Who's the Jerk...
There are a lot of things in this game that are "legal" or "within game limits" but are still considered griefing; kiting GMs into PI square leaps to mind.
Just because something can be done, doesn't mean it should be done.

Impersonation isn't the problem. Getting the names you want is.

There are a lot of slow of wits out there.
"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill
We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
That is... insane!!
I guess you two deleted your reserved ones before the friend made theirs? Or do you all three have the name? I would have loved to conduct a bunch of experiments with that situation! Tried sending you tells, making more of the same name, etc. |
First thing that came to mind was that there was some new sensitivity to capitalization - so I tried making the name in all caps, or with a different letter capitalized - no go.
One thing that was interesting - I don't normally see the name - or a speech bubble - when sending private tells. But it was doing it with this. (So the tell would show up above my head, saying Name: Message.)
But, yeah, they're deleted, and the person that wanted it held has it now.
Good luck finding me to blame me: I am also Nowhere on Exalted.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Apologies to anybody who wanted a character named "The Facepuncher," but I'm camping it until Street Justice comes out.
Yes, I intend to play the character.

Also, who's the jerk who didn't try to steal the name Chad Gulzow-Man? I'm a little insulted.

Also, one name I thought to try for but was taken was OFFLINE. Long ago, I made a character called OFFLINE all caps on a server I normally didn't play on. In the days before global hide I would sometimes want to chat with a few people but not show up on global lists. So I decided to make a character called OFFLINE so that in all global lists while I was logged into that character I would show up as OFFLINE.
I thought it was clever at the time.

I went on VIP server and took the name "Foo" and I'm purposefully withholding it until I receive money or sexual favours from him to get it back.
Yes it is.

Because everyone knows how to do that right away. Or is even aware how similar, say, I and l look.

Yeah I know, lots of people. But it's damned depressing to just accept that.
(edit: and even more depressing if it's in a game that actually does allow more than one person to have the same name)

Im a little bummed I didnt get Heartbreaker, but then Iv ebeen Heart Breaker on Champion for 7 years now, so I'll live with it. What I found funny was, I was emailing my roomie who was at work, and reseved a bunch of names for him- I think I got 7 or 8 out of 9 or 10 names I tried for him- while my luck on my own account was more 50-50.
All that can be said for sure is that some people were faster on the naming draw than others. being certain about malicious intent is pretty much impossible barring a /tell from someone saying "neener neener, got your name".

Just my opinion, but if I had an oddball name like Grim Grey Snorkler and it was already taken, I'd assume it was deliberate. If you were trying for a name like 'Midnight' (which a friend of mine actually has on one server), you're out of luck.

Texas Justice wasn't Stolen/NameCamped/TakenToActuallyBePlayed either.
EDIT: This makes me feel that I'm more unimportant than what I already believed.

If a dozen people all file petitions against someone for having names they want, the only person potentially being harassed is the person with the names.

Everyone else has to decide that one for themselves, though.

Excuse me while I continue to add my own levity to the mix...
This actually gives me an idea... I think I am going to make some other people's characters on another server and role-play those characters (not as THE PLAYER, but just the character). It's like getting to play as Wolverine or SpongeBob Squarepants, but without any trademark issues!
Hmm... who to choose...

This whole thread stands as a list of excellent reasons we should have non-unique naming.
