Westley can be Philotic Knight on the VIP server when he resubs and I'll leave it at that. I'm not the one holding it for him in case people were wondering.
|
Like, Johnny is doing him a favor and he just neglected to mention that to Westley?
When did people appoint themselves the guardians of other people's names? I ask because of the example of another poster upstream who said that he addressed a person with his name who said "Yeah, I was holding that for you, here you go".
Is Arcanaville's name being "held for her"? Seems like an eyebrow-raising activity to me.

I don't think this is a case of being "popular". This is more of as case of accruing a large post count largely of snarky posts.

Am I the only person looking at this thread and thinking that Exalted is pretty much going to be a cesspool?
Weirdly enough, I was able to get both TonyV and Tony V locked. Not that I think it's such a nifty keen name, it's actually one that I honestly think is generic enough that it shouldn't be "reservable." But since I'm an administrator of several popular CoH-related web sites, I don't want people impersonating me. If some other TonyV is running around out there doing missions and whatever, more power to them. If they're trying to get users' information on the Titan Network, that's a problem, and I'll pull out whatever stops I can to get them smacked down.
Name-squatting non-generic names is griefing, plain and simple. I certainly hope that the moderation department come down hard and fast on people taking names of well-known people. And yes, it most certainly is possible to draw that line, they do it all the time for infringing names or costumes.
Until/unless they do, not to put too fine a point on it, I'll be avoiding Exalted. For all the talk how awesome the CoH user base is, these types of incidents remind us how scummy some among our ranks are, not a good sign as CoH:Freedom is launching. I think it's altogether telling that as people have been wary about the potential negative impact that "freepers" will have on the game, this is going on on the so-called "VIP" server during the head start, when there aren't even any "freeper" accounts on yet.
So although I hope that the GMs will come down hard on this practice, I think it's really pathetic that it's even an issue.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
In zero seriousness, I actually tried to pull the same jerky maneuver and reserve some of the character names of all of you forum-goers.
Only, I chose some of those alts that you created as a test on a different server.
I filled up my 12 slots on Exalted with one of each of your test characters from an alternate server... And none of you have even noticed!!
Back to the drawing board for me!!
Next time, I will weave all of your lost socks into puppets and perform a show in the dark within my attic! Muhahahahaha!!!

You know. This whole thing wouldn't be an issue if CoH adapted the naming scheme of its cousin MMOG. Just saying.
@Celestial Lord and @Celestial Lord Too
Let me get this straight, you are mad about not getting a name in a game you are quitting anyway? My sympathy for you knows no bounds.
P.S. If somebody wants to ego stroke themselves by taking my namesake on a server I have zero desire to play on, then by all means do so. You won't even get a day old internet cookie from me for your effort. |
It's not a punishable offense, but it shows how silly folks are if they think they can get in game (or out of game--which unless I'm mistaken WOULD be bannable) currency from the actual players with those names on other servers.
Blazara Aura LVL 50 Fire/Psi Dom (with 125% recharge)
Flameboxer Aura LVL 50 SS/Fire Brute
Ice 'Em Aura LVL 50 Ice Tank
Darq Widow Fortune LVL 50 Fortunata (200% rech/Night Widow 192.5% rech)--thanks issue 19!
Not that I think I'm all that big name of a guy, but this thread does make me glad that I went ahead and built a new alt with my main name on day one.
Ok, so... to recap:
Westley's not Philotic Knight on the VIP server. But somebody IS Philotic Knight. And somebody IS Arcanaville But Arcanaville is not that somebody. Who is somebody? That name's taken too, but I guess I could still be "somebody special" on the VIP server. It also looks like somebody's nobody, but I could be "nobody special". That may be more accurate. After all this squatting, is anything still available? Has anybody tried to be everybody? Anyone? |

I'm happy. Got my global back I lost 6 years ago. It's been in use on all the other servers ever since. I guess everyone want to be me.
|
Out of curiosity I checked alternate spelling of my global and found three of them have been snagged by other players already. So I quickly camped the other spellings I could think of before I lose them in case I want to make other variations of my namesake.
Heh. I grabbed two names for someone else... because they asked. No assumption.
The amusing thing is, so did another friend of mine (with one of them.) We got the *same* name. Same spelling. No extra spaces or anything odd.
Support was confused. But they said both names pointed to my account. I think the screenshot just confused them more.
Curious to see if I hear back on this - in any case, the person that asked it to be held has it. (And I held hers before even trying for any of mine... surprisingly, no issues. Must not have irritated enough people... yet. Either that or someone did it and added the underscore, which I'd just laugh at.)

I guess you two deleted your reserved ones before the friend made theirs? Or do you all three have the name?
I would have loved to conduct a bunch of experiments with that situation!
Tried sending you tells, making more of the same name, etc.
