into the dark dimensions and afflicting the targets.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that griefing is an actionable offense.

It could easily be proven that the person(s) that did this were targeting specific "well known" and "high profile" names. If their accounts are full of such names, that is proof of griefing, and it should be addressed by the GMs/Devs.

.
I wouldn't say, bragging about getting a known forum posters name, as griefing.

And if you didn't see this coming, you didn't know the CoH comminity that well.

I'm going to assume he didn't camp Friggin' Taser because I got to it first or he's some kind of misguided fan of my style of posting.

Edit: Or he fails at life and camped Friggin' Tazer.

I'm not hinting at anything. But the VIP/premium statuses appears to be designed for people to switch in and out of. I would not presume that people would not want to plan for future status changes and have names reserved on Exalted for future use. In fact, I would think a significant number of people are doing that. Your logic appears faulty, here.

Also, people sometimes simply change their mind. Witness the OP: one day he is quitting over the EULA, the next day, not so much. I think several people were wondering why the OP was complaining at all, since he had so prominently announced his intentions.

Carnifax got nabbed too. I blame NCSoft & Paragon Studios mostly for finally getting i21 working long after my bedtime.

It'd be nice to have back but I'm not losing any sleep over it. I hope the person who took it is using it though, I might PM them later and ask if they'd considering releasing it for me.

I tried getting on the VIP server ASAP after they finally got it up and running. I managed to reserve 1 of 2 names that I wanted, unfortunately "Hercules" appeared to be one of the first poached. Either that, or they've added it to their list of reserved names. Would have been nice if they had also honored the Beta agreement on this new server, to keep just one name.

Pop onto the server and /getglobalname <character>.

Posting the info on the forums will get modded, but they can't prevent you from finding out.

And yeah, got my global namesake reserved there, even though I'm unlikely to play there much. If the place ends up being populated by the kinds of petty d-bags that would do this to be spiteful (as opposed to those who did it to be genuinely helpful), why would I want to play there?

'Sides, I actually WANT to help teach "Freems" how to play. I want to be there for someone's first GM fight, or Rikti Invasion, or Ship Raid, or task force. Never hurts me to relive my own sense of wonder through someone else's eyes.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

I should point out for the protocol that having a name on the forums or a global name in-game does not entitle you to having that name available to you for your characters on every server you try to log onto. Other people making characters named after you is also not a violation of any rule I'm aware of. The only names any of us have any claim on are names we already hold.

No-one but me can be "Samuel_Tow" here on the forums, though I suppose is someone really hated himself, he could be "Samuel Tow." I have a Samuel Tow on Victory that no-one's ever going to take from me since I don't plan to delete the character ever, but if someone wants it on another server and gets it before me, I really have no say in the matter.
